Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality circles (QCs) are small volunteer groups of workers who meet weekly with a trained leader operating to a strict code of conduct. They use techniques of brainstorming, cause and effect classification, pareto analysis, and presentation to consider work-related problems and recommend solutions to management. QCs have been tried in educational institutions in North America. Two QC-related experiments in the United Kingdom have distinct differences from the pure model. Accrington and Rossendale College was suffering problems of low morale in a period of rapid change, when QCs offered an opportunity to develop participation. A research project introduced the program to staff at a series of meetings and canvassed their views. Following training of volunteers, four QCs formed among library, technician, administrative, and Business and Management Studies Department teaching staff. Problems considered included overdue library books, insurance, external appearance of the college, and storage space. An evaluation identified a particularly important benefit: the staff development opportunity for support staff. QCs proved valuable in avoiding rushed decision making. The techniques themselves were helpful in other settings. Problems were opposition from middle managers who discouraged staff attendance and opposition from lecturing staff who saw circles as one change too many. (Appendixes include 45 references and a case study of one QC's solution to a problem.) (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational institutions have not escaped the influence of the quality movement, and the FE sector in particular is now being actively encouraged to introduce the BSI's quality assurance standard BS5750. Universities and schools are also attracted by a standard which should improve, if not quality itself, then the management of quality. This book presents an overview of the pitfalls and problems of implementing quality standards in education. It explores theoretical issues, such as the relationship between the customer and academic culture. It also has a strong practical theme, looking at the advantages and disadvantages of quality systems, case studies of attempts at implementation and proposals for future developments across the education sector as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains what Students' Quality Circles (SQC) are, how they function, key constraints and issues in implementation, and possible solutions to make it a valuable co-curricular activity. It showcases how Quality Control Circle (QCC) is reengineered with the sole purpose of prosocial personality development of students at their early age. It is a research outcome which depicts the direction of the education system toward character building rather than only developing knowledge and skills. The logical sequence of presentation of the book is ‘why,’ ‘what,’ and toward the end, ‘how’ SQC in education. The book satisfies four hierarchical levels of readers. The first level is of educationists and national policy makers who may take up SQC as an important approach of the education system in their country for prosocial personality development of students and thereby targeting to produce quality citizens in the future. At the second level are chief executives or managers of educational institutes who may identify the potential of SQC approach for developing the positive personality of their students. Teachers and SQC facilitators are at the third level, and they can use the book to train and educate their students while initiating and promoting SQC activities at their institutes. And finally, at the fourth level obviously are students who may refer to this book from time to time and practice SQC on their own for self-development and empowerment.

Book excerpt: Students Quality Circles or SQCs in short, are basically miniature level activities of what the Japanese Quality Control Circles (QCCs) are in the corporate world. These activities prepare students for the Quality mindset from the very early age, thus engraving their per-sonalities with Quality. SQC is an innovative concept and practice used as a part of schools' or colleges' co-curricular activities since mid-nineties in many countries of Asian sub-continent. The objective of SQCs program is to develop and prepare students for the corporate world as well as for a quality living in the society. A research study was carried out by the authors in schools in 2020 where SQCs were practiced to find out the effectiveness of this program. The objective of this book is to explain the SQC concept, benefits and its application in schools with the help of findings of a national survey. The book explains the origin of this concept and the differences in the practices of QCCs in the corporate world versus SQCs in the schools. It discusses how effectively students are practicing SQCs and how effectively they are implemented and managed by schools and colleges. Critical success and failure factors of this program are identified and highlighted. The book provides practical guidelines to educationists and management of schools, colleges and universities who want to initiate or improve their existing program. The book identifies the strength of this unique and innovative program in building a society towards world-class quality. The authors strongly recommend this non-traditional but powerful program to be implemented in schools, colleges and universities in all countries. It is hoped that this book will benefit educational institutions in different countries to further improve Quality mindset in their societies through this program.
