Book excerpt: Cette thèse regroupe trois sujets distincts, mais qui portent tous sur des systèmes polymères. Le premier est centré sur la question de la longueur de persistance lp d'un polymère cristal liquide à chaînes latérales en peigne (PCLP). Il a pour origine une étude effectuée sur un PCLP à l'état de fondu montrant que lp a une valeur pratiquement identique à celle du polymère "nu" correspondant. Cette observation surprenante nous a conduit à réaliser des expériences de diffusion de neutrons aux petits angles sur des solutions diluées de PCLP. Les résultats obtenus montrent que lp augmente significativement lorsque le taux de groupes latéraux greffés augmente. La comparaison de ces résultats à ceux obtenus sur le fondu indique que la longueur de persistance dépend des interactions intra-chaîne et inter-chaîne. Les deux autres sujets concernent les propriétés rhéologiques en géométrie confinée d'un gel physique polymère et d'un fondu de polymères chargé par des particules solides. L'étude sur le gel physique, menée sur un gel de polychlorure de vinyle (PVC), a pour but de déterminer les effets du confinement et du vieillissement sur les propriétés mécaniques du gel. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les modèles de percolation ne s'appliquent pas, et qu'il existe une équivalence entre vieillissement et confinement du gel. La dernière étude a été menée sur un fondu de polydiméthylsiloxane (PDMS), chargé par des particules de silice. Elle a pour but de déterminer les effets du confinement sur les propriétés mécaniques de ce système. Les résultats obtenus montrent que sa réponse basse fréquence passe d'un comportement d'écoulement à un comportement élastique lorsque l'épaisseur de l'échantillon diminue. Les expériences effectuées en fonction de la température et de la concentration en silice suggèrent que deux effets participent à la réponse élastique : l'un est dû à la percolation des amas de particules de silice, l'autre à la présence d'amas pré-vitreux dans le fondu.

Book excerpt: La biréfringence induite par cisaillement dans la phase isotrope des polymères cristaux liquides en peigne (PCLP), est un phénomène non-linéaire associé à de longs temps de relaxation, et bien que spectaculaire, il ne peut être expliqué ni par un couplage du cisaillement avec le temps de vie des fluctuations d'orientation prétransitionnelles, ni avec le temps terminal viscoélastique. Les descriptions conventionnelles sont incompatibles avec le phénomène. En contrôlant les propriétés interfaciales, nous montrons que la réponse rhéologique des PCLP est fondamentalement différente de l'écoulement habituellement décrit à basses fréquences : le fondu présente une élasticité prédominante qui, observée loin de toutes transitions, n'est ni due aux propriétés mésomorphes, ni à la dynamique prétransitionnelle. L'analyse des propriétés dynamiques de polymères ordinaires, amorphes, enchevêtrés ou pas confirme que cette élasticité est une propriété générique. A faible épaisseur et à faible déformation, l'élasticité intrinsèque est mesurée. Elle augmente, puis sature à une valeur coïncidant avec la hauteur du plateau caoutchoutique, au delà d'une masse moléculaire critique coïncidant avec la définition du régime enchevêtré.
