Book excerpt: L'objectif principal de cette étude est de savoir si les médecins de l'enfant sont sensibilisés et pertinents dans le dépistage des malocclusions et dysmorphoses maxillo-faciales. L'objectif secondaire est de savoir s'ils souhaiteraient disposer d'un outil de dépistage qui leur permettrait de repérer objectivement les indications de traitement. Une enquête sous forme d'un questionnaire a été réalisée auprès de 112 médecins à exercice pédiatrique (pédiatres, médecins scolaires et médecins de PMI). 97 % des médecins interrogés ont conscience de l'impact des malocclusions et dysmorphoses sur la santé de l'enfant. Concernant leur pratique, les médecins sont plus sensibilisés à l'hygiène bucco-dentaire qu'à la dysmorphie maxillo-faciale ; 87 % recherchent la présence de lésions carieuses de manière régulière ou systématique, alors que seuls 14 % explorent systématiquement les trois volets du dépistage orthodontique que sont la recherche de dysmorphoses, d'anomalies dentaires et de malocclusions. Aussi, 60 % des participants ne se déclarent pas à l'aise avec ces examens cliniques, et seuls 12 % ont bénéficié d'une formation en orthodontie. Enfin, plus de 90 % des médecins de l'enquête seraient intéressés à la fois par une formation sur le dépistage des anomalies orthodontiques, et par un indicateur qui serait prédictif de la présence d'une dysmorphose. Notre étude repère bien les limites des médecins en matière de dépistage orthodontique, faute de formation. Plus largement, notre travail met en exergue une lacune importante dans notre système de dépistage, oulevant ainsi tant la négligence des parents, qu'un certain flou dans l'attribution des rôles au niveau des différents professionnels de santé, qu'ils soient chirurgiens-dentistes ou médecins à exercice pédiatrique. Une réflexion est à mener : Faut-il améliorer la formation des médecins et développer les outils nécessaires pour mieux appréhender ce dépistage ? Ou bien faut-il rendre réellement obligatoire la consultation chez le chirurgien-dentiste ?

La question sous-jacente est de savoir si tous les enfants devant bénéficier de ces traitements sont correctement orientés. Le rôle de dépistage du praticien omnipraticien est donc crucial pour ces jeunes patients.

What were the reasons for publishing a book on stance and motion ? The interest aroused in the participants by each others contributions was not a sufficiently decisive argument. It was feit, however, that a large proportion of the orginal material presented at the meeting, especially in the field of posture and locomotion but also on other aspects covered by the book could be presented in a summarized form which should appeal to a larger audience because the facts and hypotheses they contained especially those from the Soviet participants, were not very familiar among international circles, and that many scientists would appreciate having a single volume containing a survey ofthe current state of research in this field. This was also the opinion of Plenum Press, who agreed to publish the book. Each participant at the meeting submitted a paper which was examined by two referees before being accepted.
