Book excerpt: El ruido es un problema al cual no se le da la importancia que merece, y es, de entre todos los peligros que tienen lugar en la industria, de los más comunes. Las actividades laborales de los trabajadores significan un mayor riesgo de trastornos, debido a la exposición a niveles más altos de ruido. La exposición a estos niveles o a una larga permanencia en un ambiente ruidoso puede causar disminución o deterioro importante de la capacidad auditiva y otros defectos fisiológicos que van en det rimento de la salud de los trabajadores y de la productividad de la empresa. Motivados por la importancia del ruido como riesgo laboral en las actividades realizadas en la Planta Piloto MELiSSA se realizó una evaluación inicial para comprobar el nivel de presión sonora que se generaba en cada uno de los procesos, determinar el grado de exposición de los trabajadores y establecer las medidas correctoras más importantes para su protección. Al concluir la evaluación se comprobó que el ruido constituia un contaminante físico de gran importancia en la Planta Piloto MELiSSA. El nivel de ruido que se generaba estaba por encima del valor superior del actual R.O. 286/ 2006 de 87 dB(A) en la sala 9A/C. En el resto de las salas el nivel de ruido estaba por debajo de los requerimientos legales. Se recomendaron tomar medidas que eliminasen o redujesen el nivel de ruido en la sala 9AIC, tales como el encerramiento de la bomba FRISTAM, reducción de los ruidos de impacto, señalizar la zona, formar e informar a los trabajadores, asi como realizar un protocolo de vigilancia de la salud de los trabajadores específica. Posteriormente en una segunda evaluación comprobó la efectividad de las medidas propuestas reduciendo los niveles de ruido, en el peor de los casos de funcionamiento integral del proceso, un grado respecto los niveles dictaminados por el R.O. 286/2006 de (85-87) dB(A).

Book excerpt: In Domesticating Democracy Susan Helen Ellison examines foreign-funded alternate dispute resolution (ADR) organizations that provide legal aid and conflict resolution to vulnerable citizens in El Alto, Bolivia. Advocates argue that these programs help residents cope with their interpersonal disputes and economic troubles while avoiding an overburdened legal system and cumbersome state bureaucracies. Ellison shows that ADR programs do more than that—they aim to change the ways Bolivians interact with the state and with global capitalism, making them into self-reliant citizens. ADR programs frequently encourage Bolivians to renounce confrontational expressions of discontent, turning away from courtrooms, physical violence, and street protest and coming to the negotiation table. Nevertheless, residents of El Alto find creative ways to take advantage of these micro-level resources while still seeking justice and a democratic system capable of redressing the structural violence and vulnerability that ADR fails to treat.
