Book excerpt: The factors which determine the quantity of limestone needed to obtain acceptable SO/sub 2/ emission levels in the flue gas from fluidized-bed combustors have been reviewed. The most important factors are the mole ratio of calcium (in the stone) to sulfur (in the coal) in the feed, the gas phase residence time, the temperature, and the type of limestone. Both calcitic and dolomitic limestones have been studied since they behave differently in FBCs. The differences between atmospheric-pressure and pressurized FBCs in relation to limestone utilization are discussed. Differences in the average pore size of calcined limestones is the major cause of the differences in limestone-SO/sub 2/ reactivities in FBCs.

Book excerpt: A thermogravimetric analyzer was used to measure the reactivity of several limestones with SO2. The laboratory results can be used to predict coal combustion results for pilot-plant atmospheric pressure fluidized-beds. The TGA information was fitted to two different straight-line least-squares fits, these equations allowed prediction by two different methods of calcium utilization in atmospheric-pressure pilot plant FBC's from knowledge of only the CaCO3 content of the limestone. When predictions based on laboratory work for seven limestones were compared with the pilot plant experimental results of Pope, Evans and Robbins, Argonne National Laboratory, Consolidation Coal Co., and Morgantown Energy Research Center, agreement was good for all three methods.

Book excerpt: These studies are concerned with the development of processes for the regeneration of sulfated limestone from fluidized-bed combustors (FBC) and with the evaluation of corrosion when limestone sorbents treated with various salts (to increase their SO/sub 2/ reactivity) are used in FBCs. The results of a cyclic combustion (sulfation)--regeneration study of Germany Valley limestone are reported. A thermodynamic analysis was made of the reductive decomposition regeneration process to examine the interrelationship of: SO/sub 2/ concentration in the off-gas, temperature, pressure, oxidizing/reducing conditions, coal/sorbent ratio, feed gas oxygen concentration, and sorbent composition. A literature review was made on processes for the conversion of SO/sub 2/ to elemental sulfur. Operational characteristics are reported for a process development-scale atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor which has been put into use for corrosion studies, and the exposure conditions for the first three 100-h corrosion runs are reported. Limestone used in these runs included untreated limestone and limestone treated with 0.3 mol % CaCl/sub 2/ or 0.5 mol % NaCl.

The combustors will supply indirectly heated hot air and hot water for paint drying operations, washing processes, and space heating. The program is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy and the Owatonna Tool Company, and is one of five programs designed to demonstrate industrial applications of coal-fired fluidized bed equipment. The paper will describe the combustion system and the results of development tests with dolomitic limestone for sulfur emission control.

The relative effects of major economic variables on the economic feasibility of the fluidized-bed reductive decomposition process were determined for coals and sorbents for which cyclic combustion and regeneration data are available. Also, a computational method was developed for predicting the cost of a regeneration system when system size, various economic factors, coal type, sorbent type, and preliminary data on sorbent reactivity are given. A new, automated, atmospheric-pressure, 6-in.-dia, fluidized-bed coal combustion facility is being constructed to study the corrosive effects on materials of construction of (1) agents added to the combustor bed materials to accelerate limestone sulfation rate and (2) combinations of sulfation-accelerating agents and corrosion inhibitors.
