The intent of the ARW was to assess the current state of knowledge in "Unsaturated Flow" and its use in "Hydrologic Modeling Practice". In a sense the interest in fundamentals of unsaturated flow in this ARW was not just for the sake of knowledge but also and primarily for the sake of action. L'activité bactérienne dans la zone non saturée profonde a été quantifiée par incubations en batch. Les concentrations en solutés anioniques dans la nappe sont très stables en profondeur et très variables en surface. La zone de fluctuation de nappe est une zone active de mélange. Les modèles classiques de transfert ne permettent pas de reproduire cette caractéristique. Nous proposons une représentation du milieu à l’aide de deux compartiments de porosité mobile, un lent et un rapide. L'activation alternée de ces deux compartiments en régime de fluctuation de nappe augmente la dispersion. Un troisième compartiment de porosité immobile serait le lieu d’une dénitrification dans la zone non saturée profonde.

Le plus souvent, les teneurs sont maximales en hiver et diminuent en été. Des cycles saisonniers inverses ou intermédiaires sont également observés. Ce travail a permis d'identifier, par le biais d'approches expérimentales de terrain et de modélisation hydrologiques, les processus hydrologiques et hydrochimiques impliqués dans les variations saisonnières des teneurs en nitrate. Il a été mis en oeuvre que deux bassins versants armoricains (Kerbernez et Kerrien). La combinaison des différents résultats obtenus montre comment le comportement hydrologique des bassins versants, ainsi que les caractéristiques physiques (taille des compartiments, teneur en argile, conductivité hydraulique) et chimiques (distribution spatiale des teneurs en nitrate) du milieu peuvent conditionner la contribution relative des différents réservoirs, conduisant à l'obtention de différents types de cycles saisonniers.
