Book excerpt: The objectives of this program were to characterize thirteen candidate hydraulic fluids for flammability, miscibility, elastomer compatibility and steel-on-steel wear, to determine the feasibility of directly substituting a less flammable fluid for the MIL-H-5606 fluid currently used in most military aircraft. Evaluation in a pump test loop has been performed on MIL-H-5606B and on two of the candidate fluids. No completely nonflammable fluid is compatible with MIL-H-5606 fluid or Buna N elastomers. Three of the thirteen fluids are recommended for further consideration: Oronite 8515, Esso 3158, and Dow Corning XF-1-0302. Oronite 8515 shows some improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and would not require operational temperature limitations if used as a replacement fluid. Reduced lubricity of highly loaded hydraulic system components (as compared to MIL-H-5606 fluid) is indicated however, by the performance of Oronite 8515 in a pump test loop. Some improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and Oronite 8515 is shown by Esso 3158. The greater viscosity and higher pour point of the latter fluid would impose some operational temperature limitations on MIL-H-5606 fluid hydraulic systems. Dow Corning XF-1-0302 fluid shows marked improvement in fire resistance over MIL-H-5606B and is compatible with Buna N elastomers. Pump testing of this fluid is recommended to provide complete evaluation data. (Author).

The vulnerability of seven structural modifications of simulated hydraulic reservoirs containing MIL-H-5606B fluid were evaluated and compared with conventional aluminum reservoirs. Two of the configurations warrant further design optimization studies. These are (1) molded-laminated-rubber construction over aluminum, and (2) glass filament-wound construction with a sheet rubber stock overwrap.

Book excerpt: Using NRL's mist flammability test apparatus, several commercial samples of 40% water-in-oil emulsion (fire-resistant hydraulic fluids) were screened for fire resistency. For comparison purposes, two other commercial fire-resistant hydraulic fluids were screened viz., a water-glycol solution and a phosphate ester. The Navy's currently used petroleum-type hydraulic fluid, 2190-TEP, was employed as the reference fluid. At the most severe conditions investigated (i.e., spray disk tangential velocity of 67.8 m/s, and fluid flow rate of 850 ml/min), none of the fire-resistant hydraulic fluids exhibited ignition leading to propagation in the presence of the propane test flame, indicating fire resistancy under these conditions. Under identical operating conditions, 2190-TEP exhibited gross ignition with propagation of flame ranging from 180 deg to 360 deg around the spinning disk, indicating it to be a potential fire hazard. The physical and chemical characteristics of the 40% water-in-oil emulsions suggest that this class of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids may be suitable replacement candidates for 2190-TEP.

This need includes synthetic hydraulic fluids and lubricants as replacements for conventional products used in tanks, helicopters and Naval surface ships. Cyclic phosphazene fluids synthesized at AMMRC, may satisfy these stringent requirements. Evaluation of these fluids is being conducted at the David Taylor Naval Ship R & D Center as part of a program to find replacement for fluids such as triarylphosphates covered under specifications MIL-H-19457C. Phosphazene fluids have potential for military applications requiring improved fire resistance in hydraulic systems, engines and transmission components. Further synthesis is planned which includes modification of the aryloxide/fluoroalkoxide ratio and investigation of other phenols. Large scale synthesis and hydraulic pump loop tests are being planned using the most promising candidates from this laboratory synthesis-characterization and fluid evaluation programs.

The information developed was used to determine the practicality of using MS-6 in aircraft 8000 psi lightweight hydraulic systems. The test results indicated that MS-6 can be used in 8000 psi systems, but further development effort is needed to improve pump performance and reduce the tendency of MS-6 to foam. The application study disclosed that no serious design problems would result from the higher viscosity, higher density, and lower bulk modulus of MS-6; weight and space penalties would be incurred, however. Book excerpt: During the development of the fire-resistant hydraulic fluids for DoD (Department of Defense) aircraft, candidate fluids were formulated and then characterized initially by various laboratory bench tests. Endurance pump tests were then conducted on the candidate fluids to validate their performance. Pump tests under accelerated conditions were conducted on three candidate fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and several candidate nonflammable hydraulic fluids, using pressure-compensated axial flow piston pumps and an instrumented, small-volume, closed-loop hydraulic test stand. Case-drain temperature and signal-noise on the pump outlet pressure and the case-drain flow provided better failure indicators than the case-drain flow. The fluids containing viscosity-index-improvers underwent large viscosity losses. No viscosity loss was observed for the fluids that did not contain the viscosity-index-improvers. Lower viscosity fluids performed as well as the higher viscosity fluids in these pump tests. However, the ball-bearing material and the heat treatment had a bigger impact on pump life. Use of an M-50 bearing in place of the AISI-52100 bearing doubled the pump life.

Hazards directly related to the M60A1 tank have been discussed. A systematic assessment of flammability modes and ignition sources is presented. Experimental results indicate that mist flammability is more related to exposure conditions than to hydraulic fluid classes. Pool burning has been shown to be a major hazard, and the higher flash point fluids have been shown to provide a substantial margin of safety relative to conventional petroleum-base fluids. Results of ballistic tests using 20 mm HEIT projectiles demonstrated residual burning on the backstop (analogous to pool burning) only when conventional petroleum-base fluids were evaluated, otherwise, only a transient mist fireball was observed.
