Book excerpt: Les télécommunications ont été marquées pendant la fin des années 90 par le développement des transmissions par fibre optique. L'amplificateur à fibre dopée erbium (EDFA) s'est imposé comme la référence pour régénérer le signal dans les transmissions longue distance. Bien que son utilisation se soit généralisée, des questions restent sans réponse comme par exemple l'origine des pertes de rendement et la limitation du gain dans la bande spectrale longue L (1570 -1610 nm). En effet, d'une part, il a été remarqué que l'augmentation de concentration n'entraîne pas la même variation de gain, limitant le développement d'amplificateurs courts ; d'autre part, la bande L est limitée du coté des grandes longueurs. Nous avons expliqué l'origine du premier problème par le phénomène d'Addition de Photons par Transfert d'Energie (APTE). En étudiant le comportement des déclins de fluorescence en fonction de la puissance d'excitation, nous avons pu mettre en évidence et quantifier l'APTE homogène, entre ions erbium statistiquement distribués. Cela a permis de classer les matrices entre elles et d'expliquer une partie de la baisse de rendement. Les expériences d'absorption non saturable nous ont permis de quantifier à la fois l'APTE inhomogène (distribution inhomogène des ions dopants suggérant la présence de paires) et l'APTE homogène. La perte de rendement liée à la concentration a ainsi pu être totalement expliquée par ces deux phénomènes. Enfin, les expériences d'absorption et d'excitation dans l'état excité (ESA et EEE) ont permis d'expliciter les causes de la limitation spectrale de la bande L suivant les matrices. Une étude théorique basée sur une détermination des niveaux Stark des niveaux 4I15/2, 4I13/2 et 4I9/2 a confirmé les résultats obtenus expérimentalement

Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed.
