Book excerpt: Laboratory and field evaluations were conducted to examine four ice- based portable cooling systems and one thermoelectric vehicle mounted cooling system, to assess and compare their performance under laboratory and field conditions. There were three battery-operated circulating liquid cooling garments, a passive frozen gel pack vest, and a thermoelectric circulating liquid cooling garment. The thermal manikin tests were conducted in a 35 C (95 F), 5% relative humidity, environment with the mannequins surface temperature at 35 C (95 F). The manikin was dressed in the Battle Dress Overgarment (BDO) chemical ensemble in all of the tests. Army and Air Force personnel took part in five field evaluations. These personnel provided information related to compatibility, mobility, ease of operation and donning and doffing.

This study evaluated two commercial microclimate cooling systems for operational characteristics and physiological effectiveness in reducing heat stress. Eight male soldiers attempted eight 180-minute heat exposures while wearing MOPP 4 level clothing and one of two commercial systems. During these tests, subjects rested (metabolic rate 105 W) or exercised by walking on a treadmill (average metabolic rate 340 W) in a desert (49DGC 20% relative humidity, 70 W radiant heat load) and a tropic (35DGC, 75% relative humidity) environment. There was no statistical difference (P

Book excerpt: Professionals in dire need of body cooling, namely the First Responder community, can currently choose from an extensive variety of commercially available microclimate cooling products incorporating a wide range of technologies. Since not all products will meet the requirements of all users, it is important to understand the characteristics of the systems that are available, prior to making a selection. Currently, no standards exist for validating microclimate cooling systems, so users are forced to rely on vendor claims when purchasing equipment. The goals of this project include searching the commercial market for all current microclimate cooling products, and evaluating a representative cross-section of products for their thermal performance. The information gathered was compiled in a database and a report, and can be provided to Emergency Responders to aid in their equipment-purchasing process.

Book excerpt: The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility (NCTRF) conducted a laboratory evaluation to compare two commercially available, portable, liquid microclimate cooling systems for their effectiveness in reducing heat stress and for their operational characteristics. The systems were the Model 1905 Cool Vest manufactured by ILC Dover, Inc. (ILC), and the Cool Head manufactured by Life Support Systems, Inc. (LSSI). The two systems were evaluated on nine test subjects wearing the Navy utility uniform and performing light-to-moderate exercise for 3 hours in an environment of 43 C dry bulb, 29 C dew point (WBGT 36 C). Compared with a control test with no cooling, use of either cooling system enabled subjects to complete the 3-hour heat exposures. Rectal temperature responses were the same when either cooling system was used. Heart rates were slightly lower with the ILC Dover system compared to the LSSI system. The ILC systems experienced fewer failures, and were easier to operate than the LSSI systems. The ILC system is also lighter, less bulky, and much less expensive than the LSSI system. Based on their similarity in reducing heat stress, and the ILC Dover system's profile, reliability and lower cost, the ILC Dover Model 1905 Cool Vest system is recommended over the Cool Head for Navy use. This report describes the two cooling systems and the results of the heat stress evaluation. (aw).

Focussing on the process of resource creation and utilization it emphasizes the need of equitable development integrating local needs, resources, people and functions. The resource exploitation and their utilization are two independent economic activities influenced by different algorithms and usually have manifested in core-periphery relationship. Reviews the persistent problems of economic development in perspective of exploitation of natural resources with the objective to provide some clues for occurrence and persistence of regional disparities and for suggesting a development model synchronising both the resource management and environmental protection.

Book excerpt: Three commercially available microclimate cooling systems were evaluated for their ability to reduce heat stress in men exercising in a hot environment while wearing high insulative, low permeability clothing. Five male volunteers performed three 180-min experiments (three repeats of 10 min rest, 50 min walking at 440 watts) in an environment of 38 C dry bulb (Tdb), 12 C dew point (Tdp). The cooling systems were: ILC Dover Model 19 Coolvest (ILC), mean inlet temperature 5.0 C; 2) LSSI Coolhead (LSSI), mean inlet temperature 14.5 C; and 3) Thermacor Cooling Vest (THERM), mean inlet temperature 28.3 C. Endurance time (ET), heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (Tre), mean skin temperature (Tsk), sweating rate (SR), rated perceived exertion (RPE), and thermal sensation (TS) were measured. The subjects self terminated on all LSSI tests because of headaches. Statistical analyses were performed on data collected at 60 min to have values on all subjects. Keywords: Reprints, Heat stress(Physiology), Exercise(Physiology).

Book excerpt: Abstract : Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can severely restrict the ability of aircrew and support personnel to accomplish their missions. Under emergency conditions of bail-out, ejection and ditching of fixed or rotary-wing aircraft on land or in water, the survival rate of aircrew and passengers is also affected by the intensity of thermal stress experienced and the duration of exposure to the thermal stress. This has all recently been borne out by the experience of intense air operations in the Gulf War. This symposium reviewed the operational conditions experienced under extreme hot and cold weather. The papers presented at this Symposium highlighted recent advances in thermal physiology, clothing sciences, personal flying equipment, and microclimate cooling. Emphasis was placed on the potential applications of these advances in situations where thermal stress, or the expectation of thermal stress, may confound the efficient achievement of mission objectives

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines current thermoelectric cooling (TEC) systems for possible microclimate cooling applications. TEC systems offer simplicity, but have some drawbacks. Although TEC systems have few moving parts, the power required for operation and the weight of the systems limit their usefulness in dismounted, untethered modes of operation. Unlike phase change material (PCM) cooling system TEC's can provide uninterrupted cooling for extended periods of time. TEC's operate on electricity and so do not suffer from the logistical difficulties of resupplying frozen PCM's to the field. In comparison to vapor compression (VC) cooling systems, TEC's are heavier and significantly less energy efficient. For tethered modes, with a large source of power, the simple TEC systems of fer a great deal. TEC's lose their advantage if power is limited and/or the complete system, including the power source, must be carried by an individuals. (MM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Air Force has accomplished a number of research studies which evaluated the efficacy of selected personal cooling approaches for alleviating heat stress in personnel wearing certain protective clothing. Most of this work involved laboratory, as opposed to field, studies and incorporated human subjects performing work in either warm or hot environments. Both air and liquid microclimate cooling systems were evaluated. The general findings include: (1) personal microclimate cooling systems (both air and liquid) were shown to remove significant quantities of body heat, (2) in general, commercially available systems were Inferior to in-house prototype units, (3) backpack (ambulatory) systems usage would likely have a limited user audience for a number of reasons, (4) some near-term; partial solutions to the problem may be at hand for selected deployments, and (5) microclimate cooling technologies on the horizon will likely not provide an optimum solution for most ground crew applications. The USAF Armstrong Laboratory has limited plans for further research in this area ... Air cooling, Microclimate liquid cooling, Heat stress, Personal cooling, Intermittent cooling.
