Book excerpt: La turbulence d'onde cherche à apporter une description statistique des interactions d'un ensemble d'ondes faiblement non-linéaires. Initiée dans les années 1960 par les travaux de Zakharov et de Hasselmann, cette théorie est régulièrement mise en défaut par les observations expérimentales, en particulier dans le régime d'ondes de gravité ainsi qu'aux abords de la transition gravito-capillaire. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier expérimentalement ces deux régimes en analysant directement les interactions résonantes qui sont le cœur de la théorie de la turbulence faible. Une première expérience concerne le régime gravito-capillaire. Une cascade d'énergie constituée d'ondes faiblement linéaires est observée en accord avec la phénoménologie de la turbulence faible. L'utilisation d'outils statistiques d'ordre supérieur a permis de montrer que ce sont des interactions à 3-ondes essentiellement colinéaires qui gouvernent la cascade. La seconde expérience explore le régime gravitaire dans la plateforme de Coriolis. Le spectre de puissance montre la présence systématique d'une branche harmonique qui reste faible devant la composante linéaire. Les corrélations indiquent la présence d'interactions à 3-ondes entre la branche linéaire et la branche harmonique. Aucune interaction à 4-ondes comme le prévoit la théorie n'est observée. La dernière partie rapporte les résultats d'une expérience sur des ondes internes ainsi qu'une campagne de mesure in-situ de la mer Noire dont les données ont été mises à disposition par F. Ardhuin. Ces deux expériences confirment les résultats de la partie précédente et soulèvent la question de l'importance des interactions à 3-ondes avec la branche harmonique pour la génération de la cascade en régime de gravité...

Book excerpt: Les spectres expérimentaux des ondes de flexion dans les plaques élastiques minces diffèrent du spectre de Zakharov, prédit par la théorie de la turbulence d'ondes. La validité et le rôle des deux hypothèses de la turbulence d'ondes -- la séparation d'échelles temporelles et l'existence d'une fenêtre de transparence -- ont été étudiées. La caractérisation de l'amortissement des ondes dans notre système a révélé l'absence d'une fenêtre de transparence. Incorporé à une simulation numérique des équations dynamiques d'une plaque mince, cet amortissement permet de reproduire les spectres expérimentaux, plus raides que le spectre de Zakharov, validant ainsi la pertinence de la description de l'expérience à l'aide de ces équations. La solution de Zakharov est cependant retrouvée lorsque nous annulons la dissipation aux échelles intermédiaires. L'existence d'une fenêtre de transparence apparaît donc comme une condition nécessaire à l'observation des prédictions de la turbulence d'ondes. Enfin, l'hypothèse de la séparation d'échelle temporelle a été validée par une mesure du temps non linéaire associé aux échanges d'énergie entre ondes, utilisant une analyse en paquets d'ondes du mouvement. Cependant, pour les très forts forçages expérimentaux, ce temps non linéaire devient de l'ordre de la période des ondes aux grandes échelles, pour lesquelles le spectre change de forme. Ces observations ont été prolongées grâce aux simulations numériques, qui ont permis d'observer l'apparition d'un régime fortement non linéaire dans lequel prédominent aux grandes échelles les d-cones et les plis.

Experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume with a cross section consisting of a wide floodplain adjacent to a main channel. The embankment length, discharge, sediment size, and abutment shape were varied, and the resulting equilibrium scour depths were measured. Water-surface profiles, velocities, and scour-hole contours were also measured. In the report, a methodology is developed for estimating abutment scour that takes into account the redistribution of discharge in the bridge contraction, abutment shape, sediment size, and tailwater depth. The independant variables in the proposed scour formula are evaluated at the approach-channel cross section and can be obtained froma one-dimensional water-surface profile computer program such as the Water-Surface Profile Program (WSPRO). The proposed scour evaluation procedure is outlined and illustrated, including consideration of the time required to reach equilibrium scour. The proposed methodology is applied to two cases of measured scour in the field.
