Cet effet connu serait à la base d'un nouveau type de capteur à fibre optique mettant en jeu l'absorption à ondes évanescentes. Pour sa réalisation, une partie de la gaine de la fibre est dénudée et remplacée par un milieu absorbant. La lumière est injectée à un bout de la fibre et détectée à l'autre bout de la fibre. La technique spectroscopique par diode laser peut être appliquée aux capteurs à fibre optique. Les lasers à diode constituent des sources accordables en fréquence. Pour obtenir cette fréquence d'émission, il faut agir sur les paramètres qui déterminent le gap d'énergie entre les niveaux de la transition. La fréquence d'émission des diodes laser peut être contrôlée sur une plage spectrale par variation de la température de fonctionnement, ou sur une région spectrale plus fine en variant le courant d'injection. Il existe une variété de méthodes spectroscopiques par diodes laser pour détecter de faibles concentrations de gaz. Nous utilisons la méthode de spectroscopie par modulation de fréquence. La fréquence d'émission du laser est donc soumise à deux variations, l'une correspond au balayage lent de la raie d'absorption par injection d'un courant en dent de scie de fréquence de l'ordre du Hz, l'autre étant une modulation sinusoïdale rapide par injection d'un courant sinusoïdal de fréquence de l'ordre du kHz. La forme du signal obtenu dépend de la forme de la raie d'absorption étudiée et de l'amplitude de modulation. La mesure à la sortie du détecteur se fait sur la fréquence de la modulation sinusoïdale. Le signal mesuré est relié à la variation de la puissance avec la longueur d'onde. Nous décrivons dans ce mémoire les différentes démarches de construction du dispositif spectroscopique par diode laser, puis son couplage à la fibre optique capteur. Des spectres d'absorption pour la vapeur d'eau ont permit de montrer les possibilités du système

Ce régime d'opération est obtenu en introduisant une modulation de phase intracavité dont la fréquence de modulation est proche de la séparation fréquentielle des modes longitudinaux. Entièrement original dans les lasers à fibre, ce régime d'opération a permis de démonter un laser accordable dont le spectre possède une largeur de raie ajustable et un profil quasi gaussien. L'élargissement spectral varie de manière inversement proportionnelle à la déviation de la fréquence de modulation par rapport à la fréquence axiale. A partir d'un cadre théorique développé, la forme effective de raie (i.e. le profil spectral) peut quant à elle être sélectionnée à travers la forme de la modulation fréquentielle. La modulation de phase a été introduite dans la cavité à l'aide de trois schémas de modulation : introduction d'un modulateur de phase, introduction d'un modulateur d'amplitude ou modulation directe du courant d'injection du SOA. Des études expérimentales, numériques et théoriques on été effectuées afin de comprendre la dynamique de la cavité. Le régime FM obtenu à Laide de la modulation d'amplitude a permis de développer une nouvelle technique de mesure du paramètre d'élargissement de raie ("linewidth enhancement factor"). La comparaison avec une méthode connue a permis de distinguer les contributions de différents mécanismes au couplage phase-amplitude dans les amplificateurs à semi-conducteurs.

Elle nécessite une source laser cohérente accordable linéairement. Notre travail consiste à étudier la possibilité d’accorder linéairement les lasers à semiconducteur, en exploitant le chirp induit par la modulation directe en dents de scie et/ou en triangle. Nous avons caractérisé théoriquement et en simulation, la linéarité et l’amplitude de la variation dans le temps du chirp. Les résultats des deux approches sont en bon accord. Comme application nous avons mesuré, en simulation, le temps de retard d'un interféromètre Mach-Zehnder, par C-OFDR en utilisant une source laser DFB sous modulation directe en dents de scie et en triangle. Nous avons calculé théoriquement la densité de puissance du signal de battement C-OFDR en tenant compte des termes de bruits, dans le cas des lasers BH et DFB, déduits de la résolution des équations d'évolution du laser.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
