Book Synopsis Schools and Work by : Charles R. Day
Download or read book Schools and Work written by Charles R. Day and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is unique in the world in the degree to which is has tried to integrate technical and vocational training in its schools. Day (history, Simon Fraser U.) examines this reform in France since the late-nineteenth century, within the broader context of educational development and economic modernization. His analysis demonstrates ways in which government and industry have redefined skill requirements, reformed schools and programs, and established new forms of cooperation--work-study, continuing education, apprenticeship programs--to produce a well-educated and well-trained citizenry and workforce. c. Book Synopsis Mobility, Elites, and Education in French Society of the Second Empire by : P Harrigan
Download or read book Mobility, Elites, and Education in French Society of the Second Empire written by P Harrigan and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1980-09-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a unique historical source, this book examines the social origins, career expectations, and first jobs of 28,000 students in the “elitist” French secondary schools of the 1860s. Using sophisticated statistical analysis as well as conventional historical sources, the work concludes that schooling reached a wider audience than has been so far believed and that substantial social mobility occurred within the school system, but that family background, rather than educational factors, directed students’ career aspirations and achievements. It also argues that although education expanded in urban, industrialized areas, mobility did not increase in these areas. A final chapter reconsiders nineteenth–century thought concerning education in the light of findings about the social effects of schools.

Book Synopsis Contemporary France by : D. L. Hanley
Download or read book Contemporary France written by D. L. Hanley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many recent studies of French politics have tended to concentrate on the French political system in isolation. Contemporary France aims to set the working of the French political system into its historical, social and economic context. The first section gives a succinct description of the main developments since 1944 in all major contexts - economy, society, domestic politics and foreign relations. The authors then analyse the economic, social and cultural structures of present-day France, and discuss the institutional framework of decision-making and the major political forces involved in it. There are also chapters on French external and defence policy and on the education system, all of which are set in the context of the political system as a whole. Aimed primarily at students of European history and politics or of French society and culture, the book assumes little knowledge in the social sciences and will be readily accessible to beginners in this field.

Book Synopsis Trajectories and Origins: Survey on the Diversity of the French Population by : Cris Beauchemin
Download or read book Trajectories and Origins: Survey on the Diversity of the French Population written by Cris Beauchemin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the main findings of a ground-breaking survey on immigrants and the second generation in France. The data, collected from more than 20, 000 persons representative of the population living in France, offer invaluable insights into the trajectories and experience of ethnic minorities. The book explains how France has been an immigrant-receiving country for over a century and how it is now a multicultural society with an unprecedented level of origin diversity. While immigrants and their descendants are targets of clichés and stereotyping, this book provides unique quantitative findings on their situation in all areas of personal and working life. Is origin in itself a factor of inequality? With its detailed reconstitutions of educational, occupational and conjugal trajectories and its exploration of access to housing and health, this book provides multiple approaches to answering this question. One of the work’s major contributions is to combine objective and subjective measures of discrimination: this is the first study in France to focus on racism as experienced by those subjected to it, while opening up new methodological perspectives on the experience of prejudice by origin, religion, and skin colour.
