Over the last decade, the UK’s grocery retailing landscape has transformed radically, especially emergence of the Germany and Scandinavia deep discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl in early 1990s. Hard discount retailer have very distinctive approach than UK’s traditional grocery retail such as Tesco, Sainsbury, Walmart-Asda and Morrison and were lead onto UK by these Traditional retailer which enjoyed high profit margins at the time and they recognised the Gap in the market in terms price and spatial gap in terms of the most deprive area in UK’s towns and cities. By 2015, Germany discount retails have grown record level which followed a period of gradual increase number of store and most favourable trading characteristics even given recession and global financial crises between 2007 and 2009 (Thompson et al., 2010). Having reached record sales, by end of 2014, Aldi and Lidl’s sales have grown by 22.6% and 15.1% and 4.8% and 3.6% market share respectively. On the other side, big four traditional retail Tesco lost sales 1.2%, J Sainsbury 0.7% and Asda and Morrison both 1.6% as well as 1.2% market share in combine (FT, 2015:1). The success of German discount retails has become main concern in UK’s traditional retails. Aim of this paper is to investigation the impact of discount retailers on traditional retailers in UK because German discounters not only direct impact on traditional retailers’ market share, also put pressure on increasing operational efficiency and or decreasing prices (Harvard Business Review, 2006 and van Heerde et al. 2008) which lead this paper’s second aim to analyse should existing traditional retailers develop new flexible business model like Walmart (Jia, 2007). Having successful business strategy, it still begs a question what is the future of this German discounter, third aim of this research paper is to investigate can they (German discounter) be able to beat big four UK’s traditional retailers like what Walmart did in US (Jia, 2007) and Ryanair did British airways (Ruddick, 2014). Due to having time and words limitation, this paper will only focus Tesco in terms of UK’s traditional retailer and German discounter Aldi.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Socio-Economic Conditions by : Gianni Betti
Download or read book Analysis of Socio-Economic Conditions written by Gianni Betti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcasing fuzzy set theory, this book highlights the enormous potential of fuzzy logic in helping to analyse the complexity of a wide range of socio-economic patterns and behaviour. The contributions to this volume explore the most up-to-date fuzzy-set methods for the measurement of socio-economic phenomena in a multidimensional and/or dynamic perspective. Thus far, fuzzy-set theory has primarily been utilised in the social sciences in the field of poverty measurement. These chapters examine the latest work in this area, while also exploring further applications including social exclusion, the labour market, educational mismatch, sustainability, quality of life and violence against women. The authors demonstrate that real-world situations are often characterised by imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness, which cannot be properly described by the classical set theory which uses a simple true–false binary logic. By contrast, fuzzy-set theory has been shown to be a powerful tool for describing the multidimensionality and complexity of social phenomena. This book will be of significant interest to economists, statisticians and sociologists utilising quantitative methods to explore socio-economic phenomena.
Book Synopsis Ex Post Economic Evaluation of Competition Policy by : Fabienne Ilzkovitz
Download or read book Ex Post Economic Evaluation of Competition Policy written by Fabienne Ilzkovitz and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition authorities are increasingly interested in understanding the impact of their activities on markets and consumers. The goal is to improve competition policy rules and decision-making practices and to get robust evidence on the benefits of competition and competition policy for society as a whole. Discussions with competition authorities, practitioners and academics have shown the need to take stock of the experience gained in this field by the European Commission and to present it in an easily accessible way. The studies collected in this volume – prepared by senior Commission officials and competition policy experts – range from the ex post evaluation of specific policy interventions to the assessment of the broader impact of competition policy. The issues and topics examined include the following: objectives and scope of evaluations by the European Commission; description of counterfactual evaluation techniques used; conditions for a successful ex post evaluation of a competition policy intervention; a wide selection of individual cases covering a variety of economic sectors; applications in merger control, antitrust and State aid; direct benefits of competition policy interventions for consumers; deterrent effects of such interventions on market participants; and macroeconomic outcomes in terms of job creation, productivity and GDP growth. This matchless book assembles within a single volume all that is needed for competition policy analysts and practitioners to undertake ex post economic evaluations. While its collection of state-of-the-art ex post evaluation studies has a clear value for competition authorities, it is sure to be welcomed as well by competition law practitioners in the private sector, who will greatly appreciate the effort made to cast a critical eye on decisions taken in the past. Moreover, it allows for addressing some of the new challenges facing competition policymakers. Fabienne Ilzkovitz is Principal Advisor responsible for the economic evaluation of competition policy within the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission, and since 2014, she has coordinated various ex post evaluation projects in the Directorate-General. She is also Associate Professor of Economics in the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Adriaan Dierx is Senior Expert on ex post economic evaluation within the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission. He has managed a number of studies aimed at assessing the economic impact of the European Commission’s competition policy interventions.
