Book excerpt: This book presents papers from the International Gear Conference 2014, held in Lyon, 26th-28th August 2014. Mechanical transmission components such as gears, rolling element bearings, CVTs, belts and chains are present in every industrial sector and over recent years, increasing competitive pressure and environmental concerns have provided an impetus for cleaner, more efficient and quieter units. Moreover, the emergence of relatively new applications such as wind turbines, hybrid transmissions and jet engines has led to even more severe constraints. The main objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the most recent advances, addressing the challenges in modern mechanical transmissions. The conference proceedings address all aspects of gear and power transmission technology and range of applications (aerospace, automotive, wind turbine, and others) including topical issues such as power losses and efficiency, gear vibrations and noise, lubrication, contact failures, tribo-dynamics and nano transmissions. - A truly international contribution with more than 120 papers from all over the world - A judicious balance between fundamental research and industrial concerns - Participation of the most respected international experts in the field of gearing - A wide range of applications in terms of size, power, speed, and industrial sector

Book excerpt: Why don't we always obey warnings? In discussing a wide range of issues in behavioural research of warnings, this book takes the view that a warning is but one piece of information which we take into account in deciding what - or what not - to do. This view leads the authors to the positions that warnings should be matched in their urgency to the urgency of the situation they warn about. Auditory, visual, written and symbolic warnings are discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: Arien Mack and Irvin Rock make the radical claim that there is no conscious perception of the visual world without attention to it. Many people believe that merely by opening their eyes, they see everything in their field of view; in fact, a line of psychological research has been taken as evidence of the existence of so-called preattentional perception. In Inattentional Blindness, Arien Mack and Irvin Rock make the radical claim that there is no such thing -- that there is no conscious perception of the visual world without attention to it. The authors present a narrative chronicle of their research. Thus, the reader follows the trail that led to the final conclusions, learning why initial hypotheses and explanations were discarded or revised, and how new questions arose along the way. The phenomenon of inattentional blindness has theoretical importance for cognitive psychologists studying perception, attention, and consciousness, as well as for philosophers and neuroscientists interested in the problem of consciousness.

Although voice is an important communication tool, it is more than that: it is something which reflects human identity. The need for speech and voice is growing in spite of increasing technology applications; even instruments and technical equipment are guided by voice. The number of people having voice problems is increasing, which implies that voice does not always function according to the speakers’ needs. Voice ergonomics has been developed for improving voice health and care. This book offers background knowledge and concrete guidelines on how to improve communication environments and practices for decreasing voice loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 25 years since the first studies concerning RR interval variability in cardiac patients were published, heart rate variability has become a field of wide interest. The aim of this text is to provide a comprehensive overview of heart rate variability, reflecting the range and complexity of this dynamic field, to guide the scientific and professional community, and also to address the need for clinical standards and future research ideas. In order to prevent erroneous conclusions and unfounded extrapolations, efforts have been made to standardise nomenclature, methods for measurement, clinical applications etc. This text attempts to expand on the framework set forth by the joint European Society of Cadiology and North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology Task Force, covering facets of the field in greater detail. The editors have assembled a team of leaders in the international arena of cardiology, reflecting all aspects of the field; mathematical, engineering, physiological and clinical, to produce a volume which will be valuable to all those participating in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rate variability.

Book excerpt: Neuroergonomics: The Brain at Work and in Everyday Life details the methodologies that are useful for keeping an ideal human-machine system up-to-date, along with information on how to prevent potential overload and minimize errors. It discusses neural measures and the proper methods and technologies to maximize performance, thus providing a resource for neuroscientists who want to learn more about the technologies and real-time tools that can help them assess cognitive and motivational states of human operators and close the loop for advanced human-machine interaction. With the advent of new and improved tools that allow monitoring of brain activity in the field and better identification of neurophysiological markers that can index impending overload or fatigue, this book is a timely resource on the topic. - Includes neurobiological models to better understand risky decision-making and cognitive countermeasures, augmented cognition, and brain stimulations to enhance performance and mitigate human error - Features innovative methodologies and protocols using psychophysiological measurements and brain imaging techniques in realistic operational settings - Discusses numerous topics, including cognitive performance in psychological and neurological disorders, brain computer interfaces (BCI), and human performance monitoring in ecological conditions, virtual reality, and serious gaming

Book excerpt: Presenting research from four countries, this special issue represents a cross-section of aviation-related research utilizing psychophysiological methods. With a primary focus on pilot workload and fatigue, the articles represent both research and test and evaluation environments. The research reported covers a wide range of psychophysiological measures consisting of indications of cardiac activity (ECG), eye movements and blinks (EOG), brain activity (EEG), electrodermal activity (EDA), respiration changes, blood pressure fluctuations, and cortisol levels. Overall, the articles characterize the state of the art in flight psychophysiology and indicate how psychophysiological information may help improve the safety and efficiency of future flight operations.
