Book excerpt: Dans une première partie, nous étudions successivement l'effet de H, N, C sur une même famille d'alliages: les composés R2Fe17. Nous montrons que les modifications structurales induites par la présence d'éléments interstitiels sont à l'origine de modifications spectaculaires des propriétés magnétiques (aimantation, température de Curie, anisotropie magnétique...). Ainsi, l'insertion d'atomes interstitiels dans le réseau R2Fe17 provoque une nette augmentation des interactions d'échange entre électrons 3d et un renforcement de l'aimantation macroscopique. Contrairement à l'hydrogène, le carbone et l'azote ont un effet bénéfique sur l'anisotropie magnétique et les composés Sm2Fe17N3 et Sm2Fe17Cx sont susceptibles d'applications comme aimants permanents. L'étude par spectroscopie d'absorption X (XANES) montre que la présence d'éléments interstitiels dans Ce2Fe17 provoque une relocalisation des orbitales 4f du cérium. Les mesures du dichroïsme circulaire magnétique des rayons X (MCXD) révèlent l'existence d'un moment magnétique 5d ordonné sur le cérium. L'insertion d'éléments légers dans le réseau R2Fe17 conduit à une redistribution des électrons 3d avec évolution vers un état ferromagnétique fort. Dans une seconde partie, nous étudions l'effet des interstitiels sur d'autres structures cristallines: Nd2Fe14B, ThFe11Cx et R(FeM)12. Dans ces structures comme dans les composés R2Fe17 l'aimantation et la température de Curie sont très sensibles à la présence d'interstitiels. Il ressort que l'effet des éléments interstitiels sur l'anisotropie magnétocristalline est étroitement lié à la localisation de ces atomes dans l'environnement de l'atome R. Les études précédentes ont révélé l'extrême sensibilité du magnétisme du fer à son environnement local. Nous montrons que la hiérarchie des moments magnétiques portés par les atomes de fer peut être établie semi-quantitativement dans de nombreux composés, à partir de l'analyse de l'environnement cristallographique du fer.

Les phases RCo5-xMx (M = Al, Ga et Si) conservent la structure CaCu5, tandis que la série Rn+1Co3n+5B2n présente des surstructures variées. Une occupation préférentielle des atomes Al, Ga, Si pour le site 3g de la structure CaCu5 a été démontrée par diffraction neutronique. La substitution du Fe au Co dans les composés PrCo4Al et PrCo4Ga s'effectue préférentiellement dans le site 3g de la structure. La présence d'éléments M dans RCo5-xMx modifie sensiblement les diagrammes de phase magnétiques. Les mesures de spectroscopie d'absorption X réalisées pour les composés CeCo5-xMx et Cen+1Co3n+5B2n ont établit que le cérium est dans un état de valence intermédiaire. L'insertion de l'hydrogène dans Y2Co7 conduit à une distorsion orthorhombique pour Y2Co7H6 et provoque une transition métamagnétique.

During this period it has been actively developed and the range of problems tackled greatly extended. Originally it was used for studies of transient species involv ing vibrational, electronic and ESR spectroscopy. Nowadays the study of transient species forms a comparatively small part of HI work since it has been amply demonstrated that very fruitful information can be obtained of the structure and interactions of stable molecules and their aggregates. In addition to the s~ectroscopic methods mentioned above the MI technique is nowadays a standard method in research based on vibrational relaxation, luminescence, Mossbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, pulsed NMR and photoelectron spectroscopy. The matrix isolation technique affords considerable advantages over more conventional methods in most applications of spectroscopy. Areas where the technique has been widely applied, or shows great potential, include: metal atom chemistry, and its relation to surface chemistry, high temperature inorganic species, transition metal complexes, interstellar species, free radicals and unstable molecules, conformational studies, molecular com plexes, and intermolecular forces.
