Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were to evaluate the biomass of Lake Saint-Pierre submerged aquatic plants, both at the peak of the seasonal biomass and during the senescence period, and to estimate the total content of trace metals contained in the above-ground portion of the vegetation. The biomass of the submerged aquatic plants was determined at 27-40 stations in August and October 1990; multispectral remote sensing data (MEIS-II) were used to extrapolate from these point biomass estimates (g/m2) to the entire lake area (Lavoie et al., 1991). Samples of the aquatic plant community were also collected for metal analysis at 17 stations, using appropriate geostatistical techniques. Submerged macrophytes of Lake Saint-Pierre, particularly Vallisneria americana (wild celery), show potential as bioindicators of trace metals, reflecting spatial variations in environmental contamination; metal present in the macrophyte biomass are potentially transferable through the food chain to higher organisms.

Book excerpt: Invasive species have come to dominate 3% of the Earth’s ice-free surface, constituting one of the most serious ecological and economic threats of the new millennium, and freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable. This book examines the identity, distribution, and impact of freshwater non-indigenous species and the dynamics of their invasion. It focuses on old and new invaders and provides a starting point for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecosystems present a great diversity worldwide and use various functionalities according to ecologic regions. In this new context of variability and climatic changes, these ecosystems undergo notable modifications amplified by domestic uses of which it was subjected to. Indeed the ecosystems render diverse services to humanity from their composition and structure but the tolerable levels are unknown. The preservation of these ecosystemic services needs a clear understanding of their complexity. The role of research is not only to characterise the ecosystems but also to clearly define the tolerable usage levels. Their characterisation proves to be important not only for the local populations that use it but also for the conservation of biodiversity. Hence, the measurement, management and protection of ecosystems need innovative and diverse methods. For all these reasons, the aim of this book is to bring out a general view on the function of ecosystems, modelling, sampling strategies, invading species, the response of organisms to modifications, the carbon dynamics, the mathematical models and theories that can be applied in diverse conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard C. Beadle In contrast to the more sta bie oceans, inland waters are, on the geological time scale, short-lived and are subject to great fluctuations in chemical composition and physical features. Very few lakes and rivers have existed continuously for more than a million years, and the life of the majority is to be measured in thousands or less. Earth movements, erosion and long-term climatic changes in the past have caused many of them to appear and disappear. No wonder then that most freshwater organism are especially adapted to great changes and many even to temporary extinction of their environment. Recent studies of residual sediments from existing and extinct lakes in tropical Africa have told us much about their age and the past history of their faunas and floras, from which we may deduce something about the climate and the conditions in the water in the past. The forces that have formed and moulded the African Great Lakes have been catastrophic in their violence and effects. They are not yet finished, but the present rate of change is, in human terms, too slow for direct observation of the ecological effects. The large man-made lakes are providing very good opportunities for studying the chemi cal and biological consequences of the initial filling but, once filled, they are artificially protected against major fluctuations.

They stabilize soil crust through colonization of bare grounds and rocks; they are essential in nutrient recycling, biomass production, and carbon fixing; they control water through an effective retention mechanism; and they have economic value as peat for fuel, horticulture, oil absorption, and as sources of a wide variety of chemical compounds. Bryophytes have long been used for medicinal purposes and provide a food source for reindeer, geese, ducks, sheep, musk-ox, lemmings, and other rodents. Threats include deforestation, cultivation of forests, reclamation of land, urbanization, roads, dam-building, mining, drainage of wetlands and over-grazing. This plan reviews the situation worldwide and proposes a variety of initiatives. It is aimed at those who work with and care about nature conservation, including governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as politicians and the general interested public.
