Book excerpt: Ce travail consiste a étudier expérimentalement les déformations permanentes et les déformations réversibles de graves non traitées (GNT) vis-à-vis des changements hydriques associés aux conditions climatiques. Dans la pratique, afin de dimensionner les structures de chaussées, différents guides de dimensionnement proposent une méthode rationnelle utilisant, pour les propriétés des matériaux, le module d'Young et le coefficient de Poisson. Ces paramètres sont généralement déterminés en termes de contraintes totales. Ainsi, l'objectif est de pouvoir trouver des pressions négatives et aussi de les prendre en compte dans l'analyse en termes de contraintes effectives. Quatre types de GNT ont été utilisés: un de référence Français et les autres Colombiens. L'utilisation de ces derniers, qui ne satisfont pas les recommandations internationales, est justifiée par la comparaison des résultats obtenus avec ceux de référence. Différents essais on été réalisés entre autres: essais triaxiaaux de précision en petites et grandes déformations avec mesure de succion, détermination des courbes d'humidification. Ces essais ont mis en évidence l'influence du pourcentage de fines, de l'indice de plasticité, de la valeur de bleu de méthylène, de la teneur en eau et du rôle de la succion sur la valeur des modules en petites déformations et les caractéristiques en grandes déformations. Les résultats ont été interprétés en contraintes totales et effectives en utilisant différentes approches pour le calcul des contraintes effectives, validées par des essais sur des matériaux secs. Ce travail montre l'importance de ces aspects dans la construction et le dimensionnement des chaussées.

Book excerpt: Le comportement des matériaux granulaires est souvent décrit à partir des modèles basés sur la théorie des milieux continus. Néamoins certains aspects de ce comportement ne s'expliquent qu'à partir des phénomènes locaux de nature tout à fait discontinue. Une autre approche pour décrire le comportement mécanique des matériaux granulaires est basée sur les mécanismes locaux (forces et déplacements), elle est dite approche micromécanique. L'une des étapes importantes de cette approche est de décrire les forces de contact à partir des contraintes dans le milieu (localisation statique). L'objet de ce travail est de répondre à cet objectif en établissant une expression permettant de définir la distribution des forces de contact pour un milieu formé de particules cylindriques ou sphériques dans un arrangement quelconque. Après avoir proposé l'expression des forces de contact et en écrivant les conditions locales d'instabilité, un critère de plasticité global a été proposé. La validation de l'expression proposée nécessite des informations au niveau des contacts et des particules. Les méthodes expérimentales sont souvent incapables de fournir de telles informations, aussi les simulations numériques sont apparues comme un moyen expérimental performant. Parmi les méthodes de simulation numérique discrète la méthode des éléments discrets s'est imposée ces dernières années. Cette méthode est basée sur les lois du mouvement de corps rigides et les lois de contact des particules. Les simulations effectuées sur des assemblages polydisperses de 1000 particules cylindriques et sphériques montrent que le comportement simulé est représentatif des milieux granulaires réels. La comparaison des distributions de forces de contact obtenues par simulation numérique et celles obtenues à partir de l'expression analytique proposée montre une bonne concordance.
