The current study examined the effectiveness of commercially made video models with three individuals with ASD at an Early Intensive Behavior Intervention center. The dependent measure of this study was the percentage of social skills each participant independently imitated from a video model. A multiple-probe-across-participants design was used. Of the three participants, only one demonstrated accurate imitation of the social skill modeled. The other two participants never engaged in the skill.

Because of the increasing prevalence of autism, there is an increased need for social skills interventions, especially those that are portable and efficient (Stoneman, 2008). Because the primary education of children with ASD occurs in the school system, it is important that feasible, effective interventions be identified for use in the schools. One promising area of research is video modeling. Video modeling is based on the principles of social learning theory, where individuals watch others perform a skill and demonstrate the same skill. To examine possible means to improve the portability, utility, and efficiency of video modeling, this research investigates two variables: the effectiveness of commercially available video modeling materials and the potential for implementation of video modeling as a group intervention. Specifically, the present study assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of the Model Me Conversation Cues(TM) DVD presented both individually and in groups. Implications for future interventions for individuals with ASD are discussed.

For a second participant, IST was effective for skill acquisition and maintenance. Finally, a modified IST procedure was effective for a third participant when implemented by a trainer but not when implemented by his mother.

This study examined the effectiveness of a video modeling intervention on the acquisition of leisure skills in adolescents with ASD. A non-concurrent multiple-probe across participants design (Horner & Baer, 1978) was used to represent and evaluate the effectiveness of the video modeling intervention. Two of the participants demonstrated success in mastering the leisure skill that they had selected to learn. The third participant, did not demonstrate mastery of the leisure skill, but demonstrated an overall improvement in the accuracy of steps completed in the leisure skill. All of the participants showed improvement across four generalization probes that took place in novel settings throughout the intervention phase of the study.

Book excerpt: Video modeling has been used effectively to teach a variety of skills to children with autism. This body of literature is characterized by a variety of procedural variations including the characteristics of the video model (e.g., self vs. other, adult vs. peer). Traditionaly, most video models have been filmed using third person perspective (i.e., scene models), where the viewer is watching the actor perform in a scene. Recently, studies have successfully incorporated the use of first person perspective into video models (i.e., point of view models), where the view is directly from the actor's point of view. Currently, no studies have directly compared the effects of camera angle on learning when video models are used as teaching tools. Six boys with autism ages 4-8 years learned yoked pairs of tasks, with one task assigned to each type of modeling condition. The effects were evaluated using an adapted alternating treatments design that allowed for a direct comparison between conditions with task difficulty held constant. Few differences in rate of acquisition and attention to the model were observed. Video modeling was not always successful as a teaching tool for targeted tasks. Supplemental teaching strategies (e.g., in vivo modeling with error correction) were employed when video modeling was ineffective for one or both tasks. This study provides evidence that camera angle does not generally have an effect on video modeling effectiveness. It also provides furhter evidence that video modeling may not always be an effective teaching tool for all children with autism.

The videos were uploaded to Box, an app that enabled the participants to watch their respective videos on a smartphone prior to attempting a task. The effectiveness of the video self-monitoring intervention was evaluated using a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Results indicated the participants performed job-related skills at higher levels after video-self modeling was presented. Social validity data indicated that video self-modeling was an effective, appropriate, and feasible method of teaching job-related skills in vocational settings.

Additionally, this study compared the effectiveness and efficiency of using a peer video model to a teacher video model to teach functional play skills and decrease problem behavior. Due to ineffective results, the researcher substituted video modeling with video prompting using total task probe with blinding. Results suggest that video prompting is a viable instructional approach to teach functional play skills and decrease problem behavior. Additionally, there was not a significant difference between the peer video model and teacher video model.

Book excerpt: The newly adopted Every Student Succeeds Act (Lam, Mercer, Podolsky, & Darling-Hammond, 2016) requires that school districts use evidence-based practices for student outcomes. Evidence-based practices are based on supported research that are specific to different fields within education (e.g., physical education) and have also reported evidence of increased positive behaviors with specific groups of students (e.g., children with autism spectrum disorder [ASD]). The development of fundamental motor skills in children with ASD is dependent on teachers using evidence-based practices (e.g., picture task cards [PTC], video modeling). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of three types of motor performance instructional strategies (i.e., PTCs, ExerciseBuddy application [EB App], combination) on teaching motor performance to children with ASD. Six children (CA = 5 to 9 years) were purposively selected with ASD. A randomized alternating-treatment design with no baseline was conducted 3 days a week, for 15 min, for 4 consecutive weeks. To determine the raw score for each participant, the investigator and two research assistants evaluated the performance criteria of the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (Ulrich, 2018) and established an inter-rater reliability score of 88% (range = 73 to 97%). Based on visual analysis of the data, the average of overlapping data between protocol conditions across participants approached 100%. Within the limitations of this investigation, it was concluded that there was no functional relation between PTCs, EB App, or combination instructional protocols during motor performance for children with ASD.

VSM is a teaching method in which an individual views a video clip, watching herself/himself engaging in a task (behavior). This is meant to build familiarity with the task, enhancing the individual's ability to perform it independently. By applying this method to functional life skills, which are necessary for high school students with ASD, it may be possible to help them build the skills necessary to live independently. The current study utilized a non-concurrent multiple baseline across behaviors research design, which was implemented to answer the research questions: (1) What are the effects of VSM on functional life skills for high school students with ASD in a home setting? (2) Once acquired, are functional life skills maintained over a period of time? (3) Does VSM provoke self-efficacy beliefs in high school students with ASD? The study was guided by self-efficacy theory. Self-efficacy refers to a person's self-belief that she/he is capable of completing a task. With this in mind, it is hypothesized that by using VSM as a teaching method, participants will learn functional life skills, maintain these skills over time, and report higher levels of self-efficacy beliefs post-intervention. Visual analyses were utilized to analyze and interpret study results. Visual analyses consisted of analyzing any changes in variability, level, and trend of each phase by implementing a line graph. Reliability was assessed through Inter-observer Agreement (IOA). Procedural integrity was verified for procedures implemented in phases of the study. Results from visual analyses from the study suggest VSM is an effective teaching method for adolescents with ASD in a home setting. Additionally, all participants maintained their acquired functional life skills post one week, and post two weeks following the end of VSM phase. Descriptive statistics was applied to evaluate pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for participants. Specifically, the total, mean total, and median are reported. The study found that VSM is effective for helping high school students with ASD develop and maintain functional life skills. Results revealed no significant changes occurred between pre and post assessment of self-efficacy beliefs for all participants. Participants and their mothers reported overall positive perceptions of social validity. Implications for practice and theory are discussed, as well as directions for future research.
