Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dance/movement therapy (DMT) clinical method is proposed to address treatment goals and objectives of individuals suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). There is a need for more clearly outlined DMT interventions with the TBI population in the published literature. Viewpoints is an acting and choreography approach that could be a useful tool in DMT. It provides an organized structure for interventions that could address specific deficits of brain injury within the cognitive, physical, and psychosocial sequelae. Patients suffering from a TBI or stroke often lose cognitive awareness and sense-perception. These individuals must be reoriented to time and space in order for the brain to heal and allow for a successful recovery in the rehabilitation process. Viewpoints expands awareness and ways of moving and relating to the self, others, and the environment through the exploration of time and space elements. Clinical vignettes with TBI and stroke patients are included to illustrate technical choices of Viewpoints structure and process within the DMT session. Viewpoints in DMT attempts to enhance body and spatial awareness, and expand movement repertoire as well as creative decision-making and expression. Recommendations for future clinical practice, research and adaptations for other therapeutic contexts are considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a timely, detailed, and comprehensive synopsis of dance/movement therapy (DMT) in the treatment of psychological trauma. Along with the foundational concepts of DMT, tied to traditional trauma theory and a neurobiological framework, contributions contain rich clinical examples that illustrate the use of dance, creative movement, and body awareness with a wide variety of populations including survivors of sex trafficking, military veterans, refugees, those with multigenerational trauma, and others. Chapters emphasize the underlying influences of power, privilege, and oppression on trauma, prompting practitioners to consider and understand the dynamics of sociocultural contexts and engage in continuous self-reflection. Featuring multiple perspectives, as well as cultural and contextual considerations, this book provides direct takeaways for clinicians and professionals and concludes with a roadmap for the trajectory of trauma-informed, healing-centered DMT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance/Movement Therapists in Action fosters awareness of the living body, honors diverse ways of working, and leads toward creative expression and integration. This edited text, written by authors with exemplary credentials, spans and illuminates a breadth of investigative inquiry approaches and models to all students, clinicians, and researchers interested in dance/movement therapy (DMT) research. The text highlights two basic research frameworks-quantitative (objective) and qualitative (interpretative)-including their underlying philosophic and theoretical tenets. The authors' goal has been to create a comprehensible, accessible book that is readable and engaging: one that contains accepted research protocols in conjunction with practical information written in "nontechnical" terms. Many examples are incorporated throughout the text to clarify and amplify each of the various research options. A spectrum of research alternatives are presented that can inform clinical practice, inspire clinicians and students, and guide further research inquiry. These chapters hold a wealth of information and examples that will be of particular use and interest to clinicians and were conceived and written with practitioners in mind-for example, one featuring the use of movement observation scales for DMT research and clinical practice, and one on using research results to inform clinical practice. A completely new chapter on embodied descriptive and interpretive methods in DMT research also has been added. This volume will afford dance/movement therapists the tools to conduct research related to both clinical practice and academic inquiry.

Book excerpt: This book covers a broad spectrum of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices employed in pediatric oncology worldwide, with a special focus on the methods widely used in Western countries. It is a scientifically based, practice-oriented handbook that will meet the needs of pediatric oncologists working in medical practices and hospitals. An introductory section includes a comparative overview of current CAM use in pediatric oncology in different countries. Commonly used CAM methods are then discussed in a series of chapters that provide a theoretical description of the method in question, followed by more practically oriented information, including scientific data if applicable. Special attention is paid to the issue of how to integrate each method into conventional pediatric oncology. The closing parts of the book consider aspects of CAM requiring further development, such as institutional research, and provide a road map on establishing integrative pediatric oncology worldwide.

Book excerpt: ABLE, an informed practice approach and application for dance/movement therapy in the medical rehabilitation setting, was developed during a six and a half month internship at a medical rehabilitation hospital in Philadelphia, PA. This approach focuses on the use of adaptive tools and ambulatory equipment to promote creative movement, self-expression, and increased coping skills for individuals in this environment. Integrative techniques were explored and applied during dance/movement therapy sessions, as well as physical and occupational therapy co-treatments, while working with individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke. Current literature was reviewed on relevant topics such as: disability models, grief and loss, physical outcomes, and adaptive equipment. Three case vignettes were included to demonstrate several techniques used throughout the process. The project highlights a need for further education and research in this area and provides suggestion for future application. Keywords: Dance/movement therapy, adaptive equipment, chronic sorrow, ambiguous loss, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke.

Book excerpt: Musical improvisation is an increasingly recognised rehabilitative therapy for people who have experienced traumatic brain injury initially thought to be `unreachable' or `non-responsive'. Music Therapy and Traumatic Brain Injury demonstrates how music therapy can be used to attend to the holistic, rather than purely functional, needs of people affected by severe head trauma. Divided into three parts, the first section provides an introduction to the effects brain injury has on a person's livelihood. The second is a comprehensive review of available literature on the use of music therapy in the neurorehabilitative setting. The final section examines three case studies designed according to `therapeutic narrative analysis', an adaptive research method that uses interviewing and video, which focuses on the unique relationship between the professional and the patient. This book will give clinicians key notes for practice and a vision of the integral role music therapy can have in the successful rehabilitation from brain injury.

Book excerpt: Presenting dance/movement therapy (DMT) as a viable and valuable psychosocial support service for those with a medical illness, Sharon W. Goodill shows how working creatively with the mind/body connection can encourage and enhance the healing process. This book represents the first attempt to compile, synthesize, and publish the work that has been done over recent years in medical DMT. The emerging application of medical DMT is grounded within the context of established viewpoints and theories, such as arts therapies, health psychology and scientific perspectives. As well as examining its theoretical foundations, the author offers real-life examples of medical DMT working with people of different ages with different medical conditions. This comprehensive book provides a firm foundation for exploration and practice in medical DMT, including recommendations for professional preparation, research and program development. Interviews with dance/movement therapists bring fresh and exciting perspectives to the field and these and the author's testimonies point to the possible future applications of medical DMT. With an increasing number of professional dance/movement therapists working with the medically ill and their families, this is a timely and well-grounded look at an exciting new discipline. It is recommended reading for DMT students and professionals, complementary therapists, and all those with an interest in the healing potential of working innovatively with the mind and body.
