La composante animale des systèmes d'élevage peut dans ce contexte représenter un levier d'adaptation aux perturbations de l'environnement et contribuer à la pérennité des systèmes. Ainsi, produire des connaissances qui permettront de sélectionner des animaux robustes c'est-à-dire capables de se maintenir et de maintenir leurs performances dans un environnement changeant est actuellement un objectif prioritaire de la recherche en zootechnie. Peu de méthodes d'évaluation scientifique de la robustesse des animaux d'élevage ont été développées, et la seule méthode opérationnelle à ce jour, basée sur l'étude statique d'une seule fonction (l'approche norme de réaction) est remise en question. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer un cadre d'évaluation opérationnel de la robustesse, c'est-à-dire utilisable en élevage. Dans ce but, nous nous sommes focalisés sur le modèle vache laitière et avons mené deux démarches complémentaires, l'une basée sur l'analyse de données issues de fermes expérimentales de l'INRA et visant à évaluer les aptitudes biologiques des vaches à gérer les compromis (trade-offs) entre fonctions biologiques (lactation, reproduction et survie) en environnement stable puis perturbé. La seconde démarche est basée sur des enquêtes auprès d'éleveurs laitiers en vue de caractériser les stratégies de conduite (objectifs et seuils de performances) qui relèvent de la recherche d'adéquation animal-système et contribue à la robustesse des animaux. Enfin un travail de synthèse a permis d'intégrer les contributions respectives des deux approches dans la conception du cadre d'évaluation de la robustesse, ceci afin qu'il puisse être manipulable par l'ensemble des acteurs de la recherche, du terrain et du développement. Ce cadre opérationnel propose que la robustesse des vaches laitières soit évaluée en confrontant les aptitudes biologiques des animaux exprimées dans un environnement donné, aux stratégies de conduite des éleveurs. Pour ce faire, il convient 1/ de caractériser les trajectoires productives des vaches laitières sur la base de l'expression des compromis entre fonctions biologiques en situation stable et perturbée, 2/ de les confronter aux objectifs et les seuils de performances des éleveurs, 3/ d'analyser l'adéquation entre les profils de performances exprimés par l'animal et les profils de priorisation des performances des éleveurs, 4/ de prendre en compte les complémentarités entre animaux pour passer au niveau troupeau. Des indicateurs de fitness des animaux (longévité, nombre de descendants dans le troupeau) permettent de valider cette analyse.

Book excerpt: L'acidose latente du rumen de la vache laitière engendre des pertes de production (production laitière, troubles de la reproduction, boiteries, etc.) et induit des coûts de prévention et de traitement. Il n'existe pourtant aucune démarche diagnostique standardisée qui permette de confirmer ou d'infirmer avec certitude une suspicion d'acidose latente. Nous avons enquêté dans cinquante-deux élevages laitiers de Bretagne et des départements limitrophes afin d'évaluer l'intérêt de différents outils diagnostiques, selon le principe d'une étude "cas / témoins". Ces élevages avaient été sélectionnés à partir d'observations à l'abattoir de panses de vaches issues de divers élevages. Vingt-six élevages étaient sélectionnés avec des panses noires et étaient considérés comme ayant a priori un problème d'acidose, vingt-six autres élevages sélectionnés avec des panses claires, étaient considérés comme n'ayant a priori pas de problème d'acidose. Nous avons recherché dans ces élevages les marqueurs de l'acidose latente, décrits dans la bibliographie: données zootechniques (production laitière, composition du lait), observations des animaux (rumination, bouses) et mesures de pH (liquide ruminal, urine). Aucune corrélation entre les paramètres n'a pu être établie, excepté entre le pH ruminal et le niveau de production laitière du troupeau. Nous n'avons observé que très peu de pH bas (moins de 2% de pH inférieur à 5,5). Le niveau de production laitière est donc un fort facteur de risque d'acidose mais aucun paramètre pris seul ne peut être considéré comme un critère de référence pour le diagnostic de l'acidose latente, il serait donc nécessaire d'en combiner plusieurs.

Book excerpt: The INRA Feeding System for Ruminants has been renewed to better address emerging challenges for animal nutrition: prevision of productive responses, product quality, animal health and emissions to the environment, in a larger extent of breeding contexts. The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.

In some countries, for example the UK, Australia and New Zealand, animal products from grassland make a greater contribution to the value of agricultural production than does any other crop. Yet research being undertaken to further· our understanding of the factors affecting the growth and productivity of grasslands has trailed in the shadow of the determined efforts made to improve our knowledge of cereals and, to a somewhat lesser extent, legumes. However, in spite of its low profile, grassland research has resulted in considerable advances in our knowledge in the last 20 years, and we feel that this book provides a timely opportunity to bring together some of this work in a review of what is primarily the ecophysiology of the temperate grass crop.
