Book excerpt: The term rationalism, dating from around the middle of the 17th century, is usually understood as the philosophical outlook which stresses the power of reason over faith, emotion or instinct. This text collects together those figures who have championed the cause of rationalism over three centuries, including theists, pantheists, atheists, materialists, agnostics, secularists, monists, and positivists. It contains not only philosophers but teachers of science, political theorists, historians, and artists. Each entry in the book lists the subject's birth and death dates, details of their education and occupation, and evidence of their rationalist views. European, American and minor figures are included.

This book was released on 1955 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This trusted commentary by Jac J. Müller provides careful expositions of Philippians and Philemon that are characterized by a desire to balance the requirements of exacting scholarship and the need to relate Scripture to personal faith. In treating insightfully and comprehensively these Pauline epistles, Müller first provides essential historical and critical background to each text, including its date and place of origin, its occasion and purpose, and its style, structure, and general themes. The commentaries themselves then proceed through the texts section-by-section, making clear Paul's message both to his original audiences and to readers today. Long included in the widely acclaimed New International Commentary on the New Testament series and now available as an independent work, this volume continues to hold extraordinary value for scholars, pastors, students, and general readers alike. "This is a painstaking and helpful commentary." - The British Weekly Jac J. Müller was professor of New Testament at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. His other books explored themes in New Testament studies and church ministry.

Book excerpt: This monograph, which includes in unchanged or slightly revised form material which has previously appeared in theological journals and elsewhere, defends the thesis that the beginnings of Christian philosophy (represented in the second century by Justin Martyr and Clement of Alexandria) are found in the epistle to the Hebrews. Christian philosophy, in this sense, involves the presentation of Christian teaching in the categories of classical philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated entirely to the interpretation of Paul's Letter to Philemon. The letter is approached from a wide variety of perspectives, thus yielding several new insights into its interpretation. In a first essay the tendencies in the research on the letter since 1980 are outlined. This is followed by essays devoted to the epistolary analysis and to a rhetorical-psychological interpretation of the letter; as well as an essay devoted to the rhetorical function of stylistic form in the letter. After this there are two essays devoted to situating the letter in its ancient context: one views the letter against the background of ancient legal and documentary sources and another one against the background of slavery in early Christianity. The next two essays focus on theological aspects, namely on the letter as ethical counterpart of Paul's doctrine of justification and on the role that love plays in the letter. Three essays focus on ideological issues: the contextual interpretation of the letter in the US, a post-colonial reading of the letter and the letter's legacy of hierarchy and obedience. The volume concludes with four essays on the way in which the letter was interpreted by the some of the Church Fathers: Origen, Jerome, Chrystostom, Augustine and Theodore of Mopsuestia.
