Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalypts Cultivated in the United States The Eucalyptus is certainly of all the exotic trees thus transplanted the one which excites the most astonishment by the rapidity of its growth, its gigantic proportions, and the very great diversity of its appearance and foliage. It is already so abundant that it is encountered at every step in the public places, in all the gardens, and it is already being used as a forest sort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalyptus in California Since the introduction of the first species of Eucalyptus, the seeds of other species have been imported each year by seedsmen, nurserymen, and in many cases ranch owners, until at the present time there are growing in the State nearly one hundred species. The University of California. Has seventy named species growing on the Forestry Station grounds at. Santa Monica, Cal.; there are specimen trees Of nearly every species over ten years Of age, and bearing seed at the present time, while there are young trees Of all the promising lumber Eucalypts. From this large collection there can be selected species that will grow on nearly any soil in a frostless region, while there are a few that can endure temperature as low as 18° F. Without injury. There are a few Eucalypts that can stand extremes of temperature from 20° F. To 120° F and at different altitudes; but with these trees it is as with any other. There is one certain location best adapted to the greatest develop ment; it may be a situation near the coast in a foggy atmosphere, the river bottom lands, the inland valleys or in swamps. Care should be taken in selecting a species for any certain locality, that the conditions there are the ones which will bring the species in question to the highest point Of development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Culture and Eucalyptus Trees In presenting to the public a printed copy of my "Lecture on Forest Planting and Australian Gum-Trees," delivered before the Santa Barbara College Association, for the benefit of the library, it is necessary to preface the lecture by the statement that it appears in print in consequence of repeated demands for the publication from several localities in the southern part of California. Forest protection, the want of trees, in almost every part of the State, is manifest to all owners of land, who are eager to begin the planting; the only question being - What shall we plant? The rapidity of growth of the Blue Gum, and the facility with which it can be propagated, is a feature of great importance; but information is wanted. Much that has been written on the subject is mere speculative theories, often contradictory, and too uncertain to merit the confidence necessary to base such an important industry. This industry not only necessitates that the protection should be cheaply and quickly obtained, but that the tree should have a value for mechanical or other purposes. This value gives confidence to the planter, without which it can not be expected the work will go on. The inquiry comes, What is the value of the tree? Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Eucalyptus Planters For general purposes, however, the blue gum has been used more extensively than all other species combined, and even to-day the knowledge of most laymen of the eucalypts is confined to their acquaintance with this species. Several other species, however, possess special qualities which warrant their selection for particular uses and for certain localities. Among these are the sugar, manna, gray, red and lemon gums, which, with the blue gum, owing to their rapid growth and splendid development, rank as the timber eucalypts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Research on the Eucalypts: Especially in Regard to Their Essential Oils In the previous edition the species more particularly investigated were those restricted to the South Eastern area of the Continent, but since that publication was issued the research has extended to species found in all the States of the mainland, as well as those of Tasmania. No pains have been spared in the endeavour to insure that the material worked upon was true to name - botanically correct; and in order to determine the constancy of the product from individual species, material has been collected from widely separated localities, so that commercial require ments for uniformity might be satisfied. The collection of such a mass of material for investigation was no, small task, the genus being distributed over an area of about square miles of territory, more particularly when it is understood that, with two or three exceptions, all the distillations were carried out in Sydney under our own supervision, the necessary botanical control being, in this way, well assured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucalypts in Hawaii: A Survey of Practices and Research Programs In areas suitable for growing timber, soils are usually acid in reaction-sometimes strongly acid. Organic litter decomposes and disappears very quickly. In most places in eucalypt forests mineral soil is covered only by litter that has fallen within less than a year. Except in the areas of heaviest rainfall, ponds and streams that run continually are uncommon. Mest water from rains penetrates into crevices in the underlying lava rock and sinks to great depths. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Research on the Eucalypts of Tasmania and Their Essential Oils In the preparation of this paper we have to acknowledge our indebtedness to Mr. L. Rodway, Government Botanist, who placed his knowledge of Tasmanian Eucalypts at our disposal, and gave up much of his time to procuring material. We would also like to thank the following gentlemen for assistance rendered: -Messrs. T. Stephens, R. A. Black, D'Arcy Addison, G. Ellis, and A. H. Higgs. The collector, Mr. L. G. Irby, met with the greatest assistance and help from every one in the island with whom he came in contact in this connection, as did also Mr. C. Laseron when collecting previously. 2. - Introduction. The Tasmanian Eucalypts will always possess an historical interest over their confreres, as it was from Van Diemen's Land that specimens of the genus were first made known to science, the honour being conferred on the well-known "Eucalyptus" of Tasmania - E. obliqua, by L'Heritier, in 1788 - the "Stringy-bark colonorum" as mentioned by Hooker in the "London Journal of Botany," when describing this tree under the name of E. gigantea, in 1847. Since that date several famous botanists have worked at the genus as represented in Tasmania, the late Sir Joseph D. Hooker giving special attention to it in his classical work The Flora of Tasmania, published in 1860. This investigation is, however, the first that has treated the subject from a technological point of view. It is the work of a joint research in botany and chemistry, consequently the results, as might be expected by working on so extended a field, are not quite in accord with past classifications of these Eucalypts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus, Vol. 5: Part 1.; Part XLI of the Complete Work A lofty tree, with persistent bark and very expanding branches. Heart-wood very hard, reddish. Branchlets in some instances slender and somewhat angular, in other cases thick and cylindrical. Leaf stalks g - u, inches long. Leaves measuring 2h inches in length or occasionally longer, rarely shortened to an almost oval form, 1 - 2 inches broad, often very gradually narrowed upwards, blunt at the base. Panicle almost corymbous; its ultimate ower-stalks generally about 1 inch long, as well as the branchlets, pale, not shining. The unopened calyces egg-shaped, their very blunt and rather thick lid rather separating by a horizontal rupture than by a well-defined suture of circumcision; the tube in owering state about an inch long, sometimes subsequently slightly turbinate. A few of the outer stamens occasionally devoid of anthers; filaments, according to the note of the collector, whitish in a fresh state, but reddish-yellow when dry; the longer filaments 4 - 5 lines long. Anthers hardly a line long; their cells separated by a broad connective. Style half-included within the calyx, exceeded by the stamens. Fruit 1 inch long, or somewhat longer, not angular; the valves deltoid-sha ped, hardly inch long. Fertile seeds very compressed, terminated by a semi-oval membrane, giving a length of about inch for the whole seed.
