Book excerpt: La spectroscopie infrarouge a été appliquée à l'étude des premiers états d'hydratation de plusieurs phyllosilicates 2:1, afin de caractériser l'organisation des molécules d'eau aux interfaces. Un montage expérimental mis au point spécialement dans le cadre de cette étude permet de réaliser des spectres IR en transmission sur des échantillons en film mince (1,3 mg) maintenu in situ à température et pression de vapeur d'eau contrôlées. L'examen du massif des vibrations de déformations des molécules d'eau, en particulier par décomposition graphique des spectres expérimentaux, permet de distinguer jusqu'à trois populations de molécules d'eau différentes. La comparaison entre des smectites comportant des cations compensateurs de nature différente, et (ou) des localisations de déficit de charge différentes, permet de confirmer l'influence des paramètres suivants sur l'organisation des premières molécules d'eau adsorbées, par ordre d'importance : 1. le pouvoir polarisant du cation compensateur, 2. le caractère auto-associatif des molécules d'eau par liaison hydrogène et leur dissociation, 3. la charge de la maille cristalline et la localisation des substitutions isomorphiques. La surface du feuillet n'est jamais à l'origine de l'hydratation des smectites, et des interactions sont possibles entre les molécules d'eau et les oxygènes basaux seulement en présence de substitutions tétraédriques. Par ailleurs, la localisation du cation compensateur permet d'expliquer l'évolution des vibrations des hydroxyles de la couche octaédrique. En outre, Les résultats acquis dans cette étude mettent en évidence la nécessité de prendre en compte dans les simulations numériques, la flexibilité et la dissociation des molécules d'eau aux interfaces.

Des états de traction de l'eau jusqu'à -1400 baront été mesurés de façon spécifique dans des micro-inclusions intracristallines. La nucléation devapeur (Tn) marque le retour à l'équilibre. Les effets destructeurs liés à la rupture d'états transitoiresd'eau tensile sont observés dans le milieu naturel : explosions phréato-magmatiques, geysers.Modéliser la cinétique de l'eau métastable est fondamental pour gérer les risques qui lui sontassociés. Des inclusions fluides synthétiques (IF) de composition et de densité connues, piégées dansdu quartz, ont été placées dans le champ métastable par refroidissement isochore et leurs gammesde métastabilité ont été mesurées. On montre que la traction maximale de l'eau dans chaque IFdépend de son volume et de sa forme, de la méthode de synthèse de l'IF, de la chimie des solutionsoccluses. Des expériences de durée de vie ont été ensuite réalisées sur des IF placées de 0,5° à10°C au-dessus de leurs Tn. Les 8 IF choisies rende nt compte de la diversité des formes, desvolumes, des densités et gammes de traction observées. Les résultats montrent que la durée de viede l'eau tensile en IF est d'autant plus courte que la traction de l'eau est plus forte. Une loiempirique est proposée qui permet de calculer la durée de vie de la métastabilité pour chaque IF deTn et volume fixés. Par ailleurs, nos données peuvent être rendues compatibles avec la ThéorieClassique de la Nucléation. Nos résultats montrent que l'eau dans les réservoirs poreux naturels peutrester métastable pendant des durées géologiques et ainsi, contrôler les interactions fluides-rochesdans la croûte.

Commercial flow sheeting simulation software is increasingly available and is used in the early steps of process design in industry. As to this, more sophisticated and precise models based on activities instead of concentrations should be used. After an introductory chapter there is in Chapter 2 an intensive discussion of reactive phase equilibria of ionic and non-ionic solutes based on chemical potentials. Chapter 3 introduces to multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer. However, the main focus is on the reactive mass transfer on rigid and mobile surfaces where the interfacial reaction, molecular diffusion and adsorption layers are decisive. The respective extraction of zinc with a cation exchanger and of acetic acid with an anion exchanger is discussed as case studies. Since adsorption layers and surfactants have a major impact on liquid-liquid extraction efficiency, the final chapter reviews several tech niques which make use of polymeric species in an extractive process. A short review is also given on extraction apparatus and the hydrodynamics (hydraulic design, droplet populance balances) of columns. Much of the booklet is based on the PhD works of C. Czapla (2000), G. Modes (2000), H. Klocker (1996), T. Kronberger (1995), M. Marters (2000), M. Roos (2000), M. Traving (2000) and B.
