Book Synopsis The European Dream by : Jeremy Rifkin
Download or read book The European Dream written by Jeremy Rifkin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time the American Dream was the ideal and envy of the world. But today, at the dawn of the new Millennium, Europe is pointing a new way to the future. In this major new book, best-selling author Jeremy Rifkin argues that Europe has a vision of its own and is overtaking America as the world’s next superpower. The American Dream was based on economic growth, personal wealth and independence. It was synonymous with love of country and patriotism, frontier mentality and the unbridled exercise of power. Yet what were once considered prime virtues - cherished and idealised not only in America but throughout the world - are increasingly seen by many as drawbacks and even impediments. But while the American Dream tires and languishes in the past, a new European Dream is being born. Today we see a new set of values emerging which are focused on sustainable development, quality of life and multilateralism. More cosmopolitan and less concerned with the brute exercise of power, the European Dream is better positioned to accommodate the many forces that are propelling us into a more interconnected and interdependent world. Where does Britain fit into this story? The British find themselves betwixt and between a fading American Dream and a newly emerging European Dream which is gaining the upper hand in our contemporary global age. Rifkin argues that Britain is uniquely positioned to play a bridge role between Europe and America and has the potential to help create a synergy between the two superpowers of the 21st century. But in order to exercise any real influence in world affairs, Britain must choose to be part of a larger political entity. In a globally connected world, no people can exist any longer as an island unto themselves. The only question for Britain is whether it will make its home with America or with Europe.

The possibility that everyone can be consulted about everything, with traditional forms of democratic representation being challenged by the new power of the media, is considered with its profound implications, including the development of novel methods of organizing and regulating political life.
Book Synopsis The Greek Language in the Digital Age by : Georg Rehm
Download or read book The Greek Language in the Digital Age written by Georg Rehm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-13 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

Book Synopsis Accomplishing Europe Through Education and Training by :
Download or read book Accomplishing Europe Through Education and Training written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Europe is to remain at the driving edge, economic and political progress must be complemented by offering a "European vision" to Europe's young people. All young Europeans must be guaranteed access to education and training culminating in acquisition of a foundation of recognized basic knowledge and skills and access to guidance and counseling at critical moments of transition. Maintaining Europe's social cohesion hinges on the following actions being taken at the European Union level: affirm the need for intercultural schools to transmit the common values on which European civilization is founded and help devise and disseminate ways of enabling Europe's young people to play a fuller role as European citizens; set as a goal the acquisition of a foundation of essential basic knowledge at the end of compulsory education for all young Europeans; promote the definition and acquisition of new occupational profiles in which new information technologies play a major part; anchor in some legal foundation a general European aim that serves as a guide for the different member states' education and training systems; and secure the financial means to make Europe's educational standards among the best in the world.
