Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalyptus in CaliforniaSince the introduction of the first species of Eucalyptus, the seeds of other species have been imported each year by seedsmen, nurserymen, and in many cases ranch owners, until at the present time there are growing in the State nearly one hundred species. The University of California. Has seventy named species growing on the Forestry Station grounds at. Santa Monica, Cal.; there are specimen trees Of nearly every species over ten years Of age, and bearing seed at the present time, while there are young trees Of all the promising lumber Eucalypts. From this large collection there can be selected species that will grow on nearly any soil in a frostless region, while there are a few that can endure temperature as low as 18 F. Without injury. There are a few Eucalypts that can stand extremes of temperature from 20 F. To 120 F and at different altitudes; but with these trees it is as with any other. There is one certain location best adapted to the greatest develop ment; it may be a situation near the coast in a foggy atmosphere, the river bottom lands, the inland valleys or in swamps. Care should be taken in selecting a species for any certain locality, that the conditions there are the ones which will bring the species in question to the highest point Of development.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Eucalyptus in California Plantations Undoubtedly the first seeds brought into California were of the Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus, and the early tests with this species showed it to be so thoroughly at home under the new conditions, and so rapid in its growth, that most of the planting was confined to this tree. This fact seems rather strange as this species has never bee-n considered of much commercial value in either Tasmania or Victoria where it is native, and where mature trees of much larger dimensions are found than any grown thus far under California conditions. The first trees planted were usually set out singly or in narrow belts, and their rapidity of growth gave rise to many exaggerated statements as to the probable financial returns fro-m plantations. Well meaning but over-enthusiastic persons made estimates of growth of plantations by assuming that each tree planted therein would grow as rapidly as trees in the Open under optimum soil, moisture, and light conditions forgetting entirely the influences exerted by different type-s of soil and climate, the percentage of loss in established plantations, and the slowing up in rate of growth because of competition between trees growing under crowded plantation conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalypts Cultivated in the United States The Eucalyptus is certainly of all the exotic trees thus transplanted the one which excites the most astonishment by the rapidity of its growth, its gigantic proportions, and the very great diversity of its appearance and foliage. It is already so abundant that it is encountered at every step in the public places, in all the gardens, and it is already being used as a forest sort. It is a sun that never smites. Its life-giving warmth sends the sluggish blood coursing with new vigor through the veins, draws the Odor from the orange blossoms, the pungent scent from the eucalyptus trees, and sets the bees humming half-surfeited amidst the fragrant sage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalyptus The planting of trees of various species of Eucalyptus in California has been carried on since January, 1856, when Mr. C. L. Reimer successfully introduced 14 species. During all this time neither nurserymen nor the general public have had any work on this genus by which they could identify the various species. Everything depended on the seedsmen primarily and in a secondary way on the accuracy of the records of planters. From mistake in both these respects the greatest confusion and uncertainty has arisen. Of the large number of useful species introduced into California but three or four are certainly and general! known today. The botanical works covering this genus are inaccessible to the public on account of their great cost. There are only three copies of the Eucalyptographia and two of Bentham's books in this State, as far as I know. The importance of this genus as producers of kino, oils, timber and fuel, for ornament and the reclamation of waste places and for the probable sanitary effects of several of the species together with the rapidity of growth of nearly all and the remarkable adaptability to the major portion of California makes a means of identification a want that should be supplied. Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller has, in the broad spirit of a true scientific man, given me the use of his great work on this genus, even to copying the plates.
