Book excerpt: "Although the book covers many aspects of Drtikol's career and life-work, it is mainly devoted to his photographs. 120 duotone and 8 colour full-page reproductions of Drtikol's works from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and a number of other public and private collections illustrate representative selections from all his creative periods, with an emphasis on Drtikol's masterly nudes from the second half of the 1920s, when he moved gradually from his beginnings in pictorialism and symbolism to react in his highly individual way to current avant-garde trends. The text, supplemented with almost fifty other reproductions, analyzes and characterizes Drtikol's photographs and locates them in the wider spiritual and artistic context of their time with the help of quotations from Drtikol's notes and correspondence. The monograph also contains a complete exhibition history, bibliographic listing, and a number of little known works, some never before published."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place by : Gregory Crewdson
Download or read book Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place written by Gregory Crewdson and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although these series illustrate distinct subject matter, they share Crewdson's unique preoccupations and compelling aesthetic. "Fireflies" is the result of two solitary summer months spent photographing the fireflies that came alive at dusk each evening. "Beneath the Roses" depicts the homes, streets, and forests of unnamed small towns, revealing emotionally charged moments in the lives of seemingly ordinary individuals. In "Sanctuary," haunting images of the legendary Italian film studio Cinecitta capture the beauty of the decaying film sets. Texts from curators of the exhibition and Crewdson himself offer fresh insight and examine the parallels between these seemingly disparate subjects. Celebrating some of the artist's greatest work, this volume is a must-have for any Crewdson fan and the perfect introduction to those discovering him for the first time. Praise for Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place "Whether one is exploring Crewdson's work for the first time, or revisiting his images, text from both the artist himself and the curators involved gives the reader a personal interaction with Crewdson that illustrates his passion for capturing the lives of others." --Huffington Post

Book Synopsis Arte Del Poder by : Alvaro Soler del Campo

Book excerpt: The Royal Armory in Madrid, assembled at a time when the Spanish Crown was at the height of its international power, is the oldest and one of the finest and largest armories in the world, imbued with great historical, artistic, and symbolic significance. Armor drawn from the unsurpassed holdings of the Spanish Royal Armory is shown in this exhibition alongside portraits of rulers dressed in the same armor, painted by such masters as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Diego Velázquez, and Alonso Sánchez Coello. Several large and magnificent tapestries from the royal collection also depict the armor in use. Together, some 75 works illustrate the use of luxurious armor in projecting an image of royal power in Imperial Spain. The exhibition includes several full suits of armor, helmets, shields, and equestrian armor--worn in battle but more often in Renaissance parades, pageants, and jousting tournaments. The works of art on view date from the reigns of the Holy Roman Emperors Maximilian I of Austria (1508-1519) and Emperor Charles V (1519-1558), to those of his successors, King Philip II (1556-1598), King Philip III (1598-1621), and King Philip IV (1621-1665). This is the first time that the armor has been exhibited together with the portraits in which it is depicted.
