Sur des photos de visages traitées avec des filtres de fréquences spatiales, les détails sont perçus à l'aide des hautes fréquences et la configuration est perçue grâce aux basses fréquences. Dans l'autisme, des auteurs défendent l'hypothèse d'un déficit de vision configurale (globale), au profit de la vision des détails. Dans notre étude, 17 enfants témoins et 17 enfants autistes de haut niveau ont dû catégoriser des visages selon l'identité, le genre et l'expression faciale. Les enfants autistes ont plus utilisé les hautes fréquences que les témoins pour reconnaître l'identité et l'expression. Cependant, comme les témoins, ils ont utilisé les basses fréquences pour reconnaître le genre. Ce résultat contredit l'hypothèse d'un défaut de perception visuelle de l'information configurale dans l'autisme et est en faveur d'une perception atypique mais non déficitaire.

Book excerpt: Dans la littérature, les descriptions cliniques des troubles envahissants du développement font état des difficultés des patients à reconnaître les émotions, en lien avec un déficit fonctionnel dans les interactions sociales. L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer les aptitudes d’enfants autistes de haut niveau et Asperger à traiter des stimuli neutres (visages, mots) et des stimuli hautement émotionnels (expressions faciales et vocalisations) en situation unimodale et intermodale visuelle et verbale. Nous avons présenté aux sujets un protocole informatisé, constitué des trois épreuves neutres (d’apprentissage) et de trois épreuves émotionnelles (de jugement). Une épreuve d’évaluation clinique du niveau pragmatique du langage complétait ce protocole. Les résultats en apprentissage de stimuli neutres indiquent, chez ces enfants autistes, des performances qualitativement similaires à celles des enfants contrôles. Le traitement perceptif est plus efficient dans la modalité auditive. Dans l’épreuve de jugement émotionnel, les scores des autistes sont équivalents à ceux de la population témoin. Les émotions sont traitées de manière aussi efficace, en contexte unimodal (visuel et auditif) qu’en condition intermodale.

Although typical aging does not cause low vision, four major causes of vision impairment are directly related to the aging process: (1) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), (2) diabetic retinopathy, (3) glaucoma, and (4) cataracts. Instances of these impairments are expected to double by the year 2050, making low vision a significant public health issue. This Practice Guideline includes occupational therapy assessment and intervention guidelines for older adults who have visual acuity impairments, visual field impairments, or both as a result of a low vision diagnosis. Screening, referral, and evaluation are covered for clients for central visual field impairments, such as AMD and cataract; peripheral field impairments, such as glaucoma, hemianopsia, and quadrantanopsia; and mixed visual field loss, such as diabetic retinopathy.
