Book Synopsis Iranian Elites and Turkish Rulers by : David Durand-Guedy
Download or read book Iranian Elites and Turkish Rulers written by David Durand-Guedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saljuq period of the eleventh and twelfth centuries saw the arrival in Iran of Türkmen nomads from Central Asia and the beginning of Turkish rule. Through the example of the city of Isfahan, the book analyses the internal evolution of Iranian society in this period and the interaction of the Iranian elites and Turkish rulers. Drawing on an analysis of a wide range of sources, including poetic and epistolary material, this study fills an historiographical gap and casts new light on the two centuries prior to the Mongol invasion. This comprehensive analytical study provides a new contribution to the understanding of many crucial issues: the cultural divide between Western and Eastern Iran; the military potential of city-dwellers; the attitude of the Turkish rulers toward cities and city life; the action of the famous vizier Nizam al-Mulk; the meaning of the Ismaili uprising; and above all the structure of the local elite, organized into rival networks and largely autonomous vis-à-vis state powers. The study is enhanced by a variety of additional features, including extensive genealogical tables, Arabic script and maps. Providing a new understanding of the cultural identity of Iran, this book is an important contribution to the study of the history of Iran and the Medieval period.
Book Synopsis The Iranian Plateau during the Bronze Age by : Collectif
Download or read book The Iranian Plateau during the Bronze Age written by Collectif and published by MOM Éditions. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book compiles a portion of the contributions presented during the symposium “Urbanisation, commerce, subsistence and production during the third millennium BC on the Iranian Plateau”, which took place at the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée in Lyon, the 29-30 of April, 2014. The twenty papers assembled provide an overview of the recent archaeological research on this region of the Middle East during the Bronze Age. The socio-economic transformation from rural villages to towns and nations has prompted many questions into this evolution of urbanisation. What was the impact of interactions between cultures in the Iranian Plateau and the surrounding regions (Mesopotamia, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Indus Valley)? What was the overall context during the Bronze Age on the Iranian Plateau? What was the extent and means of the expansion of the Kuro-Araxe culture? How did the Elamite Kingdom become established? What new knowledge has been contributed by the recent excavations and studies undertaken in the east of Iran? What was the influence of the Indus Valley culture, known as an epicentre of urbanisation in South Asia? What are the unique characteristics of the ancient cultures in Iran? While the urbanisation of early Mesopotamia has been the subject of much debate for several decades, this topic has only recently been raised in respect to the Iranian Plateau. This volume is the product of an international community from Iranian, European, and American institutions, consisting of recognised specialists in the archaeology of the Iranian Bronze Age. It provides an overview of the latest research, including abundant results from current on-going excavations. The current state of archaeological research in Iran, comprising many dynamic questions and perspectives, is presented here in the form of original contributions on the first emergence of towns in the Near and Middle East.

Book Synopsis Droits de l'investisseur étranger et protection de l'environnement by : Sabrina Robert-Cuendet
Download or read book Droits de l'investisseur étranger et protection de l'environnement written by Sabrina Robert-Cuendet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-05-12 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In international investment law, the prism of indirect expropriation includes a broad range of measures – such as regulatory measures – which do not involve a transfer of property but result in a serious interference with an investment. The definition of compensable taking is a very sensitive issue situated at the crossroads between the protection of investors' private rights and the safeguarding of the state's sovereign prerogatives. This book explores, through the example of environmental regulation, the law applicable to this controversial topic. It suggests that the traditional approach – based on an extension of the concept of expropriation – is inappropriate and it contributes to clarifying the scope of the international protection of the investor on the ground of the law of state responsibility.

Download or read book Education in the Muslim World written by Rosarii Griffin and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles is an eclectic selection of studies of a range of educational situations relating to Muslim populations in different parts of the world. It is intended as a selection and in no way contains any overarching theme, other than illustrating the wide diversity of situations and issues relating to education in Muslim societies. The contributors provide a wide and fascinating range of insights and problems, many of which apply to other communities as well; there is much to be shared and celebrated between ‘east’ and ‘west’, but only with greater understanding. It is hoped this book will contribute something towards that understanding.
Book Synopsis Cities of Medieval Iran by : David Durand-Guédy
Download or read book Cities of Medieval Iran written by David Durand-Guédy and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cities of Medieval Iran brings together studies in urban geography, archaeology, and history of medieval Iranian cities, spanning the Islamic period until ca. 1500, but also the pre-Islamic situation. The cities and their inhabitants take centre stage, they are not just the places where something else happened. Urban actors are given priority over external factors. The contributions take a long-term perspective and thus take the interaction between urban centres and their hinterland into account. Many contributions come from history or archaeology, but new disciplines are also methodologically integrated into the study of medieval cities, such as the arts of the book, lexicography, geomorphology, and digital instruments"--

Book Synopsis The Mystery of Contemporary Iran by : Mahnaz Shirali
Download or read book The Mystery of Contemporary Iran written by Mahnaz Shirali and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of how an Islamic dictatorship came to power remains more than thirty years after the Islamic Republic’s inception in Iran. The precise nature of a regime that calls itself both a republic and Islamic but is neither is little understood. The ayatollahs’ unpopularity may have reached unprecedented heights, but their power seems more secure. Such paradoxes weigh heavily and judgments diverge. While public opinion wonders how an archaic theocratic regime could survive so long, some explain it in terms of Iran’s continued modernization and the clergy’s ability to reconcile itself with politics. Understanding the modernization process propelled by the Constitutional Revolution is difficult and raises questions. How and why could ideological Islam continue to dominate Iranian society since the late 1970s? How did it gain power and influence and overcome the reforms molded by the Constitutional Revolution? Mahnaz Shirali analyzes twentieth-century Iranian history to understand the Shiite clergy’s role in a modernized country’s social and political organization. She explains what enabled the clergy to take over prevailing political forces and gain control of the state. Studying Iran’s history for the past one hundred years reveals the force of a religious conservatism opposing political modernity, repelling any attempt at democracy by Iranians, thanks to its constant metamorphoses. Shirali studies the curse of the Shiite clergy on political modernity. It is a convincing, in-depth criticism of the ideological Islam imposed on Iran.

Book Synopsis Making of the Artist in Late Timurid Painting by : Balafrej Lamia Balafrej
Download or read book Making of the Artist in Late Timurid Painting written by Balafrej Lamia Balafrej and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of a tradition of self-portraiture, how could artists signal their presence within a painting? Centred on late Timurid manuscript painting (ca. 1470-1500), this book reveals that pictures could function as the painter's delegate, charged with the task of centring and defining artistic work, even as they did not represent the artist's likeness. Influenced by the culture of the majlis, an institutional gathering devoted to intricate literary performances and debates, late Timurid painters used a number of strategies to shift manuscript painting from an illustrative device to a self-reflective object, designed to highlight the artist's imagination and manual dexterity. These strategies include visual abundance, linear precision, the incorporation of inscriptions addressing aspects of the painting and the artist's signature. Focusing on one of the most iconic manuscripts of the Persianate tradition, the Cairo Bustan made in late Timurid Herat and bearing the signatures of the painter Bihzad, this book explores Persian manuscript painting as a medium for artistic performance and self-representation, a process by which artistic authority was shaped and discussed.
