Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the École Polytechnique shootings of 1989 to the political controversy surrounding the elimination of the federal long-gun registry, the issue of gun control has been a subject of fierce debate in Canada. But in fact, firearm regulation has been a sharply contested issue in the country since Confederation. Arming and Disarming offers the first comprehensive history of gun control in Canada from the colonial period to the present. In this sweeping, immersive book, R. Blake Brown outlines efforts to regulate the use of guns by young people, punish the misuse of arms, impose licensing regimes, and create firearm registries. Brown also challenges many popular assumptions about Canadian history, suggesting that gun ownership was far from universal during much of the colonial period, and that many nineteenth century lawyers – including John A. Macdonald – believed in a limited right to bear arms. Arming and Disarming provides a careful exploration of how social, economic, cultural, legal, and constitutional concerns shaped gun legislation and its implementation, as well as how these factors defined Canada’s historical and contemporary ‘gun culture.’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GUN CONTROL: INTERNATIONAL VIEWS, PERSPECTIVES AND COMPARISONS extensively explores gun control policies, firearm ownership landscapes, and associated issues across various countries. It begins with an introductory chapter outlining its scope and purpose. Subsequent chapters delve into topics such as gun control policies encompassing crime prevention, public safety, mass shooting reduction, mental health considerations, domestic violence prevention, accidental shooting prevention, national security, illegal firearm trafficking, and maintenance of public order. The book also addresses the definition of guns, civilian firearm use, responsible gun ownership, and the United States' intricate gun ownership landscape, covering laws, regulations, statistics, and the impact of policies on violent crime and mass shootings. Further chapters extend this analysis to other nations, exploring gun control scenarios in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, and Russia. Additionally, the book discusses global perspectives on gun ownership variations, the purchase process, and introduces a rating system for effective gun control policies. The final chapter explores the sociological aspects of sports shooting, covering historical development, cultural influences, community dynamics, inclusivity, economic factors, political aspects, controversies, and the intersection of health and well-being. The inclusion of an index and reference section enhances the book's accessibility and credibility, ultimately presenting a comprehensive examination of diverse aspects within the realm of gun-related subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firearms policy has periodically dominated Canadian politics since the late 1960s. Compared to the United States, however, there is little scholarship on firearms policy to the neighbouring north. Using Canadian firearms policy, Aiming to Explain examines five prominent policy process theories employed during the period from the 1989 Montreal Massacre to the 2012 cancellation of the universal firearms registry. Throughout, B. Timothy Heinmiller and Matthew A. Hennigar present rigorous applications of rational choice institutionalism, social constructivism, the advocacy coalition framework, the multiple streams framework, and punctuated equilibrium. The investigations draw on method-based best practices, while also making use of a wide range of data collection and analysis techniques, including inferential statistics, descriptive statistics, process tracing, congruence analysis, and qualitative content analysis. The goal of Aiming to Explain is not to select a single best theory, but to compare their relative strengths and weaknesses in an effort to direct future research and theoretical development efforts in the study of Canadian public policy.

Book Synopsis Gun Violence and Gun Control: Critical Engagements by : Annette Bailey
Download or read book Gun Violence and Gun Control: Critical Engagements written by Annette Bailey and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary anthology explores a wide range of intersecting issues contributing to and arising from gun violence. Millions of people are hurt and killed by gun violence globally, and the traumatic realities of these events are navigated by individuals and communities widely. In this context, gun violence fundamentally threatens social functioning in significant ways, and profoundly test the resilience of families. The resulting transformations carry social, political, legal and economic implications for mothering, family dynamics, and community engagement. This collaborative volume brings together diverse perspectives intended to deconstruct perceptions, realities, risks and impacts of gun violence, as seen by researchers, educators, community advocates, public health/health care experts, criminologists, social workers, field-based practitioners, and victims/survivors of gun violence. The distinct and broad range of contributions in this volume critically unpacks representations, stress and trauma, resilience, advocacy/activism, policymaking, family functioning, social justice and equity, governmentality and the criminal justice system, public health/health care, and community programs/interventions. Ultimately, the work is a unique contribution to the literature in which there is a lack of wide academic consideration of gun violence and a demonstrably unsatisfactory political response stretching back decades.
