Book excerpt: Packed bed columns are largely employed for absorption, desorption, rectification and direct heat transfer processes in chemical and food industry, environmental protection and also processes in thermal power stations like water purification, flue gas heat utilization and SO2 removal. These Separation processes, are estimated to account for 40%-70% of capital and operating costs in process industry. Packed bed columns are widely employed in this area. Their usage also for direct heat transfer between gas and liquid, enlarge their importance. They are the best apparatuses, from thermodynamical point of view, for mass and heat transfer processes between gas and liquid phase. Their wide spreading is due to low capital investments and operating costs. Since 1995 there has not been published a specialised book in this area, and this is a period of quick development of packed columns. Packed Bed Columns reflects the state of this field including the author's experience on creating and investigating of new packings, column internals and industrial columns. - Considers the theories of mass transfer processes and shows how they help the construction of highly effective packings - Complete information about the performance characteristics of different modern types of highly effective packings - Considers the models for calculation and areas of their application

Book excerpt: This book introduces the fundamental principles of the mass transfer phenomenon and its diverse applications in process industry. It covers the full spectrum of techniques for chemical separations and extraction. Beginning with molecular diffusion in gases, liquids and solids within a single phase, the mechanism of inter-phase mass transfer is explained with the help of several theories. The separation operations are explained comprehensively in two distinct ways—stage-wise contact and continuous differential contact. The primary design requirements of gas–liquid equipment are discussed. The book provides a detailed discussion on all individual gas–liquid, liquid–liquid, solid–gas, and solid–liquid separation processes. The students are also exposed to the underlying principles of the membrane-based separation processes. The book is replete with real applications of separation processes and equipment. Problems are worked out in each chapter. Besides, problems with answers, short questions, multiple choice questions with answers are given at the end of each chapter. The text is intended for a course on mass transfer, transport and separation processes prescribed for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the specific needs of undergraduate chemical engineering students for the two courses in Mass Transfer I and Mass Transfer II. It is also suitable for a course in Downstream Processing for biotechnology students. This self-contained textbook is designed to provide single-volume coverage of the full spectrum of techniques for chemical separations. The operations covered include vapour distillation, fluid adsorption, gas absorption, liquid extraction, solid leaching, gas humidification, solid drying, foam separation, solution crystallization, metal alloying, reverse osmosis, molecular sieves, electrodialysis, and ion exchange. The text also discusses emerging applications such as drug delivery, gel electrophoresis, bleaching, membrane separations, polymer devolatilization, solution crystallization, and gas chromatography. Equipment selection is discussed for different operations. A table of industrial applications for each and every mass transfer unit operation is provided. The worked examples illustrate problems from chemical process and biotechnology industries. Review questions encourage critical thinking, and end-of-chapter problems emphasize grasping of the fundamentals as well as illustrate applications of theory to a wide variety of scenarios. KEY FEATURES • Includes several case studies ranging from manufacture of vitamin C, prilling tower to granulate urea to vanaspati discolouration and wilting of the lettuce. • Introduces generalized Fick’s law of diffusion. • Discusses hollow fibre mass exchangers. • Introduces new concepts such as cosolvent factor, Z step procedure for multistage cross-current extraction.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contactor has been designed and constructed for experimental studies of mass transfer with or without chemical reaction between two fluid phases. The contactor is flexible enough to investigate a wide range of variables affecting mass transfer coefficients. It is easy to operate; it could be operated either as a batch process or continuous process. The testing of the contactor verified the uniform mixing within a phase and the stability of the interface within the desired range of agitation. Water-n-butanol system was used to verify the contactor and to evaluate the mass transfer coefficient. A new concept was deduced to explain the turbulent mass transfer across liquid-liquid interface. It was found that when both phases were agitated at the same speed, there was no effect of the Reynolds number of one phase on the other phase mass transfer coefficient. These mass transfer coefficient values versus the agitated rates (or Reynolds number in each phase) were callsed asymtotic values or asymtotic line. If the agitation rate (rps) of a given phase is lower than the agitation in the other phase, its mass transfer coefficient is influenced by the mixing within the other phase below a critical Reynolds number, while the influence diminishes above it and its mass transfer coefficient approaches its asymtotic values. New simple correlations were developed for the water and organic liquid mass transfer coefficients. These correlations verified a diffusivity dependency of 0.5 for low diffusivity values and a diffusivity dependency of 0.67 for larger diffusivity values. This was in agreement with the King model for explaining mass transfer coefficients based upon interfacial turbulence. Since the asymtotic line conditions for both water and organic phases seems to represent the desired range of many industrial process conditions, the asymtotic mass transfer coefficient values with their corresponding agitation rate or Reynolds number were used to develop the correlations. The contactor, the new concepts about the transport phenomena in turbulent mass transfer across the liquid-liquid interface, and the new correlations will be useful in future studies toward design of industrial equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an easy-to-understand introduction to the computational mass transfer (CMT) method. On the basis of the contents of the first edition, this new edition is characterized by the following additional materials. It describes the successful application of this method to the simulation of the mass transfer process in a fluidized bed, as well as recent investigations and computing methods for predictions for the multi-component mass transfer process. It also demonstrates the general issues concerning computational methods for simulating the mass transfer of the rising bubble process. This new edition has been reorganized by moving the preparatory materials for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Heat Transfer into appendices, additions of new chapters, and including three new appendices on, respectively, generalized representation of the two-equation model for the CMT, derivation of the equilibrium distribution function in the lattice-Boltzmann method, and derivation of the Navier-Stokes equation using the lattice-Boltzmann model. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in the fields of computational methodologies for the numerical simulation of fluid dynamics, mass and/or heat transfer involved in separation processes (distillation, absorption, extraction, adsorption etc.), chemical/biochemical reactions, and other related processes.
