Book excerpt: Twelve bridges with latex modified concrete (LMC) overlays ranging in age from new to 13 years were studied and their general condition found to be good. The half-cell and chloride data were inconclusive because background data were not available for the older overlays, but the data should be useful some 5 to i0 years from now if similar data are collected at that time for comparison. The shear strength of the bond between the LMC overlays and the base concretes was about the same or greater than that of the base concrete, which indicates that good bonds were achieved and have been maintained. The permeability to chloride ions based on the rapid permeability test was an average of 773 coulombs (very low) for a 1.25 in. thick LMC overlay and 4,590 coulombs (high) for the base concretes. The inverse of the ratio of the logarithm of the permeability of the LMC overlay to that of the base concrete was 1.27, which provides a very conservative indication of the relative benefits to be obtained from the LMC overlay as compared to an A4 concrete overlay. The three sets of cost assumptions developed indicate that an LMC overlay costs 6% to 31% more than an A4 concrete overlay. Considering that the benefit-to-cost ratio ranged from 0.97 to 1.20, it was concluded that for bridges in which the low permeability provided by the LMC overlay is needed, the benefits usually obtained are worth the extra cost when compared to that of an A4 concrete overlay.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a premixed electrically conductive polymer concrete overlay for use on bridge decks and other concrete members, in conjunction with cathodic protection systems. A field demonstration was performed on a bridge deck (with corroding reinforcing steel) in Pulaski, Virginia, where an active cathodic protection system uses the electrically conductive overlay as the secondary anode to uniformly distribute the current across the bridge deck surface. The performance of the overlay cathodic protection system was monitored for 18 months. The data show that corrosion of the reinforcing steel embedded in the bridge deck was arrested. The overlay is soundly bonded, and there are no indications that the overlay is wearing due to traffic. This report is the conclusion of the research study. Details of the mix design and the installation of the conductive polymer concrete overlay are described in the Interim Report, FHWA-RD-88-145, dated January 1989.

Anode/steel couples were placed in simulated concrete environments consisting of sealed containers filled with silica sand treated with a mixed alkali-chloride solution. Measurements of current flow, circuit resistance, potential, and depolarization were made over a period of 18 weeks. Based on results obtained, aluminum and zinc anodes were found to hold the most promise for use as galvanic anodes in reinforced concrete bridge decks. A series of reinforced concrete test slabs were produced for evaluation of the candidate materials. Normal-weight structural concrete, structural lightweight concrete, free-draining concrete, and free-draining latex-modified concrete overlays were placed over the anodes to serve as riding surfaces. Performance of the cathodic protection (CP) systems was evaluated using current flow and depolarization techniques.

Book excerpt: Chloride-ion-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete bridge decks has become a major problem in the United States. Latex-modified concrete, low-slump dense concrete, and hot-mix asphalt membrane overlays are some of the most used rehabilitation methods. Epoxy-coated reinforcing steel was developed and promoted as a long-term corrosion protection method by the Federal Highway Administration. However, recent evidence has suggested that epoxy-coated reinforcing steel will not provide adequate long-term corrosion protection. The Reynolds Metals Company developed an aluminum bridge deck system as a proposed alternative to conventional reinforced steel bridge deck systems. The deck consists of a polymer concrete overlay and an aluminum substrate. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the bond durability between the overlay and the aluminum substrate after specimens were conditioned in various temperature and humidity conditions. The different environmental conditionings all had a significant effect on the bond durability. Specimens conditioned at 30°C, 45 °C, and 60°C at 98 percent relative humidity all showed a decrease in interfacial bond strength after conditioning. There was also a decrease in the interfacial bond strength for the specimens conditioned in freezing and thawing cycles and specimens conditioned in a salt water soak. The only exposure condition that increased the bond strength was drying the specimens continuously in an oven at 60°C.

Book excerpt: Protection systems are placed on bridge decks to retard the intrusion of chlorides and moisture that can eventually cause corrosion deterioration. The Virginia Department of Transportation typically uses hydraulic cement concrete (HCC) overlays of latex-modified concrete (LMC); LMC with very early hardening cement (LMC-VE); and silica fume concrete (SFC) and epoxy overlays for deck protection. Occasionally, a conventional asphalt overlay and waterproof membrane system is used. Rosphalt is an asphalt that is considered to be impermeable and has been used on decks without placement of a membrane. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the construction, initial condition, and cost of the Rosphalt overlays placed on two bridges in Virginia: (1) the northbound lanes of I-85 over Route 629 and the eastbound and westbound lanes of Span 22 of the Norris Bridge on State Route 3 over the Rappahannock River. As a comparison to Rosphalt, a conventional asphalt overlay and waterproof membrane system was placed on the adjacent bridge on the southbound lanes of I-85 over Route 629. Emphasis was placed on comparing the wearing and protection systems with respect to speed and ease of construction (including lane closure time), initial condition as indicated by physical properties, protection and skid resistance, and cost. An objective was also to compare these asphalt protection systems to HCC overlays, LMC, and SFC and epoxy overlays. Costs varied greatly depending on the estimates used and the bid prices. Although estimates for the Norris Bridge indicated Rosphalt as the lowest cost option, bid prices showed it was likely the most expensive option. Three overlay options, Rosphalt, SM-9.5 mixture and membrane, and LMC-VE, are rapid and can provide major reductions in traffic control and user costs. Based on laboratory tests, Rosphalt is more fatigue and rut resistant than the SM-9.5 mixture and should last longer, but based on the cost of the first two installations in Virginia, Rosphalt is too expensive to be considered as a competitive overlay system.
