Book Synopsis European Romanticism by : Stephen Prickett
Download or read book European Romanticism written by Stephen Prickett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 1277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romanticism was always culturally diverse. Though English-language anthologies have previously tended to see Romanticism as predominantly British, the term itself actually originated in Germany, where it became the banner of a Europe-wide movement involving the profound intellectual and aesthetic changes which we now associate with modernity. This anthology is the first to place British Romanticism within a comprehensive and multi-lingual European context, showing how ideas and writers interconnected across national and linguistic boundaries. By reprinting everything in the original languages, together with an English translation of all non-English material in parallel on the opposite page, it offers a new intellectual map of Romanticism. Material is thematically arranged as follows: - Art & Aesthetics - The Self - History - Language - Hermeneutics & Theology - Nature - The Exotic - Science While focusing on European texts, the inclusion of essays on their North American and Japanese reception means that Romanticism can be seen as a global phenomenon, influencing a surprising number of the ways in which the modern world sees itself.
Book Synopsis Narrating Europe by : Michael Gehler
Download or read book Narrating Europe written by Michael Gehler and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Dewey and European Education by : Jürgen Oelkers
Download or read book Dewey and European Education written by Jürgen Oelkers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although John Dewey's ideas have been of central interest in Anglo-Saxon philosophy and history of education, it is only recently that similar interest has developed in continental Europe. Deweyan philosophy of education has had to pass through national filters, which meant that it was received in national contexts of reform. The `German Dewey' was differently construed to the French, Italian, or English Dewey. This seems to change after 1989 (and the fall of socialist education) when interest in Dewey increased. The new political and philosophical interest in Dewey has to do with the lost alternative `socialism', and thus with the opening of Eastern Europe and the new problems of education within a worldwide community. This volume stresses two points. The original interest of European education in Dewey will be presented in case studies, concerning different national contexts and thus different Dewey's. What can be called the renewal of interest will be argued from different sides. It is our intention to show that today's interest in Dewey is not the remake of the reception within the different camps of progressive education. This volume will be of interest to philosophers of education, historians of education, and people engaged in the philosophy, history and the reception of Dewey.

Download or read book Europe Today written by Ronald Tiersky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a set of both country case studies and analysis of the European Union. The contributors, an authoritative group of Americans and Europeans, explore the new Europe, West and East, using intertwining themes of domestic politics, European integration, and European security. Each chapter provides a foundation of basic political information and explanation, enhanced by distinctive and informed perspectives on current issues. Now in its third edition, it presents an up-to-date and thoughtful treatment on the war in Iraq, debates over NATO's evolving role, U.S.-European relations, enlargement issues, and the challenges of terrorism in a European context. All chapters have been thoroughly revised, and completely new chapters have been added on France, Great Britain, Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, EU law, and terrorism. With its strong international emphasis and focus on Europe before and after Iraq, this book leads readers toward a coherent view of intra-European conflicts, Europe and the United States, and Europe's international responsibilities.
