Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overshadowed by the work of the great masters, folk art was for centuries neglected by collectors and museums, and scorned by connoisseurs. Indeed it only began to attract serious critical attention and public appreciation during the nineteenth century, while the spread of the Industrial Revolution was threatening it with extinction. Since then, though scholars have devoted much effort to the study of the subject on a national or regional basis, and have published the fruits of their researches in monographs and specialist journals, no major work of synthesis has appeared. The field is vast, for, if we include those American communities which are of European origin, it ranges (in area) from the Urals to the Catskills, and from Norway to Peru, and (in time) from the Middle Ages onwards. This rich and varied body of anonymous achievement in the arts and crafts has now been made the subject of an exhaustive coordinated study under the editorship of H J Hansen. The contributors are all specialists who are professionally concerned with the study and preservation of folk art, and have been drawn from many countries. In the text, the subject is treated country by country. In the illustrations, the artifacts are arranged by category: buildings, furniture, household utensils, ceramics, glass, costume, toys, woodcarving and painting-a uniquely comprehensive pictorial survey, made possible by the generosity of museums and private collectors all over Europe, who freely made their treasures available for the purpose. The last chapter, devoted to folk art on the market, is a valuable guide to the collector and dealer. Indispensable to the scholar, this book will also be a revelation to anyone who has hitherto regarded folk art as being inevitably quaint or primitive. It provides a remarkable record of the beauty and refinement of style which result from direct contact between the human creative impulse and the articles used in everyday life by ordinary people.

Book excerpt: Listen to the artists of the Brazilian Northeast. Their work, they say, comes of continuity and creativity. Continuity runs along lines of learning toward social coherence. Creativity brings challenges and deep personal satisfaction. What they say and do in Brazil aligns with ethnographic evidence from New Mexico and North Carolina; from Ireland, Portugal, and Italy; from Nigeria, Turkey, India, and Bangladesh; from China and Japan. This book is about that, about folk art as a sign of human unity.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Germans who immigrated to America in the nineteenth century settled in the lower Missouri River valley between St. Charles and Boonville, Missouri. In this magnificent book, which includes some six hundred photographs and drawings, Charles van Ravenswaay examines that immigration--who came, how, and why--and surveys the distinctive Missouri-German architecture, art, and crafts produced in the towns or on the farms of the rural counties of Cooper, Cole, Osage, Gasconade, Franklin, Montgomery, Warren, and St. Charles from the 1830s until the closing years of the century. As the immigrants sought to transplant their native culture to the Missouri backwoods, the compromises they were forced to make with conditions in Missouri produced many fascinating and individualistic structures and objects. They built half-timbered, stone, and brick houses and barns with designs reflecting the traditions of the many German regions from which the builders emigrated. The author's far-reaching study of immigrants' arts and crafts included furniture in traditional peasant designs as well as the Biedermeier and eclectic styles, redware and stoneware pottery, textiles, wood and stone carving, metalwares, firearms, baskets, musical instruments, prints, and paintings and identifies craftsmen working in all of these fields. One chapter is devoted to the objects the immigrants brought with them from the Old World. Added to this new printing of The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri is a touching and informative introduction by Adolf E. Schroeder. Schroeder's long friendship with Charles van Ravenswaay allows him to reflect on the vast contributions this author made to our knowledge of Missouri's German culture. Everyone interested in architecture, crafts, or Missouriana will find this book indispensable as they savor van Ravenswaay's excellent presentation of the craftsmen and their products against the background of the aspirations and folkways of a distinctive culture.

Book excerpt: Outsider art, traditionally the work of psychiatric patients, offenders and minority groups, and art therapy have shared histories of art created in psychiatric care. As the two fields grow, this book reveals the current issues faced by both disciplines and traces their shared histories to help them build clearer and more coherent identities. More often than not, the history of art therapy has been tied to psychological and psychiatric roots, which has led to problems in defining the field and forced boundaries between what is considered 'art' and what is considered 'art therapy'. Similarly, the name and identity of outsider art is constantly debated. By viewing art therapy and outsider art through their shared histories, this book helps to alleviate the challenges and issues of definition faced by the fields today.
