Christians do not share a common table. Can a divided and injured Church celebrate the Eucharist, the sacrament of Christian communion?" "These are a few of the questions addressed in this study of the ecclesiology of communion. The "borderless" Church of the infinite love of Christ exists today. The divided Churches need only receive the communion of God as their innermost nature - at the borderless table of God's kingdom."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This book is about ecumenism, from a Catholic point of view. The first part, chapters 1 and 2, describe the history of divisions within the Church, as well as of the efforts to bring about Christian unity. The second part examines Ecumenism from a systematic theological perspective. This first part takes into account the different factors that led to definitive ruptures within the Church, which usually are not only theological. The text gives useful information about what happened after the respective divisions as well as about the various attempts to restore unity, the development of the Ecumenical Movement in the 20th Century, and the current situation of ecumenical dialogue within the Catholic Church. While offering insight into the sad history that has led to the present disunity, this work also highlights the way Christians have sought to bring to fulfill the petition of Christ that his disciples might be one, as He and the Father are one. The second part―chapters three, four and five―offers a systematic theological analysis of unity in the Church, from the point of view of dogmatic theology. We find here an explanation of the Catholic concept of ecumenism, of how Catholic theology understands the unity of the Church, and, finally, of the Catholic principles which sustain the efforts for regaining unity in the Church. The Second Vatican Council, and particularly the Constitution Lumen gentium and the Decree Unitatis redintegratio, are at the foundation of these reflections. At the same time, since the theology of the Church and the life of the Church are intimately connected, there is a profound link between this dogmatic section and the earlier historical section. The last chapter, about the practice of ecumenism, is also written from a theological perspective, but with more links with life and spirituality. The chapter recalls that ecumenism can never simply remain a set of theological principles, but rather inspires an attitude and action in charity which are essential to the Christian life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians worship on a regular basis on the Lord's Day. They have done so from the beginning, and their worship has centered on the Eucharist, following Jesus's words, "Do this in remembrance of me." Over the two millennia of the Christian tradition there have been shifts of emphasis and understanding about the Eucharist. This book attempts to point out, by providing accessible accounts of both liturgies and liturgists across the centuries and traditions, just how much different Christians have in common and how they can benefit from attending to one another's worship. The author's ultimate hope is that in its small way, the book will contribute to Christians worshiping together.

Book excerpt: The theology of communion, or Koinonia, has been at the centre of the ecumenical movement for more than thirty years. It is central to the self-understanding of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and has been prominent in the work of the World Council of Churches. This book, based on the 1996 Hulsean Lectures, examines the significance of Koinonia for contemporary ecumenical theology, tracing the development of contemporary understanding in critical engagement with the thoughts of Plato, Aristotle, the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, the Cappadocian Fathers and Augustine. In each case, reflection on community life is related to actual communities in which texts were produced. The importance of conflict and the place of politics for the Koinonia that constitutes the Christian churches is a major theme throughout. Communion is seen as a gift to be received and a discipline to be cultivated in the continuing practice of ecumenism.

Book excerpt: The theology of the Eucharist has long been the subject of heated debate, particularly since the Reformation. George Hunsinger's book explores ways in which Christians might resolve their differences in this area. with the aim of fostering ecumenical convergence, he tackles three key issues dividing the churches about the Eucharist: real presence, Eucharistic sacrifice, and ordained ministry. Hunsinger, a Protestant theologian in the Reformed tradition, brings Eastern Orthodox views more systematically into the discussion than has been common in the West. He also discusses the social significance of the Eucharist. His detailed conclusion summarizes and clarifies the argument as a whole with an eye to explaining how the views proposed in the book could lead the churches, beginning with the Reformed church, closer to the day when obstacles to Eucharistic sharing are overcome. George Hunsinger has been chosen as the recipient of the 2010 Karl Barth Prize by the jury of the Union of Evangelical Churches in the Evangelical Church in Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Lima Declarations of Convergence in 1982, no other document in the international ecumenical movement has dealt with Eucharistic communion at the celebration of the Lord's Supper in remembrance of the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. On the occasion of the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 2022 in Karlsruhe, ecumenically minded Protestant, Free Church, Old Catholic, Roman Catholic and Orthodox theologians from Germany have taken up this topic afresh. They provide insights into the current state of ecumenical conversations, present the various traditions of confessional worship and offer practical suggestions for an ecumenically sensitive liturgical practice. The German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA) contributes a joint statement on the subject. Memories of the 3rd Ecumenical Kirchentag (Church Congress) 2021 in Frankfurt am Main are revived. The decision to go to the Lord's Table together, trusting in the presence of Jesus Christ in the celebration of Holy Communion, Eucharist and Holy Sacrifice, can be justified theologically, but continues to raise controversy. On the Sunday of the Assembly in Karlsruhe, September 4, 2022, a rich range of liturgies will commemorate the life of Jesus, his death for us, and the sending of God's Spirit. Together, all churches testify that ``The love of Christ moves, reconciles and unites the world.'' Hacik Gazer, Professor of History and Theology of Eastern Christianity at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg; Armenian Apostolic theologian. Markus Iff, Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecumenics at the Theological Seminary of Ewersbach; pastor in the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches. Werner Klän, retired Professor of Church History and Systematic Theology; pastor of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dorothea Sattler, Professor of Ecumenical Theology and Dogmatics at the University of M"unster; Roman Catholic theologian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the prayer for unity described in chapter 17 of the Gospel of John, Jesus prays that "all may be one." This theme recurs in the New Testament and in writings throughout Christian history. In contrast, U.S. society is characterized by "individualism" as evidenced by various recent scholarly publications and surveys. Americans are less likely now to participate in social groups than they were a couple of decades ago. As a result, some aspects of good liturgy, such as common posture or communal singing, are increasingly perceived as "counter-cultural." Eucharist and American Culture is a unique resource that considers the impact of American individualism upon the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. Short, insightful chapters offer key sociological points and liturgical understanding as well as summarize recent academic works and research results of Robert Bellah, Robert Putnam, and Jean Twenge. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is consulted regarding the celebration of the liturgy. Suitable for use as an undergraduate religious studies resource, this book will also find a place in courses in religion and culture and sociology of religion, as well as in seminary formation programs and programs for parish liturgical ministers. Book jacket.
