Book excerpt: A typical flexible pavement structure used by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) consists of several layers, including the subgrade, aggregate base, asphalt concrete base, intermediate course, and surface course. A light application of an asphaltic material, referred to as tack coat, is commonly used between the asphalt layers to distribute the stresses between the layers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interlayer bond strength resulting from the use of three tack coat materials (SS-1h, rubberized tack, and non-tracking tack) commonly used in Ohio. The interface bond strength of laboratory-prepared samples was measured using a specialized fixture developed by Pine Test Equipment, Inc. that allows loading the samples in shear until failure along the interface. This study investigated the effect of the specimen diameter (4-inch and 6-inch), tack coat application rate (0.04 gallon/yd2 and 0.1 gallon/yd2), testing temperature (20°C and 25°C), and loading rate (0.1 inch/min and 2 inch/min) on the interface bond strength. The rheological properties of the three tack coat materials were also evaluated in accordance with AASHTO T 59-09. The highest interface bond strength was observed for the non-tracking tack, followed by the SS-1h and the rubberized tack, which were found to have comparable bond strengths to laboratory samples prepared with no tack coat. The optimum tack coat application rate was found to be dependent on the tack coat material type and the testing conditions (i.e., testing temperature and loading rate). A decrease in the interface bond strength was observed for the rubberized tack with the increase in the tack coat application rate, while an increase in the interface bond strength was noticed for SS-1h and the non-tracking tack with the increase in the tack coat application rate. In general, comparable results were obtained using the 4-inch and the 6-inch samples. As expected, higher interface bond strength was observed at the lower testing temperature for all samples. In addition, a higher interface bond strength was obtained for all samples when using the faster loading rate of 2 inch/min.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavements are usually constructed in several layers and most of pavement design and evaluation techniques assume that adjacent asphalt layers are fully bonded together and no displacement is developed between them. However, full bonding is not always achieved and a number of pavement failures have been linked to poor bond condition Theoretical research showed that the distribution of stresses, strains and deflections within the pavement structure is highly influenced by the bond condition between the adjacent layers. Slippage at the interface between the binder course and the base could significantly reduce the life of the overall pavement structure. If slippage occurs within the interface between the surfacing and the binder course, the maximum horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the surfacing becomes excessive and causing the rapid surfacing failure. This condition becomes worse when a significant horizontal load exists. This thesis is concerned with the assessment of bond between asphalt layers. The main objective of this thesis is to provide guidance for assessing bond between asphalt layers, in order to facilitate the construction of roads with more assurance of achieving the design requirements. Further modification to the modified Leutner test has been performed. An investigation regarding the torque bond test and the effect of trafficking on bond have also been undertaken. A bond database on the modified Leutner test has been developed. An analysis has been performed to estimate the achievable values of bond strengths on typical UK road constructions obtained from the bond database. The values were then compared to the results from an analytical analysis to predict the required bond strength at the interface and other standards in Germany and Switzerland to recommend specification limits of bond strength for UK roads.

Book excerpt: Premature cracking in asphalt pavements and overlays continues to shorten pavement lifecycles and creates significant economic and environmental burden. In response, RILEM Technical Committee TC 241-MCD on Mechanisms of Cracking and Debonding in Asphalt and Composite Pavements has conducted a State-of-the-Art Review (STAR), as detailed in this comprehensive book. Cutting-edge research performed by RILEM members and their international partners is presented, along with summaries of open research questions and recommendations for future research. This book is organized according to the theme areas of TC 241-MCD - i.e., fracture in the asphalt bulk material, interface debonding behaviour, and advanced measurement systems. This STAR is expected to serve as a long term reference for researchers and practitioners, as it contributes to a deeper fundamental understanding of the mechanisms behind cracking and debonding in asphalt concrete and composite pavement systems.

Book excerpt: The continuum model of the pavement structure with different bond conditions indicates that the different bond conditions may lead to totally different stress distribution in the pavement layers. Pavement with Novabond® as bonding agent has higher cracking resistance than the pavement with conventional tack coat as bonding agent. The modeling of composite specimen tests was performed to investigate the mechanism of the bonding effects on top-down and reflective cracking performance. Different bonding conditions were assumed due to the different application rate and type of the bonding agent. The modeling results show agreement with test results. The model and the assumption were considered reasonable. Novabond® was determined has a positive effect on top-down and reflective cracking performance. The model clearly proved that the interface bonding conditions have significant effect on cracking performance.

One of the most important distresses exhibited in flexible pavements is their tendency to crack due to repeated loading. The current body of literature on asphalt binders has yet to establish experimentally how these cracks are born at a microscopic level, and a proper test method for evaluating a binder’s resistance to forming cracks. This dissertation proposes answers toward a solution to both of the above gaps. Eight asphalt binders were evaluated experimentally using a novel poker chip test that realistically mirrors the state of stress experienced by a binder in an asphalt mix. Based on these results, the interplay between stiffness, strength, and ductility of the binder was evaluated and used as a screening tool to for outlier binders. In addition, the cavitation surfaces and their relationship with strength was observed. Subsequently, dark field microscopy was used to observe the origination of the cavitation instability in the binder. Cavitation was observed to occur at the interface between inclusions in the bulk of the binder and the matrix itself. A theoretical framework for the reasons for this based on classical solutions in mechanics is proposed. Finally, X-ray computed tomography was used to obtain images of an asphalt mixture microstructure at two different scales. These images were meshed to form a finite element model, which was used to determine critical points in a mixture for cracking. The findings indicated high triaxiality could be appropriately modeled in the laboratory using the poker chip test at high aspect (diameter/thickness) ratio. This high aspect ratio creates an approximate confined stress state for testing, and also allows for nearly uniform stress distribution in the test specimen. This was validated using finite element analysis to confirm the poker chip test as suitable for laboratory testing of asphalt binders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current practice related to the use of tack coat prior to application of microsurfacing varies across the states to states. Few states require the use of tack coat, assuming it will allow a proper bonding at the interface between the micro-surfacing layer and existing pavement. On the other hand, the majority of the states do not use tack coat. They believe is that the consistency of the micro-surfacing mix allows it to be spread uniformly, resulting in a proper bond at the interface. However, no research has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of tack coat on interface bond strength between the micro-surfacing layer and the existing pavement. The objective of this study was twofold. First, a laboratory test scheme was developed to characterize the bond strength between the micro-surfacing layer and the existing pavement hot mix asphalt (HMA) surface. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of tack coat, samples were prepared in the laboratory with varying tack coat application rate. Additionally, different percentages of residual binder content were also used to study the influence of residual binder content on bond strength characteristics. Two types of bonding strength tests were used including “Pull-off” and “Torque” bonding strength test. The pull-off test was carried out using two commercially available devices: 1- Proceq DY 206 and 2- Com-Ten pull off tester. A torque device was developed in the laboratory to carry out the torque tests. Secondly, a field-testing test program was4 established which include in-situ testing of the bond strength and laboratory testing of the cores collected from the field.

The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.
