Book excerpt: The past decade has seen growing interest in the use of robotic technology in the food sector. There is a strong indication that this sector and, in particular, industries dealing with meat, fish and poultry products, would make even more use of robotics if such technology were better suited to the specific needs of the food production environment. Clearly the poten tial is high. This book aims to provide the reader with the state of robotic technology currently under development. For the first time a series of chapters, written by leading international authors, brings together a range of topics in robotics as applicable to meat, fish and poultry processing. The contents will interest researchers, managers, manufacturing engin eers, consultants and students. Manufacturers and suppliers of robotic technology or food machinery are strongly recommended to examine the content and exploit the potential benefits described. The co-operation and indeed the full active involvement of research establishments, manufac turers and food producers in teams, is essential in order to achieve the maximum use of robotics.

Book excerpt: This book presents a general view on thin surface coatings used for tribological applications and it is based on the current state of understanding. The mechanisms of friction and wear in sliding and rolling contacts of coated surfaces are described. Basic information on coating techniques, tribology and surface mechanisms is given. Based on collected experimental works information is given on the properties of thin soft coatings, such as polymer, lamellar solid and soft metal coatings; thin hard coatings, such as nitride, carbide, oxide, boride and diamond and diamond-like coatings; and multi-component and multi-layer coatings. The influence of interface layers and lubricants is highlighted. The methods available for characterization of coated surfaces and for mechanical and chemical evaluation of their tribological properties are described. Tribological evaluation methods for accelerated and field testing and the need for standardization of quality assurance procedures are discussed. A methodology for the selection of thin coatings for tribological applications is presented and knowledge based expert system approaches for coating selection are reviewed. For different application examples, the basic tribological contact mechanisms are described and the possibilities for improving their tribological properties by using surface coatings are discussed. The application examples include sliding and rolling bearings, gears, tools for cutting and forming, erosion resistant applications, magnetic recording systems and bio-medical implants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today understanding turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling flow problems in engineering. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects, which are nearly always important in practice, are still at an early stage of development. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulence momentum, heat and mass transfer. The 89 papers, including 5 invited papers, in this volume present and discuss new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The high standard of the contributions on the developing and testing of turbulent models attests to the world-wide interest this domain is currently attracting from researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft computing is a branch of computing which, unlike hard computing, can deal with uncertain, imprecise and inexact data. The three constituents of soft computing are fuzzy-logic-based computing, neurocomputing, and genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic contributes the capability of approximate reasoning, neurocomputing offers function approximation and learning capabilities, and genetic algorithms provide a methodology for systematic random search and optimization. These three capabilities are combined in a complementary and synergetic fashion. This book presents a cohesive set of contributions dealing with important issues and applications of soft computing in systems and control technology. The contributions include state-of-the-art material, mathematical developments, fresh results, and how-to-do issues. Among the problems studied via neural, fuzzy, neurofuzzy and genetic methodologies are: data fusion, reinforcement learning, approximation properties, multichannel imaging, signal processing, system optimization, gaming, and several forms of control. The book can serve as a reference for researchers and practitioners in the field. Readers can find in it a large amount of useful and timely information, and thus save considerable effort in searching for other scattered literature.
