Book Synopsis Final Report by : International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania
Download or read book Final Report written by International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania was established in October 2003 on the initiative of Ion Iliescu, the President of Romania; this final report was presented to him in November 2004. The aim of the Commission was to research the facts and determine the truth about the Holocaust in Romania during World War II. The report examines various aspects of the state-organized participation of Romania in the mass murder of Jews in Romania and in Romanian-controlled territories, as well as in northern Transylvania where the genocide was perpetrated by the Nazis and their Hungarian allies. Inter alia, it discusses antisemitism and the evolution of Romanian anti-Jewish policies from the late 1930s to 1944, the impact of the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina on antisemitism in Romania, anti-Jewish incidents in 1940 and the pogroms in Bucharest and Iaşi, mass murders of Jews in the recaptured provinces and deportation to Transnistria in 1941, mass murder of Jews in Odessa and in Transnistrian camps, the "Romanianization" of the economy and the expropriation of Romanian Jews, the reaction of the Jewish community in Romania to anti-Jewish policies, and the personal responsibility of Ion Antonescu for the genocide. Relates, also, to war crimes trials held in Romania, and to the trivialization of the Holocaust and its "selective" and outright denial in postwar Romania.

Book Synopsis A Journey Into the Philosophy of Alain Locke by : Johnny Washington
Download or read book A Journey Into the Philosophy of Alain Locke written by Johnny Washington and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-01-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington provides a detailed guide to the philosophy of Alain Locke, one of the most influential African American thinkers of our time. The work gives special attention to what Washington calls Destiny Studies, an approach which allows a people to concentrate on their past, present, and future possibilities, and to view the experience of a race as a coherent unity, rather than a set of fragmented historical happenings. In providing a broad vision of Locke's ideas, Washington considers the views of Booker T. Washington and his contemporaries, the theories of anthropologists concerning race and ethnicity, and many of the social issues current in our own age. By doing so, Washington affirms the importance of Locke as a philosopher and demonstrates the impact of Locke on the destiny of African Americans.

Book Synopsis Nationalist Ideology and Antisemitism by : Leon Volovici
Download or read book Nationalist Ideology and Antisemitism written by Leon Volovici and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After surveying political and ideological antisemitism in modern Romanian history and its main exponents (Cuza, Iorga, Paulescu, Goga), discusses the evolution of antisemitic ideas in 1930s intellectual life, the importance of antisemitism in Iron Guard ideology, and the influence of its leader, Codreanu, and of extreme right-wing intellectuals (especially Nae Ionescu and N. Crainic) on representatives of the "young generation" of intellectuals (e.g. Eliade and Cioran). Emphasizes the link between antisemitic and anti-democratic and pro-fascist attitudes. Focuses on specific cases of evolution to radical antisemitism (e.g. Brătescu-Voineşti and Manoilescu), and deals with the contradictory case of Panait Istrati, a former left-wing militant. Mentions the use of anti-Jewish theological arguments, antisemitic stereotypes in literature, and forms of anti-Jewish discrimination in "free" professional associations. Underlines the great weight of the "Jewish threat" in Romanian nationalist thinking and its impact on cultural life. The 1930s represented the climax of this trend.

Book Synopsis The Correspondence of John Cotton by : Sargent Bush Jr.
Download or read book The Correspondence of John Cotton written by Sargent Bush Jr. and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cotton (1584-1652) was a key figure in the English Puritan movement in the first half of the seventeenth century, a respected leader among his generation of emigrants from England to New England. This volume collects all known surviving correspondence by and to Cotton. These 125 letters--more than 50 of which are here published for the first time--span the decades between 1621 and 1652, a period of great activity and change in the Puritan movement and in English history. Now carefully edited, annotated, and contextualized, the letters chart the trajectory of Cotton's career and revive a variety of voices from the troubled times surrounding Charles I's reign, including those of such prominent figures as Oliver Cromwell, Bishop John Williams, John Dod, and Thomas Hooker, as well as many little-known persons who wrote to Cotton for advice and guidance. Among the treasures of early Anglo-American history, these letters bring to life the leading Puritan intellectual of the generation of the Great Migration and illustrate the network of mutual support that nourished an intellectual and spiritual movement through difficult times.
