Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CETTE THESE A PORTE SUR L'ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE DE L'INTERACTION ENTRE LES IONS MULTICHARGES ET UNE SURFACE. LORS DE CETTE INTERACTION, UN GRAND NOMBRE DE PARTICULES SECONDAIRES EST EMIS : ELECTRONS LENTS, ELECTRONS RAPIDES, IONS POSITIFS ET NEGATIFS, PARTICULES NEUTRES ET PHOTONS. ON A MIS AU POINT UN NOUVEAU MULTIDETECTEUR HEMISPHERIQUE A BASE DES GALETTES DE MICROCANAUX QUI PERMET DE COLLECTER L'ENSEMBLE DE CES PARTICULES SECONDAIRES. SIMULTANEMENT LES PROJECTILES REFLECHIS SONT RECUS SUR UN DETECTEUR SENSIBLE EN POSITION. ON PEUT INTERCALER DANS LE CONE DE DIFFUSION UNE FENTE SUIVIE D'UN ANALYSEUR ELECTROSTATIQUE POUR ETUDIER LA DISTRIBUTION EN CHARGE DES PROJECTILES REFLECHIS. L'EXPERIENCE CONSISTE ALORS A DETERMINER LES CORRELATIONS ENTRE LES DIFFERENTES PARTICULES EMISES GRACE A UNE METHODE DE DETECTION EN COINCIDENCE MULTIPLE. ON PEUT AINSI DETERMINER LE NOMBRE D'ELECTRONS SECONDAIRES EN FONCTION DE L'ETAT CHARGE DU PROJECTILE. ON A AUSSI ETUDIE LA CORRELATION ENTRE LES ELECTRONS AUGER ET LES ELECTRONS LENTS EMIS ET ON A DETERMINE, D'UNE PART, L'EFFICACITE DE DETECTION, ET D'AUTRE PART LA CONTRIBUTION D'ELECTRONS LENTS PROVOQUES PAR D'IMPACT D'ELECTRONS AUGER. DE MEME LA CORRELATION ENTRE LE NOMBRE D'ELECTRONS SECONDAIRES ET LA TRAJECTOIRE DES IONS REFLECHIS DETECTES PAR LE DETECTEUR SENSIBLE A LA POSITION MONTRE QUE L'EFFET DE CANALISATION DE SURFACE ET LE NOMBRE D'ELECTRONS SECONDAIRES SONT RELIES PAR LA PENETRATION DU PROJECTILE DANS L'AXE DE CANALISATION.

Book excerpt: Ions are atoms or molecules stripped of their electrons, so they can be accelerated by electric fields. They can be made to hit each other with low energy, intermediate energy, high energy, or very high energy; each energy range seeks to investigate different aspects of hadronic physics. Intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions explore the nuclei far from stability valley, the incompressibility of nuclear matter, the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear environment, the symmetry energy far from the normal density, and other phenomena. This has been an active field of research for last four decades. This is a book for entrants in the field. It is suitable as a companion book in a graduate course. For practitioners in the field it will be useful as a reference.

Book excerpt: It is generally believed that doing science means accumulating empirical data with no or little reference to the interpretation of the data based on the scientist’s th- retical framework or presuppositions. Holton (1969a) has deplored the widely accepted myth (experimenticism) according to which progress in science is presented as the inexorable result of the pursuit of logically sound conclusions from un- biguous experimental data. Surprisingly, some of the leading scientists themselves (Millikan is a good example) have contributed to perpetuate the myth with respect to modern science being essentially empirical, that is carefully tested experim- tal facts (free of a priori conceptions), leading to inductive generalizations. Based on the existing knowledge in a field of research a scientist formulates the guiding assumptions (Laudan et al. , 1988), presuppositions (Holton, 1978, 1998) and “hard core” (Lakatos, 1970) of the research program that constitutes the imperative of presuppositions, which is not abandoned in the face of anomalous data. Laudan and his group consider the following paraphrase of Kant by Lakatos as an important guideline: philosophy of science without history of science is empty. Starting in the 1960s, this “historical school” has attempted to redraw and replace the positivist or logical empiricist image of science that dominated for the first half of the twentieth century. Among other aspects, one that looms large in these studies is that of “guiding assumptions” and has considerable implications for the main thesis of this monograph (Chapter 2).

Book excerpt: This book offers a new perspective on Niels Bohr's interpretation of quantum mechanics as complementarity, and on the relationships between physics and philosophy in Bohr's work. The importance of quantum field theory for Bohr's thinking has not been adequately addressed in the literature on Bohr. This book provides clarification of Bohr's writings (which usually pose problems of reading), and an analysis of the role of quantum field theory in Bohr's thinking.
