Book excerpt: "This study presents the results of the evaluation of the Coalbed Methane (CBM) resource potential of the Cook Inlet Basin using a computer-aided well log analysis of the subsurface data. Coal seams were identified from the well logs. Formation and reservoir fluid properties including porosity, water saturation and net pay thickness of the coal seams were determined. The analysis revealed discontinuous coal seams interspaced largely by mudstone, silt, and sandstone formations within the depth of investigation. The CBM resource (Original Gas In Place) and recoverable reserves were estimated on per acre-foot basis. Monte Carlo simulation was run to refine the estimated CBM reserves and to allow for variations in the measured petrophysical input parameters used in the resource evaluation"--Leaf iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication assesses the exploration opportunities for coalbed methane in Canada, based on a review of available geological, engineering, and production data from wellbores that sampled and tested various coal intervals from the major coal-bearing basins in Canada. A set of geological parameters was established that includes the ideal key threshold values for successful coalbed methane gas generation, storage, and producibility. The thresholds presented are guidelines & base levels that allow different exploration plays to be evaluated & compared. For each well, target zones and/or structures were defined, and data analyses & interpretations were conducted to determine whether the completed wellbore tests adequately assessed the coalbed methane potential. From the results of this technical assessment, several coalbed methane prospective areas are delineated in four distinctive exploration play categories: restricted basins, shallow foreland basins, deep foreland basins, and foothills & mountain regions. For each high priority target area, a recommended next step of assessment is defined.

Book excerpt: Coalbed gas has been considered a hazard since the early 19th century when the first mine gas explosions occurred in the United States in 1810 and France in 1845. In eastern Australia methane-related mine disasters occurred late in the 19th century with hundreds of lives lost in New South Wales, and as recently as 1995 in Queensland's Bowen Basin. Ventilation and gas drainage technologies are now in practice. However, coalbed methane recently is becoming more recognized as a potential source of energy; rather than emitting this gas to the atmosphere during drainage of gassy mines it can be captured and utilized. Both economic and environmental concerns have sparked this impetus to capture coalbed methane. The number of methane utilization projects has increased in the United States in recent years as a result, to a large extent, of development in technology in methane recovery from coal seams. Between 1994 and 1997, the number of mines in Alabama, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia recovering and utilizing methane increased from 1 0 to 17. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that close to 49 billion cubic feet (Bet) of methane was recovered in 1996, meaning that this amount was not released into the atmosphere. It is estimated that in the same year total emissions of methane equaled 45. 7 Bcf. Other coal mines are being investigated at present, many ofwhich appear to be promising for the development of cost-effective gas recovery.

Book excerpt: In some coalbeds, naturally occurring water pressure holds methane-the main component of natural gas-fixed to coal surfaces and within the coal. In a coalbed methane (CBM) well, pumping water from the coalbeds lowers this pressure, facilitating the release of methane from the coal for extraction and use as an energy source. Water pumped from coalbeds during this process-CBM 'produced water'-is managed through some combination of treatment, disposal, storage, or use, subject to compliance with federal and state regulations. CBM produced water management can be challenging for regulatory agencies, CBM well operators, water treatment companies, policy makers, landowners, and the public because of differences in the quality and quantity of produced water; available infrastructure; costs to treat, store, and transport produced water; and states' legal consideration of water and produced water. Some states consider produced water as waste, whereas others consider it a beneficial byproduct of methane production. Thus, although current technologies allow CBM produced water to be treated to any desired water quality, the majority of CBM produced water is presently being disposed of at least cost rather than put to beneficial use. This book specifically examines the Powder River, San Juan, Raton, Piceance, and Uinta CBM basins in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The conclusions and recommendations identify gaps in data and information, potential beneficial uses of CBM produced water and associated costs, and challenges in the existing regulatory framework.

Book excerpt: In order to assess the economic coal bed methane potential of the Illinois Basin, the geological surveys of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky performed a geological assessment of their respective parts of the Illinois Basin. A considerable effort went into generating cumulative coal thickness and bed structure maps to identify target areas for exploratory drilling. Following this, the first project well was drilled in White County, Illinois in October 2003. Eight additional wells were subsequently drilled in Indiana (3) and Kentucky (5) during 2004 and 2005. In addition, a five spot pilot completion program was started with three wells being completed. Gas contents were found to be variable, but generally higher than indicated by historical data. Gas contents of more than 300 scf/ton were recovered from one of the bore holes in Kentucky. Collectively, our findings indicate that the Illinois Basin represents a potentially large source of economic coal bed methane. Additional exploration will be required to refine gas contents and the economics of potential production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a literature search that was aimed at identifying the potential for recoverable coalbed methane resources at naval facilities in the United States. Several geologic factors that influence the occurrence of coalbed methane were examined, the most important of which is coal rank. Other factors include the formation pressure, the permeability and porosity of the coal, the degree of fracturing (deformational history), the depth of burial, the distance to the outcrop, and the permeability of adjacent strata. The evaluation of the potential of any natural resource requires the development of a working model to keep in perspective the many factors affecting the occurrence of that resource. Models based on major tectonic environments wre used in evaluating all naval facilities in the United States for their coalbed methane potential. While none of the sites was found to be in a primary target area for the occurrence of coalbed methane, several Navy sites were identified as having some potential. However, assessing that potential, determining the quality of the resource and the applicability of the resource ownership and the resource disposition, will take a great deal more effort. (Author).

To aid in the development of the CBM industry in the state, the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) has studied the CBM geology of Illinois. These studies include the mapping of locations of multiple stacked coal seams; measurement of coal seam gas contents; and determination of methane gas origins.

Book excerpt: "Recent telephone conversations indicate considerable interest in the methane potential for Alaska's coalbeds. Lower 48 production for 1992 was 550 BCF, over 95% coming from the San Juan and Black Warrior basins. Alaska contains nearly 1/2 of the United States coal reserves, however, little data exist on Alaska's coalbed methane potential. This information gap is hindering Alaska's ability to participate in, and benefit from, the development of a vast coalbed methane potential. Consequently, the State of Alaska has taken the lead in putting an evaluation program together. The purpose of today's meeting is to bring together interested parties to help fund, design, and participate in a program intended to define this resource."-- from second leaf in source.

Using data from wellbores containing coal, together with experience obtained from studies in other basis, this study provides 1) a defined set of key geological criteria necessary for successful coalbed methane generation, retention and production; 2) a critical review of the possible geological and operational reasons for the outcome of various exploration area projects; 3) recommendations for the areas that offer the greatest potential for economic coalbed methane accumulations."--Abstract.
