Book excerpt: This project focuses on the second construction phase of the Minnesota Road Research facility (Mn/ROAD) and evaluates three typical, locally available, surfacing aggregates along with a rollover section from the initial phase for performance. The project results indicate that the adsorption test did not predict the performance of the sections in this experiment. All of the aggregates were characterized as marginal in terms of moisture and frost susceptibility. The project also compared freezing and thawing rates on the aggregate sections to nearby hot mix asphalt (HMA) sections.

Book excerpt: This study utilized I DOT mechanistic-empirical (M-E) procedures and Mn/ROAD low-volume road (LVR) data and information to verify/refine/modify analysis and design concepts and procedures for L VR flexible pavements. The Mn/ROAD L VR flexible pavements include conventional flexible, full-depth asphalt, surface-treatment and aggregate-surface sections. Laboratory test results, field distress measurements, and FWD test data were used to study the affect of granular material quality on pavement performance and deflection response. The results from the rapid shear tests, permanent deformation tests and field rutting measurements show that granular material rutting potential can be characterized by a rapid shear triaxial test at 15-psi confining pressure. For conventional flexible pavements, granular material quality did not affect the pavement deflection response, but material quality effects were significant for aggregate-surface and surface-treatment pavements. ILLI-PAVE predicted pavement responses were fairly accurate for sections with thicker asphalt concrete surfaces. The FWD deflection basin parameter AUPP (Area Under Pavement Profile) can be used to predict the strains at the bottom of AC layer. Effect of subgrade type on pavement response and performance was studied. Sandy subgrades showed little or no change in pavement structural response due to spring-thaw effects. For the cohesive subgrade sections, moisture changes and spring-thaw effects increased surface deflections. The study showed that the lOOT LVR flexible pavement mechanistic-empirical design concepts and procedures are valid and adequate.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the construction and early performance assessment of three composite (new, multi-layer, construction) test cells at the MnROAD: HMA over a recycled aggregate concrete; diamond grind concrete over recycled aggregate concrete; and exposed aggregate concrete over a low cost concrete. The compilation of this report is strictly a MnDOT activity that documents construction and instrumentation of concrete cells at our MnROAD facility and should not be misconstrued for a SHRP 2 activity. Strength, on board sound intensity, sound absorption, friction, texture and international roughness index were tested to better understand the performance of these, pavement types. Results suggest that the exposed aggregate concrete surface does not provide significant noise reduction. Exposed aggregate surfacing can provide more than adequate friction for skid resistance and safety. Overall, however, these two lift concrete pavements proved to address issues such as high cost of virgin aggregates and high trucking costs for areas that don't have quality aggregates to use. Continued monitoring of these test cells will help develop the extensive understanding of composite pavements needed for effective design and accurate service life models.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book excerpt: Study goals included: 1) identify mechanisms causing premature failure in Minnesota concrete pavements; 2) evaluate the accuracy of existing tests of aggregate freeze-thaw durability using Minnesota aggregate sources and pavement performance records; 3) develop a new methodology for quickly and reliably assessing aggregate freeze-thaw durability; and 4) evaluate techniques for mitigating D-cracking. Research results indicate that the poor durability performance of some Minnesota PCC pavement sections can often be attributed to aggregate freeze-thaw damage. However, secondary mineralization, embedded shale deposits, poor mix design and alkali-aggregate reactions were also identified as problems. Petrographic examination can help to differentiate between these failure mechanisms. A reliable and universal method for quickly identifying D-cracking aggregate particles was not identified. A test protocol was developed for improved aggregate durability evaluation. It includes several tests which are selected for use based on aggregate geological origin and composition and the results of previous tests. Further validation of the proposed test protocol is recommended. Several techniques appear to be effective in improving the freeze-thaw durability of concrete prepared using marginally durable aggregate: mix design modifications, reductions in aggregate top size, and the blending of durable and nondurable aggregates. Some chemical treatments showed promise, but may not be economical.

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Book excerpt: Minnesota has a large network of aggregate roads. The majority of the system is maintained by counties and townships. Some of the aggregate roads need to be upgraded with a sealed surface for dust control or to provide a smoother driving experience, as well as for local economic development. Local road officials are often faced with the responsibility of upgrading the roads with a limited budget. Light surface treatments (LSTs) are considered an economical alternative to the conventional upgrade approaches using hot-mixasphalt (HMA) or concrete pavements. The currently used methods in Minnesota for the structural design of LSTs for aggregate roads were originally developed for structural design of flexible pavements. This research evaluated the design methods that can be used to design LSTs for aggregate roads. The methods evaluated include the MnDOT granular equivalent (GE) method and the MnDOT mechanistic-empirical method (MnPave design software), which are used in Minnesota, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) flexible pavement design method and South Dakota aggregate road design method, which are practiced in other places in the United States. The results include a discussion of the applicable situations for each method. The research team also conducted a survey that was distributed to the county engineers in Minnesota to document their experiences with LSTs. Recommendations for improving the current design methods when applied to LSTs on aggregate roads are suggested based on the survey results.
