Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contamination problems have become a major factor in determining the manufacturability, quality, and reliability of electronic assemblies. Understanding the mechanics and chemistry of contamination has become necessary for improving quality and reliability and reducing costs of electronic assemblies. Designed as a practical guide, Contamination of Electronic Assemblies presents a generalized overview of contamination problems and serves as a problem-solving reference point. It takes a step-by-step approach to identifying contaminants and their effects on electronic products at each level of manufacture. The text is divided into four sections: Laminate Manufacturing, Substrate Fabrication, Printed Wiring Board Assembly, and Conformal Coatings. These sections discuss all aspects of contamination of electronic assemblies, from the manufacture of glass fibers used in the laminates to the complete assembly of the finished product. The authors present detection and control methods that can help you reduce defects during the manufacturing process. With tables, figures, and fishbone diagrams serving as a quick reference, Contamination of Electronic Assemblies will help you familiarize yourself with the origination, detection, measurement, control, and prevention of contamination in electronic assemblies.

Book excerpt: This final report covers the research and development work done on conformal coatins and is divided into five phases: Phase A - Evaluation of commercially available conformal coatings such as: epoxies, polyurethanes, silicons, acrylics and polystyrene materials, and their ability to meet the requirements specified in PR+C 61-SIMSA482 in order to obtain data for the preparation of a three services coordinated military specification. In this phase is also discussed the effect of coating thickness on insulation resistance and Q factor at 1, 50 and 100 mc under prolonged high humidity conditions. Phase B Investigation of methods for removing the conformal coating to permit replacement of parts when necessary without impairing the functional operations of the unit. Phase C - Evaluation, for upgrading purposes, of the allowable minimum spacing between conductors on uncoated and coated boards. Phase D - Study the effect of conformal coating on copper, gold and solderplated conductors with respect to their effect on Q factor and capacity at 1, 50 and 100 mc. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book in the Materials and Processes for Electronics Applications series answers questions vital to the successful design and manufacturing of electronic components, modules, and systems such as: - How can one protect electronic assemblies from prolonged high humidity, high temperatures, salt spray or other terrestrial and space environments? - What coating types can be used to protect microelectronics in military, space, automotive, or medical environments? - How can the chemistry of polymers be correlated to desirable physical and electrical properties? - How can a design engineer avoid subsequent potential failures due to corrosion, metal migration, electrical degradation, outgassing? - What are the best processes that manufacturing can use to mask, clean, prepare the surface, dispense the coating, and cure the coating? - What quality assurance and in-process tests can be used to assure reliability? - What government or industry specifications are available? - How can organic coatings be selected to meet OSHA, EPA, and other regulations? Besides a discussion of the traditional roles of coatings for moisture and environmental protection of printed circuit assemblies, this book covers dielectric coatings that provide electrical functions such as the low-dielectric-constant dielectrics used to fabricate multilayer interconnect substrates and high-frequency, high-speed circuits. Materials engineers and chemists will benefit greatly from a chapter on the chemistry and properties of the main types of polymer coatings including: Epoxies, Polyimides, Silicones, Polyurethanes, Parylene, Benzocyclobenzene and many others. For manufacturing personnel, there is an entire chapter of over a dozen processes for masking, cleaning, and surface preparation and a comprehensive review of over 20 processes for the application and curing of coatings including recent extrusion, meniscus, and curtain coating methods used in processing large panels. The pros and cons of each method are given to aid the engineer in selecting the optimum method for his/her application. As a bonus, from his own experience, the author discusses some caveats that will help reduce costs and avoid failures. Finally, the author discusses regulations of OSHA, EPA, and other government agencies which have resulted in formulation changes to meet VOC and toxicity requirements. Tables of numerous military, commercial, industry, and NASA specifications are given to help the engineer select the proper callout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation of numerous components that are critical to safety in industries around the world relies on protective coatings. These coatings often allow process equipment to serve a purpose in environments well beyond the operational limit of the uncoated components. Durability, ease of application, repairability, reliability and long-term performance of such coatings are all key to their application. Therefore, this book, Coatings for Harsh Environments, is devoted to research and review articles on the metallic, non-metallic and composite coatings used in aggressive environments. In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to: coatings for high temperature and molten salt applications; thermal spray and cold spray coatings for aggressive environments; corrosion, wear and cavitation resistant coatings; coatings for mitigating marine corrosion; coatings for chemical and petrochemical plants; thermal barrier coatings.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conductive anodic filament (CAF) formation is a failure mode in printed wiring boards (PWB) which occurs when the circuit is operated under a high voltage gradient. Humidity also plays a factor since the boards must be stored, or operated in a humid environment. This failure mode is enhanced by certain water soluble fluxes or hot air solder leveling (HASL) fluids. The objective of this research was to examine the effect of three different conformal coatings in reducing the incidence of CAF associated with a variety of water-soluble flux formulations. To achieve this, a series of fluxes were evaluated for their propensity to enhance CAF. Several of these were chosen for further examination with acrylic, silicone and parylene C conformal coatings. Of the three conformal coatings tested only parylene C was effective in preventing CAF and dendrite formation in all cases. Silicone coatings showed bubbles present on some of the samples aged at 85 deg C for the 28-day test. Localized debonding occurred on some of the acrylic and the parylene C boards. Also, some boards exhibited localized debonding of epoxy/glass after during aging of the coating, suggested chemical interactions with flux residues creating mechanical stresses. One set of boards was subjected to higher processing temperatures similar to those that would be associated with lead-free soldering. When compared to boards processed with the same fluxes using the lower processing temperatures, the high temperature boards showed significant increase in CAF formation.
