Book excerpt: It has been recognized that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) may be one of the principal pathways for delivering nutrients to surface water bodies, resulting in eutrophication of many nearshore coastal areas throughout the world. A one-year study of the coastal aquifer system (A1, A2, A3-Aquifers) of Gulf Shores, Alabama was conducted to assess SGD fluxes, characterize contaminant and nutrient transport through the aquifer system, and determine the availability of future aquifer resources. A three-dimensional density-dependent groundwater flow and transport model (SEAWAT), based on the coupling of MOFLOW and MT3DMS, was used to simulate the transport of nitrate and sulfate through the groundwater system to the coast. The model was refined and calibrated using independently determined field-based radon (222Rn, t1/2=3.82 d) isotopic tracer time-series surveys across a portion of the model area to enhance estimates of nearshore SGD. Two SGD approaches, integrated with 222Rn-determined seepage rates, were developed to determine (1) localized; and (2) entire-shoreline SGD. Thirty-two groundwater wells within the study area were sampled to constrain the groundwater 222Rn end-member in the model and characterize the extent of nutrient contamination. The ArcGIS database was used to spatially plot and interpret nutrient and 222Rn data, and generate iso-concentration maps detailing groundwater contamination and aquifer piezometric surfaces across the study area. Radon concentrations measured in groundwater from the shallow A1 and deeper A2 Aquifers were statistically identical, an indication that there is direct connection between the two systems. Elevated nitrate and sulfate concentration (up to 30 mg/L and 724 mg/L, respectively) were observed through active monitoring with zones of principal discharge identified in the lower A2 Aquifer. A groundwater seepage rate of 18.3 cm/day, calculated through the radon mass-balance model at a model area lake, was used to calibrate the numerical model surficial aquifer zone. Final shoreline seepage fluxes of 6.41 and 8.62 cm/day were determined from the results of both the multi-cell and shoreface numerical model simulation SGD approaches, respectively. The results of the two numerical SGD methods demonstrate good agreement with the 222Rn-derived methods, and provided an effective approximation technique that can be inexpensively duplicated in other similar shoreline areas.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) represents a significant portion of the total discharge from coastal aquifers through diffuse seepage and point source springs, but can be difficult to locate. SGD is important as it can be a source of nutrients to estuaries and other coastal ecosystems. In an effort to evaluate geophysical and thermal methods for detecting SGD on the Florida Gulf coast, a suite of water-borne surveys were run in conjunction with aerial thermal imagery over the lower Suwannee River and estuary in March and September 2005. Thermal imagery exploits temperature differences between discharging groundwater and surface water. Thermal images were collected in March (dry season), at the end of winter, and at night to maximize the differences between warm groundwater and colder surface water. Generally pore waters in zones of concentrated SGD should be fresher, and hence more resistive than "background" values. Marine streaming resistivity data can detect pore water resistivity variations and were collected alongside continuous 222Rn and CH4 sampling from surface waters. Naturally occurring tracers, 222Rn and CH4, are used as the "standard" against which resistivity and thermal images are compared. Based on the expected properties of discharging groundwater, we hypothesize that in zones of elected tracer concentrations, increased thermal image temperatures and increased terrain resistivities will be observed. The data set as a whole supports this hypothesis. However, regional-scale correlations are clearly and significantly influenced by factors other than SGD including thermal-image noise, the presence of the fresh/salt water interface, and a large regional tracer gradient generated by a first-order spring. At local scales (tens to hundreds of meters) there are no significant correlations between thermal image temperature and tracer concentrations, due at least in part to flight-line edge effects that dominate the thermal imagery. After correcting for regional trends, significant correlations between tracer concentration and log resistivity exist only in a subset of the data that lies offshore. Because neither thermal imagery nor streaming resistivity data consistently support the hypotheses, this study suggests that neither method by itself is reliable for detecting SGD in this area.

Book excerpt: The book addresses the development of the basic knowledge of the subsurface solute transfer with a particular emphasis on field data collection and analysis coupled with modeling (analytical and numerical) tool application. The relevant theoretical developments are concerned mainly with the formulation and solution of deterministic mass-transport equations for a wide range of engineering issues in groundwater quality assessment and forecasting. The book gives many computational examples and case studies drawn from the conducted field investigations. The analyzed problems are as follows: investigation and prediction of groundwater contamination by industrial contaminants and solutions (radionuclides, chloride and nitrate brine) with special focus on the effect of (a) aquifer heterogeneity, anisotropy, and dual porosity, (b) density contrast existing between industrial waste and groundwater, or in density-stratified artesian and coastal groundwater systems; (c) physicochemical interactions that play a major role in retarding (e.g. adsorption) or enhancing (e.g. interactions between dissolved species and mobile colloids) contaminant transport; prediction of the effects of pumping on groundwater quality at wellfields; groundwater dating using stable and radioactive isotopes for prediction and assessment of contamination potential; field and laboratory tests’ design and analysis, and monitoring data interpretation; partitioning of surface and subsurface flows using isotope techniques. One of the most essential topics addressed in the book is the migration and fate of radionuclides. Model development is motivated by field data analysis from a number of radioactively contaminated sites in the Russian Federation: near-surface radioactive waste disposal sites and deep-well radioactive waste injection sites. They play a unique role in the advancement of knowledge of the subsurface behavior and fate of many hazardous radionuclides and can be considered as field-scale laboratories. Thus, the book, along with theoretical findings, contains field information, which will facilitate the understanding of subsurface solute transport and the development of a methodology for practical applications to groundwater hydrology.

Computer graphics are used to help visualise the data, and output to plotters is also catered for. Simple confined aquifers, leaky confined aquifers, unconfined aquifers and a variety of boundary conditions are dealt with. The book and the microcomputer programs it describes will allow the reader to apply very flexible computer techniques to the analysis of his well and aquifer discharge test data. The speed of the microcomputer analyses will give the user the opportunity of looking at his data in more ways than he would otherwise be able to, thus giving insights into the data that would not otherwise be possible. The simulation programs permit the production of type curve data, which can then be used in comparison with the real data, or used in becoming familiar with the operation of the analysis programs.Although primarily intended for practicing hydrogeologists and universities teaching hydrogeology, this book would also be of interest to anyone having an interest in the effects of groundwater extraction. The programs will run on IBM PCs and compatibles with colour graphics.

Book excerpt: The book provides a review of experimental methods and presents the worldwide newest literature regarding chemical substances fluxes via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Thus, the book characterizes both the distribution of chemicals in groundwater impacted areas in the Baltic Sea and their fluxes via SGD to the Baltic Sea. This book presents the state of art regarding the SGD and detailed studies on SGD characterization in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is an example of a region highly influenced by a variety of human activities that affect the ecosystem. It is shown that SGD has been proven to be one of the important sources introducing dissolved substances into the Baltic Sea. The loads of chemical substances delivered to the Baltic sea with SGD have not been quantified so far.

Book excerpt: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a demonstrated source of fresh water, nutrients, contaminants, and other materials to nearshore environments. The terrestrially derived fresh groundwater component of submarine groundwater discharge (FSGD) is of particular interest in monitoring contaminant pathways to coastal regions. Because the chemical loads of FSGD can have ecological and economic impacts on nearshore environments, it is important to have generally applicable methods to quantify FSGD along the global coastline. In this research, I pursued multivariable regression modeling as a novel method to model FSGD along any point of the global coastline. Modeling was conducted using literature-compiled FSGD flux estimates for sites around the globe and a suite of hydrogeological and precipitation data sets available on the global scale. Additionally, I used an approximation of Darcy0́9s law, where the topographic slope is used as a proxy of hydraulic gradient, as an additional method to predict FSGD fluxes. The approximation of Darcy0́9s law method used global scale saturated hydraulic conductivity and global topographic slope data. This research was guided by the following questions: (1) Can multivariable regression predict FSGD fluxes when utilizing some combination of permeability, porosity, topographic slope, saturated hydraulic conductivity, precipitation, and soil moisture? and (2) What is the level of intercomparability between FSGD estimates from different SGD publications? To address these questions, I reviewed over 500 SGD-related publications to obtain FSGD flux estimates for 44 field study sites. These FSGD flux estimates were used in regression with the aforementioned hydrogeological and precipitation data. They were also used to assess the approximation results of Darcy0́9s law. The results of these methods indicated that the multivariable regression modeling based on field estimates of FSGD is likely not feasible with the current state of the data due to a lack of standardization in the field methods used to estimate FSGD flux. I suggest that research groups that study FSGD establish a higher level of standardization in study methods to increase the comparability between FSGD flux estimates. This would facilitate modeling efforts that rely on FSGD flux estimates from multiple field sites.

It presents supporting material for academic courses worldwide that include this and similar topics. It is an excellent sourcebook for students and other attendees of the International Karst School: Characterization and Engineering of Karst Aquifers, which opened in Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2014 and which will be organized every year in early summer. As opposed to more theoretical works, this is a catalog of possible engineering interventions in karst and their implications. Although the majority of readers will be professionals with geology/hydrogeology backgrounds, the language is not purely technical making it accessible to a wider audience. This means that the methodology, case studies and experiences presented will also benefit water managers working in karst environments.

Book excerpt: Submarine groundwater discharge to oceans is an ever-increasing topic of study in the earth sciences due to the dynamic geochemical and biological effects it imposes on aquatic systems both by the chemical reactions it induces and the constituents it transports. Studies indicate groundwater discharge can represent a major source of nutrients, fecal indicator bacteria, caffeine, trace metals, and mercury to aquatic systems. In some systems, groundwater discharge can rival rivers and upwelling, as a source of nutrients. The implications of groundwater discharge include harmful algal blooms caused by nutrient loading and poor water quality caused by pollutants transported through groundwater discharge. Much research has been directed at quantifying the flux of groundwater and associated constituents through groundwater discharge using radium isotopes as geochemical tracers. Radium isotopes represent some of the most common geochemical proxies used to calculate groundwater discharge rates to lakes, oceans, and other water bodies. However well-established these tracers are in the scientific community, they are often used as a single proxy for groundwater discharge resulting in large errors due to natural variability and dependence on residence time, and these errors compound through the calculations. Large errors in the estimates of the volume flux of groundwater discharge lead to large errors in constituent fluxes through groundwater discharge, which diminishes the usefulness of such efforts. Additionally most SGD-focused studies stop at calculating the SGD and associated constituent fluxes, and pondering the impacts of the constituents on the marine ecosystem, with out directly measuring the impact on the system through other methods. The focus of my thesis is to integrate methods of calculating SGD fluxes based on multi-radium isotope measurements with mixing models, bioassay incubation experiments, and water isotopes to better understand the impacts of SGD on marine systems. First (Chapter 1) I will integrate a multi-radium isotope method to calculate SGD fluxes with water isotopes to better understand the hydrology of the systems to understand the governing processes and importance of SGD as a conduit of methane to the North Pacific and Artic Oceans. Then (Chapter 2) I will combine a single radium isotope SGD flux model with a bioassay incubation experiment to determine the ability of SGD to impact phytoplankton ecology in Monterey Bay, California. Last (Chapter 3) I will combine a multi-radium isotope and nutrient flux mixing model with a multi-radium isotope SGD flux model to determine the importance of SGD as a nutrient source compared to sub-thermocline water and river water in Monterey Bay, California.
