Book excerpt: Soil degradation is a term used to describe the loss of productivity caused by soil disturbance resulting from forestry practices employed during tree harvest, site preparation, or stand tending. This report is phase 1 of 3, identifying the causes, nature and extent of soil degradation on forest land in British Columbia and providing an estimate of the potential loss of productivity. Data and information were gathered by a literature review, a questionnaire sent to industry and government personnel, interviews and discussions with individuals involved in research, and summary data from the Ministry of Forestry and Lands. Data covers 1976-1985/6.

Book Synopsis Regenerating British Columbia's Forests by : R. Parish
Download or read book Regenerating British Columbia's Forests written by R. Parish and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerating British Columbia's Forests will assist those responsible for planning reforestation projects to reach informed decisions and will challenge them to consider primarily the biological factors basic to reforestation success rather than short-term costs and production technology. Although its main audience is practising foresters and forestry students of British Columbia, the text will be of considerable interest to foresters in other parts of Canada, the United States, and Europe who manage reforestation.
Download or read book Forest Soils written by Khan Towhid Osman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest soil characteristics are not only unique but their interpretation also differs from cropland soils. Just as there are diverse forest types, there are many soil variants that need different management. Today, forest plantations are being intensively managed for profitable timber, pulpwood and energy production. Site selection, species selection, site productivity evaluation, silvicultural treatments, and soil amendments need crucial soil information. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the physical, chemical and biological properties of forest soils and their implications on forest vegetation. Topics discussed include: major forest types of the world and their associated soils; forest biomass and nutrient dynamics; organic matter turnover and nutrient recycling; forest soil disturbance; forest soil and climate change; and forest soil management and silvicultural treatments.

Book Synopsis Forest Soil Rehabilitation in British Columbia by : Charles Ernest Bulmer
Download or read book Forest Soil Rehabilitation in British Columbia written by Charles Ernest Bulmer and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes issues and problems in forest soil rehabilitation in British Columbia, presenting an up-to-date review of the scientific literature and the activities of rehabilitation specialists and practitioners working for the forest industry and government. The focus is on techniques for restoring soil productivity, with the implied objective of re-establishing a productive forest ecosystem on a site that has suffered degradation. The first two sections of the report provide an overview of soil rehabilitation in the province and review the productivity of degraded and rehabilitated forest soils. This is followed by a section on soil physical process and nutrient cycling, describing how an understanding of growth-limiting conditions can guide practitioners to strategies for effective and cost-efficient rehabilitation. The next section reviews rehabilitation techniques, including tillage, topsoil conservation and replacement, reforestation and revegetation methods, and soil amelioration using fertilizers, amendments, and mulches. Finally, information gaps and research needs are identified.
