This book was released on 2005 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though moisture sensitivity of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures has been recognized as a major form of distress in asphalt concrete pavements since the advent of asphalt paving technology, the mechanism of this problem has not been clearly identified until now. However, it has been agreed that it can be characterized by the loss of adhesive bond between the asphalt binder and the aggregate or by a softening of the cohesive bonds within the asphalt binder, both of which are due to the action of loading under traffic in the presence of moisture. The evaluation of Hot Mix Asphalt moisture sensitivity has been divided into two categories: visual inspection test and mechanical test. However, most of them have been developed in pre-Superpave mix design. This research was conducted to develop a new test protocol which can overcome the problems of the current procedures and to evaluate the possibility of using the Nottingham Asphalt Tester (NAT) in the resulting procedure.

Book Synopsis Evaluating Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixes by : Elizabeth Rae Hunter
Download or read book Evaluating Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixes written by Elizabeth Rae Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project utilized laboratory evaluations to study effects of freeze-thaw cycling on the tensile strength of eight Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures and to determine if the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester could be utilized to measure moisture susceptibility of Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures. The evaluation involved eight Hot Mix Asphalt mixtures from combinations of two aggregate types and four asphalt-additive-aging possibilities. Laboratory testing was accomplished in the first phase with the production of 2.5 by 4 inch cores that were freeze-thaw cycled and tested for their indirect tensile strength following Wyoming modified AASHTO T283. The second phase was accomplished using 3 by 6 inch cores that were conditioned and tested for rutting using the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester. Finally, a statistical analysis was performed to determine if performance of the various mixtures was significantly different in groups of asphalt types and to determine if the Georgia Loaded Wheel Tester was a viable measurement tool for moisture susceptibility.

Book excerpt: During the past 25 years, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, have carried out a wide variety of activities to improve understanding of the challenges in containing and reducing ethnic conflicts, violent extremism, and terrorism. Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

Book Synopsis Sensitivity of HMA Performance to Aggregate Shape Measured Using Conventional and Image Analysis by : Rajni Sukhwani
Download or read book Sensitivity of HMA Performance to Aggregate Shape Measured Using Conventional and Image Analysis written by Rajni Sukhwani and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this project is on the evaluation of the sensitivity of HMA performance to aggregate properties measured using conventional and image analysis methods. Wavelet image analysis is used to measure texture. Image analysis methods based on the changes in the gradient on a particle boundary, and the difference between a particle radius in a certain direction and that of an equivalent ellipse are used to quantify angularity. Form is quantified by a method that evaluates the changes in particle radii with a fixed incremental change in the central angle. Researchers measured the performance of HMA mixes with different aggregates using the asphalt pavement analyzer (APA), Hamburg wheel tracking device (HW), and dynamic modulus test (DM).

Book Synopsis Effect of Segregation on Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer by : Stephen Alan Cross
Download or read book Effect of Segregation on Hot Mix Asphalt Using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer written by Stephen Alan Cross and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Segregation of hot mix asphalt is a recurring problem in the paving industry. There is little documented research that quantifies the effects of segregation on mix properties and performance. The Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) is a new class of pavement tester available to evaluate pavement performance. The APA can evaluate the rutting potential, moisture susceptibility and fatigue life of bituminous mixtures. Materials were available from a previous study (K-TRAN: KU-96-6) on segregation for use in evaluating the use of the APA with Kansas mixtures and materials. Two surface mixes, a BM-1B and BM-2, were fabricated to different levels of segregation as determined in the K-TRAN: KU-96-6 study. The mixtures were tested in the APA for rutting, moisture damage and fatigue life.
