Book excerpt: The Low Level Wind shear Alert System (LLWAS) is an anemometer-based surface network used for detection of hazardous wind shear and acquisition of operational wind information in the airport terminal area. The quality of wind data provided by the LLWAS anemometers is important for the proper performance of the LLWAS wind shear detection algorithms. This report describes the development of an automated method for anemometer data quality analysis (DQA). This method identifies potential data quality problems through comparison of wind data from each sensor within a network to the mean wind speed and direction of the entire network. The design approach and implementation are described, and results from testing using data from the demonstration Phase III LLWAS network in Orlando, FL are reported. Potential improvements to the automated DQA algorithm are presented based on experience gained during analysis of the Orlando data. These recommended improvements are provided to assist future development and refinement of the DQA methodology to he performed by the FAA technical Center. Book excerpt: Research airspeed systems on three low-speed general aviation airplanes were calibrated by the trailing anemometer method. Each airplane was fitted with an NASA pitot-static pressure tube mounted on either a nose or wing boom. The uncalibrated airspeed systems contained residual static-pressure position errors which were too large for high-accuracy flight research applications. The trailing anemometer calibration was in agreement with the tower flyby calibration for the one aircraft for which the comparison was made. The continuous deceleration technique for the trailing anemometer method offers reduced test time with no appreciable loss of accuracy for airspeed systems with pitot-static system lag characteristics similar to those described.

Book excerpt: Performance tests of anemometers under icing and snow conditions were conducted during 1990-1991 on the test field at Rochester, MN and in icing chambers and wind tunnels at Sterling, VA. These tests were done for the FAA LLWAS program to test sensors for the next phase of LLWAS. Sensors from ten manufacturers were accepted into the test program from the respondents to the Commerce Business Daily. These sensors were required first to pass an icing chamber test in order to be field tested. The field tests lasted from November 1990 to July 1991. Afterwards, all sensors were sent to Sterling, VA for wind tunnel tests in September 1991. All units from the eight manufacturers that passed the icing chamber test were in the field test. A propeller/vane sensor that failed the icing chamber test was put in the field as a reference. All the units that passed were not affected by icing during the field test although a mechanical unit was affected by snow during one event. The propeller/vane was affected by icing during one event. Wind tunnel tests were done to check starting thresholds and calibration anomalies found in the field. It was concluded that there is no one winning technology that could be found from the tests ...
