Book excerpt: CETTE THESE VIENT REPONDRE AUX PROBLEMES TROUVES PAR LES DEVELOPPEURS LOGICIELS QUI VEULENT IMPLEMENTER UNE INTERFACE HOMME-MACHINE DESTINEE AUX HANDICAPES VISUELS. CES INTERFACES N'OBEISSENT PAS AUX PRINCIPES ET REGLES DE DEVELOPPEMENT DES INTERFACES GRAPHIQUES CLASSIQUES. IL FAUT ENTRE AUTRES PRENDRE EN COMPTE L'UTILISATION DE PERIPHERIQUES DIFFERENTS, DONC UNE GESTION D'EVENEMENTS DIFFERENTE ; L'UTILISATION DE METAPHORES DIFFERENTES, DE PRINCIPES DIFFERENTS. TOUT CECI DEVRAIT ETRE PRIS EN COMPTE PAR L'EDITEUR CHOISI POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT. CE QUI N'EST MALHEUREUSEMENT PAS LE CAS. DANS CETTE THESE NOUS PROPOSONS LA REALISATION D'UN TEL EDITEUR. UNE ETUDE EST FAITE CONCERNANT LES INTERFACES NON VISUELLES ET LES METHODES D'INTERACTION NON VISUELLES (MULTIMEDIA, MULTIMODALITE), POUR DETERMINER TOUS LES BESOINS DE CET EDITEUR. ENSUITE, LA FAISABILITE N'ETANT PAS MISE EN DOUTE, UNE SPECIFICATION ET DES METHODES DE CONCEPTION SONT PROPOSEES. UNE ETUDE DE CAS PRATIQUE EST DONNEE POUR EXEMPLE.

Book excerpt: Advances in Systems, Computing Sciences and Software Engineering This book includes the proceedings of the International Conference on Systems, Computing Sciences and Software Engineering (SCSS’05). The proceedings are a set of rigorously reviewed world-class manuscripts addressing and detailing state-of-the-art research projects in the areas of computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, systems sciences and engineering, information technology, parallel and distributed computing and web-based programming. SCSS’05 was part of the International Joint Conferences on Computer, Information, and Systems Sciences, and Engineering (CISSE’05) (www. cisse2005. org), the World’s first Engineering/Computing and Systems Research E-Conference. CISSE’05 was the first high-caliber Research Conference in the world to be completely conducted online in real-time via the internet. CISSE’05 received 255 research paper submissions and the final program included 140 accepted papers, from more than 45 countries. The concept and format of CISSE’05 were very exciting and ground-breaking. The PowerPoint presentations, final paper manuscripts and time schedule for live presentations over the web had been available for 3 weeks prior to the start of the conference for all registrants, so they could choose the presentations they want to attend and think about questions that they might want to ask. The live audio presentations were also recorded and were part of the permanent CISSE archive, which also included all power point presentations and papers. SCSS’05 provided a virtual forum for presentation and discussion of the state-of the-art research on Systems, Computing Sciences and Software Engineering.

Book excerpt: LES PROGRES RAPIDES DE L'INFORMATIQUE SUR DIVERS PLANS, PUISSANCE DES MACHINES, QUALITE ERGONOMIQUE DES INTERFACES HOMME-MACHINE ONT CONDUIT AU DEVELOPPEMENT D'ENSEMBLES D'OUTILS PUISSANTS. CES OUTILS PERMETTENT LE PROTOTYPAGE, L'EVALUATION, ET LA MODIFICATION RAPIDE DU CODE DE L'APPLICATIONS POUR ABOUTIR A DES PRODUITS LOGICIELS LES PLUS FIABLES POSSIBLES. LA PART DU CODE CONSACREE A L'INTERFACE HOMME-ORDINATEUR ETANT DE PLUS EN PLUS IMPORTANTE, IL N'EST PAS ETONNANT QUE CES OUTILS COMPORTENT DES FONCTIONNALITES TRES EVOLUEES POUR LA CREATION ET L'EDITION D'INTERFACES GRAPHIQUES NORMALISEES. CEPENDANT LES METHODES DE COMMUNICATION PROPOSEES PAR LES INTERFACES GRAPHIQUES STANDARDS - QUI REPOSENT SUR TROIS DISPOSITIFS PRINCIPAUX, L'ECRAN, LA SOURIS ET LE CLAVIER - NE CONVIENNENT PAS A TOUS LES UTILISATEURS NI A TOUTES LES CONDITIONS D'UTILISATION DES APPLICATIONS. QUE L'UTILISATEUR NE PUISSE UTILISER L'UN DE CES DISPOSITIFS ET L'APPLICATION DEVIENT INUTILISABLE. CETTE THESE DECRIT UNE REFLEXION PORTANT SUR LA MISE EN UVRE DES TECHNIQUES DEVELOPPEES EN GENIE LOGICIEL, DANS LE DOMAINE DE LA CONCEPTION D'INTERFACES D'INTERACTION HOMME-MACHINE A L'INTENTION D'HANDICAPES VISUELS. L'OBJECTIF EST DE PERMETTRE A CETTE POPULATION D'UTILISATEURS D'ACCEDER AUX APPLICATIONS INFORMATIQUES DESTINEES AU GRAND PUBLIC, NOTAMMENT CELLES DEVELOPPEES AUTOUR D'INTERNET. LES REFLEXIONS ET LES PROPOSITIONS CONCERNANT L'ARCHITECTURE LOGICIELLE DE TELLES QUE LES INTERFACES ET LES MODALITES D'INTERACTION HOMME-MACHINE A METTRE EN UVRE SONT VALIDEES PAR DEUX REALISATIONS LOGICIELLES DEVELOPPEES DANS LE CADRE DE DEUX PROJETS, L'UN EUROPEEN, L'AUTRE NATIONAL ; LA PREMIERE APPLICATION CONCERNE L'UTILISATION D'UN TELEPHONNE A ECRAN POUR ACCEDER AUX SERVICES TELEPHONIQUES TEL QUE LE MINITEL EN FRANCE ET LA SECONDE TOUCHE LE DOMAINE D'ACCES A INTERNET.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book excerpt: Leading international artists and art educators consider the challenges of art education in today's dramatically changed art world. The last explosive change in art education came nearly a century ago, when the German Bauhaus was formed. Today, dramatic changes in the art world—its increasing professionalization, the pervasive power of the art market, and fundamental shifts in art-making itself in our post-Duchampian era—combined with a revolution in information technology, raise fundamental questions about the education of today's artists. Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century) brings together more than thirty leading international artists and art educators to reconsider the practices of art education in academic, practical, ethical, and philosophical terms. The essays in the book range over continents, histories, traditions, experiments, and fantasies of education. Accompanying the essays are conversations with such prominent artist/educators as John Baldessari, Michael Craig-Martin, Hans Haacke, and Marina Abramovic, as well as questionnaire responses from a dozen important artists—among them Mike Kelley, Ann Hamilton, Guillermo Kuitca, and Shirin Neshat—about their own experiences as students. A fascinating analysis of the architecture of major historical art schools throughout the world looks at the relationship of the principles of their designs to the principles of the pedagogy practiced within their halls. And throughout the volume, attention is paid to new initiatives and proposals about what an art school can and should be in the twenty-first century—and what it shouldn't be. No other book on the subject covers more of the questions concerning art education today or offers more insight into the pressures, challenges, risks, and opportunities for artists and art educators in the years ahead. Contributors Marina Abramovic, Dennis Adams, John Baldessari, Ute Meta Bauer, Daniel Birnbaum, Saskia Bos, Tania Bruguera, Luis Camnitzer, Michael Craig-Martin, Thierry de Duve, Clémentine Deliss, Charles Esche, Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Hans Haacke, Ann Lauterbach, Ken Lum, Steven Henry Madoff, Brendan D. Experience Design brings together leading international scholars to provide a cross-section of critical thinking and professional practice within this emerging field. Contributors writing from theoretical, empirical and applied design perspectives address the meaning of 'experience'; draw on case studies to explore ways in which specific 'experiences' can be designed; examine which methodologies and practices are employed in this process; and consider how experience design interrelates with other academic and professional disciplines. Chapters are grouped into thematic sections addressing positions, objectives and environments, and interactions and performances, with individual case studies addressing a wide range of experiences, including urban spaces, the hospital patient, museum visitors, mobile phone users, and music festival and restaurant goers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information overload, the shallows, weapons of mass distraction, the googlization of minds: countless commentators condemn the flood of images and information that dooms us to a pathological attention deficit. In this new book, cultural theorist Yves Citton goes against the tide of these standard laments to offer a new perspective on the problem of attention in the digital age. Phrases like paying attention and investing ones attention attest to our mistaken belief that attention can be conceptualized in narrow economic terms. We are constantly drawn towards attempts to quantify and commodify attention, even down to counting the number of 'likes' a picture receives on Facebook or a video on YouTube. By contrast, Citton argues that we should conceptualize attention as a kind of ecology and examine how the many different environments to which we are exposed – from advertising to literature, search engines to performance art – condition our attention in different ways. In a world where the demands on our attention are ever-increasing, this timely and original book will be of great interest to students and scholars in media and communications and in literary and cultural studies, and to anyone concerned about the long-term consequences of the profusion of images as well as digital content in the age of the internet.

Book excerpt: Kinetic art not only includes movement but often depends on it to produce an intended effect and therefore fully realize its nature as art. It can take a multiplicity of forms and include a wide range of motion, from motorized and electrically driven movement to motion as the result of wind, light, or other sources of energy. Kinetic art emerged throughout the twentieth century and had its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s. Professionals responsible for conserving contemporary art are in the midst of rethinking the concept of authenticity and solving the dichotomy often felt between original materials and functionality of the work of art. The contrast is especially acute with kinetic art when a compromise between the two often seems impossible. Also to be considered are issues of technological obsolescence and the fact that an artist’s chosen technology often carries with it strong sociological and historical information and meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, thousands of new memorials to executed witches, victims of terrorism, and dead astronauts, along with those that pay tribute to civil rights, organ donors, and the end of Communism have dotted the American landscape. Equally ubiquitous, though until now less the subject of serious inquiry, are temporary memorials: spontaneous offerings of flowers and candles that materialize at sites of tragic and traumatic death. In Memorial Mania, Erika Doss argues that these memorials underscore our obsession with issues of memory and history, and the urgent desire to express—and claim—those issues in visibly public contexts. Doss shows how this desire to memorialize the past disposes itself to individual anniversaries and personal grievances, to stories of tragedy and trauma, and to the social and political agendas of diverse numbers of Americans. By offering a framework for understanding these sites, Doss engages the larger issues behind our culture of commemoration. Driven by heated struggles over identity and the politics of representation, Memorial Mania is a testament to the fevered pitch of public feelings in America today.
