This book was released on 2008-09-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighth book of the "Ecclesiastical History," Eusebius, Bishop of Cæsarea, stated his intention of writing, in a distinct treatise, a narrative of the confession of those Martyrs with whom he had himself been acquainted. Up to the time of the discovery of this Syriac copy no such work was known to exist in any separate form, either in Latin or Greek. Here Eusebius writes more than just the history of the martyrs of Christ, he writes of his contemporaries and mentors who suffered the act of martyrdom for the Christian faith.

Book Synopsis Evidence of Greek Philosophical Concepts in the Writings of Ephrem the Syrian by : Ute Possekel
Download or read book Evidence of Greek Philosophical Concepts in the Writings of Ephrem the Syrian written by Ute Possekel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephrem the Syrian (d. 373) has often been taken to represent an unhellenized Semitic form of Christianity in unbroken continuity with the tradition of Jesus and the apostles. This somewhat romanticized view of Ephrem disregards the fact that Syria had been subject to Greek influence since its conquest centuries earlier by Alexander the Great. Ephrem's own writings however frequently betray a familiarity with Greek philosophical ideas. This book first introduces Ephrem's intellectual context and his attitude towards learning. It then systematically analyzes parallels between Ephrem and Greek writers on the subjects of atomism, space, on corporeals, vision, and the four elements. This study thereby demonstrates that Ephrem draws not only on Semitic cultural traditions, but also on Greek philosophical thought.

This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since at least the fourth century CE, the Jewish historian Josephus’ Judean Antiquities has been assumed to be a critical source for valid extra-biblical evidence pertaining to the existence of the historical Jesus, James the Just and John the Baptist. Based on the latest findings from both contemporary and independent research, this book sets out, step by step, the final proof that (apart from the New Testament) there is absolutely no valid record pertaining to the historical existence of any of these individuals.

Book Synopsis Tatian's Diatessaron by : William L. Petersen
Download or read book Tatian's Diatessaron written by William L. Petersen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gospel harmony composed c. 172 C.E., the Diatessaron is one of the earliest witnesses to the gospels. Regarded as the first version of the gospels in Latin, Syriac, and Armenian, the Diatessaron was used by Encratites, Judaic-Christians, and “Great Church” Christians alike. This study is the first comprehensive treatment of the Diatessaron in more than a century. After sketching the second-century setting and Tatian's biography, it describes virtually every Diatessaronic witness and provides a scholar-by-scholar summary of research from 546 to the present. Criteria for reconstructing Diatessaronic readings are developed, and numerous examples offer the reader first-hand experience with the witnesses. It contains the first Bibliography of research on the Diatessaron (600+ titles) and the first “Catalogue of Manuscripts of Diatessaronic Witnesses and Related Works” ever published.

Book Synopsis Christianity, Empire, and the Making of Religion in Late Antiquity by : Jeremy M. Schott
Download or read book Christianity, Empire, and the Making of Religion in Late Antiquity written by Jeremy M. Schott and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christianity, Empire, and the Making of Religion in Late Antiquity, Jeremy M. Schott examines the ways in which conflicts between Christian and pagan intellectuals over religious, ethnic, and cultural identity contributed to the transformation of Roman imperial rhetoric and ideology in the early fourth century C.E. During this turbulent period, which began with Diocletian's persecution of the Christians and ended with Constantine's assumption of sole rule and the consolidation of a new Christian empire, Christian apologists and anti-Christian polemicists launched a number of literary salvos in a battle for the minds and souls of the empire. Schott focuses on the works of the Platonist philosopher and anti- Christian polemicist Porphyry of Tyre and his Christian respondents: the Latin rhetorician Lactantius, Eusebius, bishop of Caesarea, and the emperor Constantine. Previous scholarship has tended to narrate the Christianization of the empire in terms of a new religion's penetration and conquest of classical culture and society. The present work, in contrast, seeks to suspend the static, essentializing conceptualizations of religious identity that lie behind many studies of social and political change in late antiquity in order to investigate the processes through which Christian and pagan identities were constructed. Drawing on the insights of postcolonial discourse analysis, Schott argues that the production of Christian identity and, in turn, the construction of a Christian imperial discourse were intimately and inseparably linked to the broader politics of Roman imperialism.

Book Synopsis Thesaurus Syriacus by : R. Payne Smith
Download or read book Thesaurus Syriacus written by R. Payne Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of languages forms the foundation of any study of ancient societies. While we are dependent upon archaeology to unearth pottery, tools, buildings, and graves, it is through reading the documentary evidence that we learn the nuances of each culture--from receipts and letters to myths and legends. And the access to those documents comes only through the basic work of deciphering scripts, conjugating verbs, untangling syntax, and mastering vocabulary. Ancient Language Resources brings together some of the most significant reference works for the study of ancient languages, including grammars, dictionaries, and related materials. While most of the volumes will be reprints of classic works, we also intend to include new publications. The linguistic circle is widely drawn, encompassing Egyptian, Sumerian, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Phoenician, Hattic, Hittite (Nesite), Hurrian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Greek, Coptic, Latin, Mandaean, Armenian, and Gothic. It is the hope of the publishers that this will continue to encourage study of the ancient languages and keep the work of groundbreaking scholars accessible. --K. C. Hanson Series Editor
