Book excerpt: Proposed helicopter helmet mounted displays will be used to alert the pilot to a variety of conditions, from threats to equipment problems. The present research was performed under the NASA Safe All-weather Flight Operations Research (SAFOR) program supported by a joint Army/NASA research agreement. The purpose of the research was to examine ways to optimize the alerting effectiveness of helmet display symbology. The research used two approaches to increasing the effectiveness of alerts. One was to increase the ability of the alert to attract attention by using the entire display surface. The other was to include information about the required response in the alert itself. The investigation was conducted using the NASA Ames Research Center's six-degree-of-freedom vertical motion simulator (VMS) with a rotorcraft cockpit. Helmet display symbology was based on the AH-64's pilot night vision system (PNVS), cruise mode symbology. A standardized mission was developed, that consisted of 11 legs. The mission included four tasks, which allowed variation in the frequency of alerts. The general trend in the data points to a small benefit from both the full-screen alert and the partial information alert.DeMaio, Joe and Rutkowski, Michael (Technical Monitor)Ames Research CenterHELMET MOUNTED DISPLAYS; H-60 HELICOPTER; NIGHT VISION; AIRCRAFT PILOTS; DEGREES OF FREEDOM; COCKPITS; VERTICAL MOTION SIMULATORS

Book excerpt: Laboratory and flight test evaluations have consistently demonstrated the potential for helmet-mounted display (HMD) presented information to enhance air combat performance. The Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL's) Helmet-Mounted Sight Plus (HMS+) program seeks to provide further enhancement by enabling the presentation of multi-color symbology and sensor imagery. To take proper advantage of color-capable HMDs, systematic evaluations must be conducted to identify the best color-coding techniques. The experiment described here is the second we have conducted to address this need. The first experiment identified the better of two competing color coding strategies for air-to-air weapons symbology and indicated that pilots preferred the color codes over an otherwise equivalent monochrome baseline. The present experiment compared the "winning" color code to the monochrome baseline during trials of a complex multi-player air-to-air weapon delivery scenario. Twelve fighter pilots representing three different countries (U.S., U.K., and Sweden) flew simulator trials that included target identification, intercept, attack, missile launch, and defensive maneuvering tasks. Participants subjective feedback and performance data indicated a preference for color coded symbology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) may become a primary source of head-up information in future tactical aircraft. In evaluations, HMDs have produced improved situation awareness and mission performance. To realize this improved performance, HMD equipped pilots spend significantly more time looking off-axis, away from traditional displays. Accordingly, it is important that HMD information be designed so targeting and ownship status symbology is effective and safe. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is working to develop an optimized HMD symbology set. Toward this end, symbol designs must accommodate the conditions of intended use, technology limitations, and integration with other displays. This paper discusses efforts to design target tracking/location and ownship status symbologies for the day/night all weather fixed-wing tactical aircraft application. Design principles derived from both laboratory and flight test are presented. These principles relate to symbology frame of reference, orientation, compression, and line of sight mechanization. Evaluation methodologies are also discussed.

Book excerpt: A two-part experimental simulation study was performed to examine ways of improving Ground Collision Avoidance Systems (GCAS) for fighter aircraft through the use of Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) symbology. Modality and information presentation issues were addressed through the design and testing of five display formats. An audio alert with no visual symbology was used as a baseline. The addition of visual alert symbology was tested using a head-fixed iconic alerting cue. Formats for additional recovery information were tested using an aircraft-fixed guidance cue, a head-fixed guidance cue, and a head-fixed guidance cue with a pitch ladder. Subjects were given audio and visual side tasks and then responded to GCAS alerts. Recovery performance and subjective ratings of the displays were recorded. Lower reaction times were observed when a head-fixed visual alert was given in addition to the standard audio alert. No significant differences were seen in subject recovery performance, measured by altitude loss and response times. However, subject head motion varied significantly with display type. Subjects tended to fixate on guidance and state symbology when it was provided. This led to cases where pilots performed entire recoveries with their heads off-boresight when using head-fixed guidance symbology. Subjects varied in their preference of symbology, but head-fixed guidance and state information was preferred over the other display categories using the Analytical Hierarchy Process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a review of human attention research literature relevant to head-up display (HUD) and helmet-mounted display (HMD) systems in use or under development for rotary-wing aircraft. The fundamental attentional issue for HUDs and HMDs is division of attention between the outside-the-window scene and the displayed symbology. Selective attention applies more to elements within the HUD or HMD symbology. The review identified a number of areas for further research. These are effects of dichoptic viewing, eye dominance, identification of strategies for effective time-sharing, HUD and HMD training, and pilot selection.

Book excerpt: Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) present flight, navigation, and weapon information in the pilot's line of sight. The HMD was developed to allow the pilot to retain aircraft and weapon information while looking off boresight. This document reviews current state of the art in HMDs and presents a design guide for the HMD engineer in identifying several critical HMD issues: symbol stabilization, inadequate definitions, undefined symbol drive laws, helmet considerations, and Field Of View (FOV) vs. resolution tradeoff requirements. In particular, display latency is a key issue for HMDs. In addition to requiring further experimental studies, it impacts the definition and control law issues. Symbol stabilization is also critical. In the case of the Apache helicopter, the lack of compensation for pilot head motion creates excessive workload during hovering and Nap Of the Earth (NOE) flight. This translates into excessive training requirements. There is no agreed upon set of definitions or descriptions for how HMD symbols are driven to compensate for pilot head motion. A set of definitions is proposed to address this. There are several specific areas where simulation and flight experiments are needed: development of hover and NOE symbologies which compensate for pilot head movement; display latency and sampling, and the tradeoff between FOV, sensor resolution and symbology. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of Project Have SYCLOPS, a limited evaluation of off-boresight flight reference symbologies for fixed wing helmet-mounted displays (HMDs). The overall objective was to compare three HMD flight reference displays containing own- ship status information as aids during operationally representative, off-boresight, air-to-air and air-to-ground piloting tasks. The three symbologies were the Baseline (BL), Baseline Plus (BL+) and Advanced Non-Distributed Flight Reference (ANDFR). The Air Force Research Laboratory, Human Effectiveness Directorate (AFRL/HECV) requested this testing. USAF Test Pilot School (TPS) Class O2B conducted two calibration flights and twelve VISTA flight test sorties at Edwards AFB, CA from 10 Apr 03 to 23 Apr 03, totaling 19.3 hours. Three T-38 support sorties were also flown totaling 3.5 hours. All test objectives were met.

Book excerpt: As the Army increases its reliance upon helmet mounted displays (HMDs) or head-up displays (HUDs), it is paramount that displays are developed that meet the operational needs of the warfighter. During the development cycle, questions always arise concerning the operational requirements of the HMD. These include questions concerning luminance, contrast, color and resolution. To provide intelligent answers to these operational questions, a method has been devised to evaluate these issues. Integral to this method is a HMD simulation model. The model allows for contrast correct visualizations of see-through imagery. The imagery consists of symbology/situational maps overlaid over natural backgrounds. Using visual psychophysical procedures, observers judge the quality of the symbology for a range of luminance and background conditions. The simulated images were analyzed and statistical correlates were developed that could relate to the observer's ratings. Metrics were developed that could help predict the operational luminance requirements for HMD or HUD symbology.
