Book Synopsis A Turkish Woman's European Impressions by : Hanoum Zeyneb
Download or read book A Turkish Woman's European Impressions written by Hanoum Zeyneb and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeyneb Hanoum and her sister Melek Hanoum, belonging to the Ottoman Muslim nobility, were given a Western-style education by their progressive father. However, he also expected them to live the isolated lives of Ottoman ladies. So, the sisters revolted and teamed with the French author Pierre Loti, hoping that European intellectual support would speed up Ottoman social reform. Fleeing Istanbul in 1906 because of the fear of imperial retaliation, the sisters traveled in disguise to Europe and hoped to find "freedom" in the West. With Zeyneb Hanum's letters, this book challenges Orientalist stereotypes and records the dynamic engagement between Eastern and Western women at the end of the 19th century.

Book Synopsis British and Irish Experiences and Impressions of Central Europe, c.1560–1688 by : David Worthington
Download or read book British and Irish Experiences and Impressions of Central Europe, c.1560–1688 written by David Worthington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst much recent scholarly work has sought to place early modern British and Irish history within a broader continental context, most of this has focused on western or northern Europe. In order to redress the balance, this new study by David Worthington explores the connections linking writers and expatriates from the later Tudor and Stuart kingdoms with the two major dynastic conglomerates east of the Rhine, the Austrian Habsburg lands and Poland-Lithuania. Drawing on a variety of sources, including journals, diaries, letters and travel accounts, the book not only shows the high level of scholarly interest evidenced within contemporary English language works about the region, but how many more British and Irish people ventured there than is generally recognised. As well as the soldiers, merchants and diplomats one might expect, we discover more unexpected and colourful characters, including a polymath Irish moral theologian in Vienna, an orphaned English poetess in Prague, a Welsh humanist in Cracow, and a Scottish physician and botanist at the Vasa court in Warsaw. This examination of the diverse range of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English religious, intellectual, political, military and commercial contacts with central Europe provides not only a more balanced view of British and Irish history, but also continues the process of reintegrating the histories of the European regions. Furthermore, by extending the focus of research beyond widely studied areas, towards other more illuminating, international aspects, the book challenges scholars to analyse these networks within less parochial, and more transnational settings.

Download or read book This Horrid Practice written by Paul Moon and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Though stronger evidence of this horrid practice prevailing among the inhabitants of this coast will scarcely be required, we have still stronger to give.' - Captain James Cook This Horrid Practice uncovers an unexplored taboo of New Zealand history - the widespread practice of cannibalism in pre-European Maori society. Until now, many historians have tried to avoid it and many Maori have considered it a subject best kept quiet about in public. Paul Moon brings together an impressive array of sources from a variety of disciplines to produce this frequently contentious but always stimulating exploration of how and why Maori ate other human beings, and why the practice shuddered to a halt just a few decades after the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand. The book includes a comprehensive survey of cannibalism practices among traditional Maori, carefully assessing the evidence and concluding it was widespread. Other chapters look at how explorers and missionaries saw the practice; the role of missionaries and Christianity in its end; and, in the final chapter, why there has been so much denial on the subject and why some academics still deny that it ever happened. This Horrid Practice promises to be one of the leading works of New Zealand history published in 2008. It is a highly original work that every New Zealand history enthusiast will want to own and read.

Download or read book Local Policies and the European Social Fund written by Zimmermann, Katharina and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews how local social and employment policy fields react to the European Social Fund (ESF) to determine the role of the ESF in local activation policies. Drawing on both sociology and political science literature on welfare state reforms, the author examines what shapes local policy reactions to ESF and what effects these reactions have on change in local policy fields. Comparing data from 18 local case studies across 6 European countries, and deploying an innovative mixed-method approach, the book presents comparative evidence on everyday challenges in the context of the ESF and discusses how these findings are applicable to other funding schemes.

Book Synopsis Cooperation Between Antitrust Agencies at the International Level by : Bruno Zanettin
Download or read book Cooperation Between Antitrust Agencies at the International Level written by Bruno Zanettin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of international antitrust enforcement is high on the agenda for both developed and developing countries. Bilateral cooperation between antitrust agencies, in particular the European Commission and US agencies, is the focus of this new work. It first shows how bilateral cooperation was developed as a response to the limits of the unilateral and extraterritorial application of national competition laws, and how it has evolved from an instrument initially designed to avoid conflicts into a tool aimed at coordinating joint investigations of international competition cases. It then considers how bilateral cooperation could be used optimally, by analysing two forms of advanced cooperation: the exchange of confidential information, and positive comity, which is the only satisfactory answer competition law can provide to market access cases. It shows that the use of such instruments is limited by significant legal and political obstacles, even in the context of the exemplary EC US relationship. The book therefore argues that the efficient use of bilateral cooperation will be limited to a small number of well-established competition agencies. If international anticompetitive practices are to be efficiently addressed by an increasingly large and heterogeneous group of competition agencies, horizontal cooperation between antitrust agencies must be complemented by a multilateral and supranational solution going beyond proposals currently put forward. The book concludes that only the WTO and its dispute settlement system could provide the basis for such a system.
