Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a theoretical and practical introduction to seismic-while-drilling by using the drill-bit noise. This recent technology offers important products for geophysical control of drilling. It involves aspects typical of borehole seismics and of the drilling control surveying, hitherto the sole domain of mudlogging. For aspects related to the drill-bit source performance and borehole acoustics, the book attempts to provide a connection between experts working in geophysics and in drilling. There are different ways of thinking related to basic knowledge, operational procedures and precision in the observation of the physical quantities. The goal of the book is to help "build a bridge" between geophysicists involved in seismic while drilling - who may need to familiarize themselves with methods and procedures of drilling and drilling-rock mechanics - and drillers involved in geosteering and drilling of "smart wells" - who may have to familiarize themselves with seismic signals, wave resolution and radiation. For instance, an argument of common interest for drilling and seismic while drilling studies is the monitoring of the drill-string and bit vibrations. This volume contains a large number of real examples of SWD data analysis and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since composite materials have been used in the aerospace industry, there have been problems with cutting and machining them. One of the reasons for this problem was the dearth of available tooling to machine composites. As research in composites progressed and as composites found wide application in the aerospace industry, efforts have been made to develop good and efficient tools to machine them. Nevertheless, this effort is still ongoing to develop better tools, as the problems faced during machining have not been totally eliminated. Of the different machining operations performed on composite materials, drilling is the most common. The major problems faced during the drilling of composite materials are delamination and fibers pull out. Delamination reduces the strength of the composite. Another problem that persists is the effect of excess cutting temperatures on the quality of the drilled hole. Excess cutting temperatures affect the dimensional accuracy of the drilled hole and deteriorate its surface finish. Excess cutting temperatures during drilling may melt the matrix and char the drilled hole. Research and experiments conducted on drilling of composite materials have shown that as the cutting edges of the drill bit wear out, the heat generated and the thrust force produced increases. Increase in thrust force gives rise to delamination. Also tool geometry plays a big role in producing a hole with an acceptable quality. Hence, it is important to thoroughly investigate the performance of the drill bit in terms of producing a good hole quality. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the performance of drill bits when drilling carbon-fiber composites. Drill bits were evaluated for temperature, Hole oversize, surface roughness, roundness, thrust force, torque, damage area, and tool wear. By conducting experiments using different drill bits, the drill bit performance was determined for every parameter in question. Based on the results of these experiments, it was possible to determine which drill bit performs optimally for the different parameters investigated in this research work. Also by evaluating the Hole oversize, roundness, and surface roughness, it was be possible to study the effect of speed and feed rate on these parameters. Also tool wear analysis was carried out as a part of this research work.

Book excerpt: Well drilling is an important process for extracting oil, natural gas, water, and mineral materials. Opening wells requires boring through earth formations, which can range from very soft to very hard. Penetrating into such formations requires specialized tools and operation procedures which should be employed based on the environment and application. Rotary drilling, in which a drill bit is used to crush the rock and penetrate into the formation, is one of the main methods of well drilling. Rotary cone bits are one of the main types of drill bits used for rotary drilling. There are two main problems encountered when drilling with rotary cone bits. Excessive vibration can cause damage to the entire system and can decrease efficiency of the drilling process. Failure of the bit's bearings and seals can also result in damage to the bit and cessation of the drilling process. In recent years, a great deal of research has been undertaken to address these problems and find appropriate solutions to improve drilling efficiency and production rate while reducing the overall cost of drilling. In this thesis, a new design for rotary cone bits, with the objective of improving overall drilling performance, is presented. First, a new pattern for distribution of inserts over the cone is presented, which results in reduced vibration of the drillstring. Second a new design for the bit's bearings is introduced that is capable of operating in harsh environments. Finally, an experimental set-up is introduced to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs.

Book excerpt: The drilling process is one of the most important and expensive aspects of the oil and gas industry. Drilling is required during mining for different ore production processes such as blasting and large drilling operations. Overall, it contributes significantly to the total cost of mining. As a result, an accurate prediction of the rate of penetration (ROP) is crucial for drilling performance optimization and contributes directly to reducing drilling costs. Knowledge of drilling performance is a powerful tool to aid in the development of a consistent drilling plan as well as to anticipate issues that may arise during drilling operations. Several approaches, with varying degrees of complexity and accuracy, have been tested to predict drilling performance, but all have shown several limitation to predict the complete drilling performance curve including locate the founder point. This limitation can be extended to their capacity of covering different drilling scenarios with high accuracy. In this thesis (manuscript style) a review of the history of drilling performance prediction is conducted with emphasis on the rotary drilling of small and large diameters. The approaches are grouped into two categories: physics-based models and data-driven models. Due to the low complexity of the physics-based models and the scarcity of drilling performance prediction research that reports the founder point location, a novel physics-based ROP prediction model for rotary drilling that includes the founder point location is presented. This model presents high accuracy to predict the drilling performance for fixed cutter drill bit, roller-cone drill bit, and large diameter drilling operations. The behaviors of the new model constants (drillability coefficient and drillability constant term) are discussed when analyzed in relation to the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), bit diameter, and rotary speed. Additionally, a new experimental setup approach was developed based on the circular movement of the full-scale disc cutter that are normally used in raise boring and tunnel boring machines. This setup will permit to simulate the large diameter drilling operations in laboratory scale aiming the understanding of the fragmentation process and application of optimization to this scenario.
